I was very surprised by the comfort and cleanliness of the cabins and RV park. And would recommend to anyone who likes this type of accommodation. Been coming to the Chinook for over 15 years and have never had a bad experience. the cabins have always been clean and cozy very well maintained place to come enjoy anytime of year. We always come out in the summer with our RV and stay a couple weeks a year, Keith and his wife Cheryl are always very accommodating. They check in with us regularly to make sure we don't need anything while we are staying in the RV. We just spent a few nighta in the Americona while on spring break snow skiing. very cute well maintained cabin. I recommend this place over any other place in south fork. read more

We spent the weekend as a family reunion and rented five cabins and two RV sites and booked them in January 2025. We've met as a family for several years and were looking for a place to come back to in the future. While the RV sites seemed fine, the historic log cabins were the 'coziest' we've ever been to. I don't know how the other cabins were but the Fort Wilderness cabin is NOT for people over 5 ft 9 in! We have NEVER felt more claustrophobic in a 'rustic historic log cabin' than in the one we rented. After measuring the four doors, two were about 5 ft 9 inches clear. One was about 5 ft 10 in. Only one was 6 ft 0 in. The shower was 6 ft. 5 in and 31 in x 32 in. A lovely antler chandelier in the main bedroom had the points sticking down and out all sides and we ended up putting clothing on the fixture to avoid being poked in the eyes. We had notified the owner that we weren't sure if we needed the last day for all 4 people. Turned out the last night would have been for only two people. We asked for a refund and owner refused claiming she doesn't offer any refunds after a card is run. The surprises continued when we were charged a 'non cash fee' for the deposit. The owner said that it was actually a credit card fee. We were charged an additional credit card fee for the balance. We were not notified that we would be a credit card fee. Apparently it was hidden in the fine print somewhere on the website. After asking for a refund for the surprise charges, the owner again refused. I understand that operating expenses add up, but why nickel and dime customers with surprise charges? Perhaps the owners have so much demand that they don't care if people return or not? Regarding the low clearances, we were NOT informed ahead of time, despite a detailed description of each cabin. The first time we heard there may be a head clearance issue was after we checked in and signed the receipt. Another 'Gotcha'. It seems that the owner doesn't want people to know about the low clearances. We felt that we were trapped into the charges and were stuck banging our heads on the doors and light fixtures. To the owner's credit, every door had a sign indicating that caution for the low clearance issue. (Too little, too late) When I suggested that the owner notify potential guests of the low clearances ahead of time on the website, the owner was defensive and had plenty of excuses, including "people back then weren't as tall as they are now", and even accusing my son of being 'an anomaly' because he is 6 ft 7 in. Even the ceilings in the second bedroom, bathroom and kitchen/dining were barely high enough to clear and the light fixture in the bedroom and kitchen was also a head-bumping hazard, as were the rods to hang clothes in the second bedroom. Too bad the owner didn't want to work with us. Had we felt like we had been treated fairly and honestly, we might have considered returning another year. On the plus side, the property did offer a large, shady pavilion for our family to gather for meals and social time. Sadly, we will continue our search for a venue for our annual family reunions as this is not going to be where we plan future reunions. read more

This is a great RV campground with cute cabins. The RV sites are large with plenty of room to easily back a large trailer into. The cabins are historic ones from the early 1900s but updated for modern comfort. I have been coming to this campground for several years and plan to for several years in the future. Great owners. My husband and I stayed at Chinook last month and were very pleasantly surprised. We wanted a convenient, inexpensive option for an overnight with our pup, and Chinook was the perfect spot. For the price, I was thrilled--everything was quite clean (the bathroom facility was fabulous) and functioning. The owners and employees were incredibly welcoming and offered to help in any way possible. Our rustic cabin was just that: rustic. But it was well-kept and I only saw dust/dirt in one or two areas. Otherwise, it was completely clean and safe. There was a fan we used overnight as well as a radiator unit for winter visitors. The character of the place was very fun, and we slept really well (no overnight noise from others or the road). Thanks for the great stay! read more

Great place to stay, ample parking , friendly owners and pet friendly. I stay here every year for off roading and they don't mind trail rigs and big trailers. They do an amazing cookout for 4th of July and the owner even did some burnouts in his truck to celebrate. Would recommend for people that like a quiet place to stay that is easy going and fun. Look for the burnout marks on the road and the sweet smell of amazing cooking. read more

When you're in the mountains isn't it a requirement to stay in a cabin? In all seriousness, I don't like to really rough it and I am always a little nervous when my boyfriend says, "Hey! I booked a cabin in South Fork." Where in the h*ll is South Fork? I would reiterate what a lot of the other reviews say, the owners are very nice and even though you can tell the buildings are dated, they make sure they are very clean units and ours was decorated super cute; Route 66. We did ride motorcycles and had a great place to park right next to it and because the weather didn't warm up until around 11am when we were there they gave us an hour later check out to ensure we wouldn't have to ride our motorcycles on potentially frosty roads. We arrived in town after 8pm so literally everything was closed but when the next day arrived and you could see everything...what a cute little town. We will definitely be back! read more

Great place to stay in South Fork, for my review below we stayed in the Santa Cabin. Pros -Great location - minutes from hiking, Wolf Creek, and basically anything you'd like outdoors -reasonably priced for what you are getting and the location it is in -extremely friendly owners with great communication before and during your stay -mini kitchen (no sink) including fridge and microwave and little kitchen area -Most cabins (besides Santa) are dog friendly but always good to double check before your stay -Cabin has little grill, fireplace -During summer months there are plenty of r/v and camping spots in addition to the cabins Cons -In the end it's a historic cabin that has been updated throughout the years so don't expect a 4 star lodging. -To he point above no A/C for summer stays Overall it was a great place to stay with extremely friendly owners. We will 100% be back for future trips and looking forward to it! read more

Highly recommend Chinook's cabins for a rustic stay. The cabins are stocked with everything you need and are very clean. Warm and pretty comfortable. The owners take great pride in their property and are super nice! We'd definitely stay here again. Took one star off for broken toaster and more importantly, the bed...yes, it's a rustic cabin, but a comfortable bed is still important. These beds are past their prime and so are some of the pillows. Bring in some fresh new beds and this place would get five stars for sure! Great grounds too. read more

Went to Creede and surrounding areas for weekend trip and checked into the Chinook cabins. We stayed in Grandmas Cottage. Very cute and cozy. The folks there were very nice and have lots of pride in their place and it shows. The cabin was neat and clean stocked with everything you need for a stay. The old timey sink was the best !! Would give it 5 stars but the heater was so noisy, clinking and clanking Great place. read more

Owners Rich and Debbie were great. They accidentally double-booked us in another cabin on the 4th of July weekend (unfortunately, we were the latter booking), and cut us a great deal for a single night in the Victorian Rose cabin. Plus, they called around to help find us a place to stay on our second night. The cabin we stayed in is over 100 years old, but in great shape. Very fun place to stay. And, we had lunch the next day at the smokehouse barbecue, which Rich and Debbie both run on the property. It was great!! Oh, and they're pet-friendly, so we were able to have our dog with us, too. Not covid or pandemic safe. Booked a private cabin for two nights. Office staff was not wearing masks. No attempt by office staff to make transaction contactless. On the eve of the second night we heard people in the back of our cabin. As it turns out there is another "cabin" in our cabin that they rented out. During the night someone in that party was clearly sick coughing and throwing up. We rented this cabin with the expectation that we'd have our own cabin. The Chinook Lodge and Smokehouse is an interesting combination. There are many small cabins which have been updated and redecorated in different themes and there are large RV spaces as well. Rich and Debbie run the place and are doing a beautiful job making the space comfy and friendly. We arrived a little early and were able to check in. The nearest restaurant is not really far, maybe a half mile but we were wiped out from our ride. The smokehouse had just closed (at 2pm) so Debbie cheerfully made us a couple of brisket sandwiches for our dinner, packing the bread and extras separately so the bread wouldn't get soggy. Our cabin, also the Victorian Rose in the other review, had a screen porch, a small kitchen with dining table, sink, microwave, fridge (very cleverly tucked under the counter), stove, and oven. The 'living room' has a fireplace, queen sized bed, and a bunk bed. Then to the side of this room is the 'master' bedroom with a queen and off that is a small bathroom. The bathroom, particularly the toilet, is a bit tight, although perfectly adequate. The master bed was quite comfy and we fell asleep to the sound of crickets outside. The owner let us tour a cabin before we made our decision to stay. She then gave a great dinner recommendation and helped us get familiar with this area. The owners are very friendly and caring. I have been staying at this location for 10 plus years and they have changed owners over the years but the quality of work has got better over the years. Highly recommend this place. The rates are cheaper than the motel that is in town and you are by your self with no neighbors slamming doors like a typical motel room. I have stayed at Southwest, Fisherman, and Route 66 and all 3 I would stay at again. Now, I will say Southwest is a wee bit small even for one person. The shower is kinda like parking a 4 door long bed in a Prius spot. I'll probably upgrade to the bigger ones in the future but I'll still stay at the Southwest again no hesitation. I was wanting to stay a few nights to ring in the new year.... The husband and wife running this establishment wanted to charge me a pet fee even though I told them I had a service dog. Then they said they wouldn't charge me if I could prove to them my dog was a real service animal. They even were so ignorant as to state that their dog was a "certified" service animal. Fact is, there is no central certifying organization that handles that and ANY certification you get hold no federal authority and is, indeed, just a piece of paper. Below are direct quotes from the ADA. I have attached the web link to the ADA FAQs sheet to help clear up any confusion, as well. Hopefully this company will change their way of doing business. Q11. Can hotels assign designated rooms for guests with service animals, out of consideration for other guests? A. No. A guest with a disability who uses a service animal must be provided the same opportunity to reserve any available room at the hotel as other guests without disabilities. They may not be restricted to "pet-friendly" rooms. Q12. Can hotels charge a cleaning fee for guests who have service animals? No. Hotels are not permitted to charge guests for cleaning the hair or dander shed by a service animal. Wow! what more can we say... This place is neat and very clean. My wife and I booked a few nights at Chinook (early December) after checking some reviews. We decided on staying here and sure glad we did. The new owners Keith and Cheryl Johnson greeted us at the door and after chatting a bit about their new place, Keith took and showed us a few of the cabins and we decided to stay in the Americana and oh yah, all the cabins are themed cabins, this was so cool... Our cabin was very clean,(all the cabins we looked at were clean and tidy - Jus sayin). We had all the essentials for making dinner right there instead of going out. We had a kitchen with a fridge, stove, sink, dining table and microwave. There were 2 beds and a bathroom with a step down shower. We just loved the old fire place in the bedroom, was very cool and romantic. Lots of history this place has. We will be coming back in the summer to try out the big RV section, it was definitely cold in December but so beautiful. We found this place to be quite cozy and with all our friends going in different directions (from Moab) we're thinking we found us a new place to spend our summers. Finest hotel that I have ever stayed in. The further up the better, although the traffic noise didn't bother us. Sheets & towels are high quality.
