My husband and I ordered take out this evening and ordered kung pao beef and garlic shrimp with broccoli. My husband's dinner, the kung pao beef tasted like they poured a ton of hot sauce in it and his hot and sour soup was equally over the top spicy. My dish the garlic shrimp was also quite spicy. They never asked how spicy we want it. It was the worst Chinese food ever and won't go back. We had to throw our dinner down the sink. Interior is small and simple, you order at the counter, but people were very friendly and place was clean. My son had sesame chicken with fried rice and egg roll... he almost licked his plate (: I had beef Pho...wish they had seafood but it was delicious!! Total bill with large waters...13.00! I ordered a takeout combo here last week and didn't really enjoy it. The fried rice that came with the combo seemed like white rice with some soy and egg. There were no vegetables with the meal. The egg roll did have ground meat in it which was nice as at most places they are comprised of cabbage. It was inexpensive, I believe my meal with tax was $8. I am quite satisfied with my food eachtime i eat here. The thing is i usually only get dishes with shrimp in them for my own personal preference. None the less they are always good. The people working always seem annoyed when you call to order for pickup. Not only that but their "hours" are not true. They almost always close early. With no warning. Every day. YES YES YES. OH GOD YES. The Vietnamese food at the place is just superb. Their pho comes in a large bowl, with plenty of condiments, and its made just right. Their bun bo hue is simply perfect. Their bahn mi is great! I cannot say enough good things about their Vietnamese menu. I haven't tried their Chinese food, but it looks like a fairly standard array of Americanized Chinese food... but don't get any of that. Order the pho and be happy. Columbia is a funny place sometimes. Despite now having a few Vietnamese places, the best one, by far, is a rundown little place on an overlooked part of Broadway and has a name that doesn't even emphasize their biggest strength. Through a friends recommendation, I first tried Chinese Wok Express about 2 years ago, and I've been coming loyally ever since. Don't even bother with the Chinese part of the menu, its overly Americanized and not all that interesting. Instead, go for the Vietnamese menu. You can pretty much order anything on that menu without going wrong. My personal favorite is the spring rolls & beef/meatball combination pho. Despite living in Falls Church Virginia, which is the mecca of Vietnamese restaurants, this place still impresses me. The pho is always fresh, the Bánh mì is always good, and the combination dishes they have are also impressive. Don't bother with Saigon Bistro or getting mediocre Chinese food in CoMo. This is the place to go. Oh, and by the way, most places, pho & spring rolls will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 12-14 bucks, but here, you can get out for under 10 bucks. Chinese Wok Express has been dishing up really delicious Hunan, Szechuan, Cantonese and Vietnamese food since my undergrad days. They pretty much have the entire market on Vietnamese food in Columbia, and it's pretty damn tasty (thus I haven't explored much on their Chinese menu). I cannot get enough of their Pho Tai, rice noodles with medium rare beef in an aromatic star anise flavored beef broth, garnished/flavored with scallions, white onion slices, cilantro, basil, chili sauce and hoisin. The restaurant certainly doesn't offer up much in terms of ambiance...maybe that's why their food is so inexpensive. (We're talking take out counter and a small box of an undecorated room). Regardless, they're never empty, the food is delicious, staff is friendly...I really can't think of any complaints. *Note that they're cash only! read more

Huge fan of this place, I eat lunch here at least once a week. The food is a little bit of a mine-field between *great* and ok. All you really need to know though is that their fresh spring rolls are awesome and that their Pho tastes almost as good as what you'd pick up in Ho Chi Minh City, which is saying a lot. The BBQ pork with noodles is good as well, but not on par with the original Bún Thit Nuong in the same way the Pho is. The decor is very simple, service is basic but super friendly. This place is really a hole in the wall, but don't let that deter you! I'm a graduate from the culinary institute of America and I've been coming here for Pho for over 10 years. I've traveled around a lot and lived in New York and Texas, and no place comes close to touching their pho. Unbelievably good!! I haven't tried much from here, but every time I contemplate trying something new, it seems just too big of a shame to get anything else!! If you're going to order anything, get the pho! It's unbelievable!! The broth beautiful; clear, extremely flavorful and fragrant. It come out piping hot along with a generous plateful of bean sprouts, a lime wedge, jalapeño slices and Thai basil. The amount of noodles they use is perfect--also a generous helping but not so much you feel like you're eating pasta. (It's one of my pet peeves when I get soup with noodles and by the time I've eaten all the noodles there's no broth left.) By the time you're finished with the noodles, there's still a full bowl of broth! I'd eat here every day if my waistband would let me!! read more

Best Chinese food in town! This is soul Chinese food. They give super generous portions of everything. Best and only deep fried cashew chicken worth eating in town. No checks but they take cash and debit/credit cards. It isn't much to look at inside it is kind of a dive but it is very clean and like I said before the food is the best in town. Once you have something that you like from this restaurant good luck at being satisfied with anything else from now on. I have ordered from almost every Chinese place in town because they don't deliver but now I have found that there is a Columbia service called Mr Delivery and day have Chinese Wok Express on their service and they actually do deliver their food and it is always still piping hot. read more

Awesome, awesome, awesome!! I moved to the middle of the state (not a cosmopolitan area AT ALL) and I thought all sense of adventurous eating was gone. I used to love frequenting Indian, Thai, Vietnamese restaurants that seemed like they would be featured in a foodie magazine or TV show... and I really couldn't find that in the area. Until now!
