The fried duck was really good. I'm Chinese, come from Vancouver Canada and I haven't found duck this good. We have a *crap ton* of Chinese food in my city - I grew up in a suburb where the majority is Chinese, not Caucasian. If they had fried duck this good in Vancouver I'd definitely revisit. We also had the twice fried pork belly with veg - pretty decent stuff, tastes like I'd expect it to. I'd skip the beef hot plate (came in a foil) - tasteless and not very good. We just ordered these 3 - definitely recommend the fried duck. My parents were very happy to be able to have decent Chinese food in Europe - they were getting homesick and can't go for too long without rice. Better than the duck in London Chinatown by far (different styles though). The decor was really in your face ethnic though. Not a fan. Overall, all the dishes were delicious and not too spicy. The fish dish was probably the best since it was so fresh and flaky. The place is pretty tight with lots of tables right next to each other but we were still able to fit our stroller next to our table. We sampled three Chinese restaurants in the area China Sichuan stands different because of its Northern China dishes (others are Cantonese restaurants). Dishes are generous (big plates!) typically with lots of chliles. The chilies are not hot with almost zero numbing chilies. Food is not genuinely Sichuan however it's still good food with speedy service. We came on a Thursday night. The restaurant was completely full by 7pm. No seriously, this is what is written below the "Chicken Dishes" part of the menu along with other random passages sprinkled throughout the menu. Thanks to a tip from another fellow Yelper, my hound nose was pointed in the direction of this Sichuan establishment on the tattoo/coffee shop/junk food/assless-underwear lined street known as the (in)famous Warmoesstraat. I have to admit that I was excited to try this place because to my knowledge, it's the only Sichuan place in Amsterdam! So anyone looking to try something different than the typical Chinese food (Cantonese) you'll find in the city, needs to Si-check this place out!! Naturally I had to come with a fellow Asian in order to have another pair of slanted eyes and anime mouth, and we were both looking forward to burn-my-face-off spicy food that Sichuan is so famous for. We ordered Steamed Beef, Royal Fish, Mountain Sliced Beef (described as village food), and Yellow River Chicken. Steamed Beef - Interesting! Not sure what the flavors were and it was yummy, but if you order this too, you will open the wood steamer and think... hmmm... interesting! Royal Fish - Fried fish in an interesting sauce. Again, I say interesting because I liked it, but I can't quite describe the flavor! Mountain Sliced Beef - Average and had no spice... I mean, King Dennis is more used to royal food and not food of the common peasants! Yellow River Chicken - ok...... this, I was NOT pleased with. We asked for the spiciest thing on the menu, and we were told THIS dish. In addition, the strange chef comments from the menu say the following: "madly hot, madly enjoyable, madly attractive, for those who don't like spice, don't have a life!" Ok, you have to kind of giggle at the last part... Out of 10 chili peppers, I would give this 0. Like.... 0.00000. What the fukumi-fukuyu happened?!?! There were dried red and green chilies and Sichuan peppers sprinkled all over the chicken and in order to get some spice out of it, I had to shove these peppers in my mouth with the chicken and only THEN was it semi-kind-of-but-not-kind-of spicy. So why four stars?? HUGE menu with very interesting items Legit Sichuan (I've been to this region of China a couple of times and definitely fits the bill) NOT Cantonese food (Cantonese is great, but it dominates the world of Chinese food overshadowing others!) Most dishes are cooked with chilis, but more importantly, they use the Sichuan pepper! Don't know what that is? Come check it out here!!! Despite the non-spiciness, I really enjoyed the flavors of all our dishes! I will be back because I want to try many other things on the menu, however I want to warn you readers one more time; don't come here expecting spicy food! Signs that this restaurant is authentic: - full of Chinese people (specifically Northern Chinese people, yes... there is a difference) - the waitress tried to persuade a group of Dutch people not to order certain dishes because they wouldn't be able to handle the spice -they give you chopsticks by default This restaurant brought back a ton of nostalgic memories of studying in China. The food was delicious and spicy dishes were actually spicy. TIP: I am a weakling when it comes to spicy food but Sichuan is well-known for their peppers so order 1 dish (with 1 pepper rating) and the rest not-spicy to even out the heat. Food: 4/5 Recommendations: Any of the sizzling hot plates Sichuan dishes are the highlight of this restaurant, but they also do the other dishes surprisingly well Palace Eggplant - classic Sichuan dish Service: 3/5 Service is typical Chinese, fast and efficient. Who would have thought this would be a winner? It's smack dab in the center of the red lights, featuring seriously red, red-walls and lanterns. The eggplant, duck and spicy pork dumplings are the bomb. I went to this restaurant on the recommendation of a friend of mine who knows the person who recruits the chefs here. They are directly recruited from Sichuan so they really know their food. We had fish one dumplings to start, and then we had Sichuan chicken and Sichuan pork. I can't remember the name of the dishes! However, the food was excellent. Spicy but not mind blowingly spicy so the food flavours could show through. Would recommend this wholeheartedly, and look forward to trying more dishes in future visits. read more

Fire Fish, Sichuan Dumplings, Emperors Eggplant and Pork with Spicy Beans ... all of these should be placed on the top chinese dishes in Amsterdam list. Do I have your attention yet? I was extremely disappointed with the Peking duck, but this is a Sichuan restaurant after all and if not for my guest at the table, I would have never ordered that fried disaster of a dish. Another point of contention was that there is no draft Heineken, but the king size Heinekens in a can somewhat made up for it, but not really. The service is good, but the food is better. Definitely make this a stop on your chinese food tour of Amsterdam or even call in for some take-out. You will not be disappointed. read more

Continuing my quest for Szechuan food, I had to try this place out while visiting Amsterdam. The city is not big - you can walk pretty much anywhere, including Chinatown (where China Si Chiuan Kitchen is located). Most of the chinese food in Amsterdam is Cantonese, as expected with most chinatowns in the world. For those who aren't aware, this means mainly seafood or pork, and items like wontons or some dumplings. Cantonese food is great, but very different from Szechuan (i.e., spicy!) chinese food - so, if you want Szechuan food, try to avoid a mainly cantonese restaurant. Anyway, I digress... The food at Si Chuan Kitchen is good! We ordered our usual spicy fish (here it's called "Fire fish" or something like that). This consists mainly of boiled fish filets (no bones) in an oily, super-spicy, soupy sauce with cabbage, onions, and in this case, mushrooms. A nice rendition here. Very good and very spicy. We also ordered the szechuan eggplant. Also very good. Not too spicy really, which is a break from the usual szechuan eggplant dish, but still tasty. Portions are big! Note: in Amsterdam (and most of Europe, I've found), you get slightly nickel-and-dimed in chinese restaurants because you have to order rice and tea separately and per person. As an Asian, this seems a little chintzy since all chinese food should include these two items by default. Otherwise, service is friendly enough. English is poor but passable here (a good sign for chinese restaurants, though). The menu has ridiculously funny descriptions, but can be used easily for ordering by English speakers. A little slow in terms of getting the check, but this seems to be the norm in Europe. Price is decent (though this depends on your Euro conversion rate!) Decor acceptable. Would recommend! read more

What a gem! Really did not expect to find something so authentic and truly fantastic. This is seriously good SiChuan food. Better than anything I've had in NYC or California or Canada or London! Yes, have had better in China, but only just! This place is THAT good. The balance of salty, spicy and sweet is perfect. And you get the right amount of spicy numbness that really authentic SiChuan food should have. And if you speak Mandarin, the experience is even more amazing. The staff is great. read more

Overall China Sichuan has a enjoyable atmosphere, it was a nice stop after wondering around in Amsterdam looking for some Chinese food. The menu is big a lot to choose from. After looking the menu over I ordered the Sweet and Sour Duck, it was rich and delicious and very filling. The flower tea was decent, wanted more flavor from it. Heads up! You may see a black cat wondering in the restaurant when you go, and will come over to you if you meow. However, please think twice about petting said cat, well at least not looking away if you do pet it... Or the cat may bite you on your hand as that is what happened to me. It's cozy and warm in here, with a big Buddha clothed for modesty looking down at you. The food is quite good, and spicy enough to satisfy me without burning my Dutch boyfriend's taste buds off. We ordered the sizzling spicy beef, which came out quite sizzling and was quite spicy, and the peking duck, which was crispy and pleasant, but didn't come with all the accessories I'm used to in the US, i.e. plum sauce, little pancake things, green onions, etc. Even without all the extra trappings it was good, since the meat was flavorful and not greasy at all. We also ordered two different kinds of dumplings which were tasty, and the hostess was gracious enough to bring me a menu with photos on it when I was trying to ask if they had 'those fluffy dumpling things with red bean in them'. It turns out I was thinking of Red Bean Paste Buns, which they don't have, but she was patient enough to wait for me to remember what they were called before I realized what I was thinking of wasn't actually a dumpling at all, and felt a little silly. The only downside to this place is that their toilet has a sign on it asking you to throw your toilet paper in the garbage bin, which squicked me out because I'm a wuss American. This is probably because their plumbing is not so good, but still. People who are not so poo averse, or don't have to use the toilet may not mind this at all. That being said, their toilets were clean, and there was hot water and soap and towels, so it's a pretty great bathroom by China standards. read more

First of all, price is quite steep for the portion given. 6.5 euro for 5 flat/meatless dumplings, and 10.95 euro for a HALF-filled bowl of noodle are crazy! even restaurants in Paris are more generous than that. we ordered "2 cups of water" and the dude server brought us two tiny bottles, which later turned out to be 3 euros each. well, I am OK with paying for things that I expect to pay for, but this made me feel robbed. So, unless you are ok with paying 3 euro for a bottle of water, make sure to ask for FREE TAP WATER when you order with the server. i was also told people "should" order drinks with their meals in europe, and that every restaurant in europe charge for water. I googled, none of the statements is true. if I'm paying at the end of the meal, I get to decide what I drink. read more

I would give Sichuan Kitchen 3.5 stars. I think it's hard to find a good authentic Chinese place in Amsterdam, and this one fits the bill if you are really craving some Chinese flavors that are not adjusted to fit a Dutch palate. However, for a Sichuan place, I need me some more spice!! We ordered the spicy fish in hot pepper oil, some bok choi, and lamb with onion. I would recommend all of them, though all were on the oily side. The fish was very tender, but it needed to be MUCH more spicy. All the dishes were well salted, and each had their own distinct flavor. I hate it when I go to a Chinese place and every dish is in the same "brown sauce." The portions are a bit small, but we ordered the perfect amount for 2 people. read more

What a grand thing to see so many vegetarian options. My favorite, go to dish, is the mapo tofu. Just the right amount of by with the creaminess of the tofu. A Nother good one is the Chinese broccoli. Also in a very nice sauce with spicy peppers. I originally found this place through a recommendation of a Chinese girl I work with. She raved about it I wanted to give it a try. Since then it has been around five trips now.The one last night was with for colleagues of mine. Each of them ordered something out and they all loved the food. The crispy duck in particular look pretty good. The restaurant seems to be in a very touristy area, but don't let that sit for you from the experience. The staff have always been really friendly and the interior is designed sort of fun. This place was a treat and a surprise. My wife and I make a habit out of trying Chinese food in different cities around the world (Lisbon: okay, Verona: terrible) and this was the best since Sydney, including our regular Sichuan place in DC and a phenomenal Sichuan restaurant in Philadelphia's Chinatown. A spicy lamb dish was suffused with Sichuan pepper and the dandan noodles were great. Dishes cooked in oil were't oil logged which was a bonus. The "one pepper" dishes (e.g. dandan noodles) were a little less hot than I'd expect but still flavorful. (And in Europe if you want tap water you need to explicitly order tap water. But just order the tea if you're here, the pot is one price no matter how much you whine.) read more

We stopped by last night for 2 bowls of soup because it was so cold. Ordered the Laksa noodle soup and the spicy beef noodle soup. The Laksa had absolutely no coconut flavor, no spicy just thin spaghetti noodle with flavorless broth and slices of beef which were the only edible items. I had the spicy noodle soup which was spiced water broth spiced with red oil and thin spaghetti noodles with lots of beef. The beef was good but overall 2 big misses. The other food around that people were ordering look good but as far as making broth for noodle soup; avoid ordering it you will be totally disappointed. I know my soups and this was horrible both of us left 3/4 bowls full when we exited.. 25 Euro definitely not worth it. read more

There's no Chinatown in Amsterdam, but there are a couple of truly authentic, well-maintained Chinese restaurants in the red light district. Sichuan is one of them. The decor is colorful while not ostentatious, the servers are polite and always checking on you, and the food is truly delicious. I came here twice during a cold Amsterdam winter and filled my belly with tasty, spicy Sichuan food. Lots of vegetarian options as well. This did not live up to the reviews at all. I went here after reading reviews and thought I would have a great Chinese meal. Service was extremely poor. I ordered and waited almost one hour. First ordered dumplings and king pao chicken. Easy right? Well they served the main dish without the rice. Said to wait 3-5 min. I asked to keep the dish hot. When I received the main course I was still waiting for the dumplings. Mean while , people around were getting served. The king pao was the worst ever. Tasted like vinegar and no spice at all.
