we love an all vegan restaurant. i was glad to find something in the area with so many vegan options. and once i saw they had a vegan banana pudding I was in. Unfortunately the food didn't hit as hard as I was expecting but it was still good. My mom ordered a salad which it looks like they pull from the premade section upfront. her carrots were moldy so we ended up splitting my dish. the girl working at the counter gave me a free dessert which was so kind of her. i got the soul bowl. fried artichokes, mac n cheese, collards, sweet potato, and coleslaw. The fried artichokes were good and a cool concept. The collards desperately needed some seasoning/salt but the slaw was realllllly good. the banana pudding was good but the whip cream was little too salty. at the end of the day I will always support an all vegan restaurant but I do not think chive would be my first choice in the future. Chive Kitchen was the first all-vegan restaurant I ever tried & even now, 7+ years & many other vegan restaurants later, it remains my favorite. I tried it when I myself was vegan, but even now as a non-vegan, I often find myself craving it. I first discovered Chive Kitchen at a VegMichigan event where Chive Kitchen's head chef & founder, Susie Silvestre, was doing a cooking demo of their chili. Surprisingly, my favorite dish at Chive Kitchen to this day is their Michigan chili. I've personally always hated chili and was very hesitant to try Chive Kitchen's, but the moment I did, I was transformed. Their chili is one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted & ever since then, I've tried to try other place's chilis as well & they all fall SO short. I highly recommend you try a cup of this the next time you dine at Chive Kitchen. It's so scrumptious & I even brought it with me on several camping trips to heat over the campfire on colder events, which really hit the spot. I don't understand how they do it, but the food is so incredible here! They take making food to a whole new level. I really want to encourage everyone, whether you are or aren't vegan, to leave any qualms & whatever prior (mis)conceptions you have about vegan food at the door, & try this place because you really shouldn't knock it until you've tried it. Chive Kitchen is always doing special events as well & incorporating new & tasty dishes into their menu on a rolling basis. It's a bummer when your favorites change. I was craving the sweet rice bowl (no picture this time) and hunny artichoke appetizer that I ordered two weeks ago. The sweet rice bowl - the rice was bland and the sweet potato portion was small. The hunny artichoke was a huge disappointment. They're normally quartered and have a nice crunch. The artichoke hearts were not quartered so when fried, the batter doesn't stay on and it's soggy. When I asked about it, I was told, "that's how they come now." Not vegan any more, extremely overpriced, and the food is mediocre at best. My girlfriend paid $11 for a measly portion of potato pancakes. My sweet rice bowl ($17.50) was okay, but there are SO many restaurants in this area with much better food--Seva, Aahar Indian, La Marsa (Middle Eastern), etc., whether you are vegan like I am or not. Oh, also, unless there is some very good reason why you can't stay open past 7 pm, it's absurd for a restaurant to close this early. The food is delicious and the dining room and bar are really cute. It's not full service and food is served in carryout containers, but the staff is warm and welcoming, the drinks are fresh and cold, and the vegan faire is delicious! They also have a great selection of mocktails and wine. You just walk in and sit where you'd like and then order from the bar. They give you a table number and you pay up front when you leave. We had the pineapple fried rice and the fried artichoke bowl - both were so flavorful and delicious. I also had the minestrone soup, and that was hot and freshly made as well. Everything tasted great and I love the location - I will be back frequently, and especially when I am in the mood for a sandwich - they have a huge menu of those. We visited Chive for brunch again after a little intermission. We don't live near Chive but it is so worth taking a drive for! Updating review to say that, as always, the food was amazing and the service was great. Nadia took excellent care of us and we walked away fully satisfied. I've been to Chive Kitchen twice, once for brunch and once for dinner. Both times I tried a few different items and everything was delicious. I must say, though, you definitely get more bang for your buck at brunch. Dinner prices seem to be a bit high (many dinner entrees for $15-$24), but at least you get a decent amount of food. After reading the owner's response to a recent 2 star review, I was so impressed that I knew this was the place to purchase the gift card. I emailed the owner to see if they could accommodate my request for a gift card and she responded quickly. She made arrangements for me and I was able to get the gift card and make my appointment on time. Everything here is vegan, which is great. Even their coffee. My friend and I each ordered a cappuccino which was made with almond milk. Wasn't quite a cappuccino, but it was a lot of espresso with a little frothy almond milk on top! We got quite a few things to share between the two of us: -Bruschetta - their take was toast with a chickpeas on it, arugula and some kind of sauce. It was pretty good - Summer Squash Scramble - all their scrambles are made with tofu and not eggs, so this was piled with squash, zucchini, asparagus, and then a side of toast and home fries - Mushroom Scramble - tofu, various types of mushrooms, zucchini and then side of home fries and toast - Citrus glaze French Toast breading pudding - a big hunk/slice of this stuff that looked like a very rich monkey bread. What a gem! I came to Chive for my birthday and I couldn't have been more pleased by my special experience at this restaurant. I came here for dinner with a friend who is not vegan; I think we both enjoyed the experienced. For dinner time they dim the light and light up candles, not sure if it's a recent change or they've always been doing this but I don't know since it's my first time here for dinner. The place was packed pretty quick as dinner time comes, and there were people need to wait to get a spot. Vegan review: I recently went to Chive for the first time and I was so impressed. The ambiance is very trendy and cute. There were fresh flowers in every table which I loved. Their service was so sweet. She gave us recommendations and answered all of our questions about menu items. When it comes to the food, I loved the potato croquettes. That will be something I get EVERY time I come. They were so dense and the dipping sauce was so creamy and wonderful. My meal was the Corned beef and cabbage and it looked and tasty so real I was blown away. My friends meal of the chicken was to die for, same with my sister breakfast sandwich and chili. Disclosure - I was invited here to write a blog post about them. My mom and I stopped in here today, it's close to downtown Farmington in a plaza with lots of parking. I met Suzy and Lisa, the owners/managers, and they were able to recommend some dishes for us. Neither my mom nor I are vegan or vegetarian, but I try to avoid dairy since it doesn't sit well with me, and she avoids red meat, so we were excited to try Chive Kitchen. We ordered the tostada and chili to start, I had read about how fantastic the tostada was on here. It's literally one large, gluten-free, crispy tortilla with veggies, salsa, and some cashew sour cream and avocado garlic cream, and it was very good. I'm not a chili person but I took a spoonful of my mom's and it was good. My mom got the burrito ($7), which was a daily special, and I got the tacos (also $7) as well as a cherry drink ($5) which was good. I was a little skeptical because I don't generally like tofu but both were tasty. I liked the citrus one a little better but the smoky tofu one was good too. I'd say they're actually on par with Imperial's tacos (Ferndale) which from me is high praise. For dessert, we had the maple pudding, which is more individual-sized but we were already pretty full, so it worked out to share it. It was DELICIOUS. I asked what was in it, and it includes some soy milk, a little Sugar in the Raw, and Michigan maple syrup, and they topped it with (caramelized?) almonds. Yum. My mom commented that the place had a very Ferndale vibe (everyone there was around my age, 20/30s) which was interesting but kind of true. We have been by this place many times and had tried and loved some of the food from Chive that was at a friends baby shower. We were looking for a place with an outdoor patio because it's beautiful out and this was a perfect spot. There was live music in Riley Park so we had that as well as amazing food. We are not vegan but oh my gosh... delicious. My husband had the Ruben and I had the bbq ranch bowl. I highly recommend both. The mocha float was also awesome and so was the blueberry lemon cheesecake. All of the food we saw being served looked equally as good. WOW! We got so many compliments on our food from our wedding day! Suzy and her team were great to work with. Her serving team and bartenders were wonderful! She worked with us to make a menu that our families and we would love! Despite her restaurant being Vegan she did prepare meat options for our wedding which we (and our families!) appreciated. Our menu was to die for... from the reuben toast point appetizers to the mushroom cap "steaks" we loved every component of the dinner! The next time I was in town we returned and I ordered the Reuben Sandwich and it was bread literally soaked in grease with some stuff in the middle. We've been back in town for a couple months and avoided Chives but decided to give them another try tonight. Big overpriced mistake. The chocolate beet cake is still good but our meals were unimpressive and left us very hungry. We're not coming back. I suggest Chives go try a Chicago Diner Reuben to learn how good a vegan sandwich can be...and they have a cookbook (The Chicago Diner Cookbook) so maybe they could buy it for inspiration. I'm not a vegan. Not even close... but..this is my favorite restaurant in downtown Farmington! I arrive hungry and leave nourished. I've frequented Chive Kitchen quite a bit, and I'm impressed with how they make vegetables taste so dang good. My ultimate favorite, and consistent go to is the hot chocolate with coco whip. A shiny penny for the sweetest taste of heaven. I've recommended to friends and without a trace of guilt, passed on the addiction. Staff has always been nice. There has been a new wave of servers since I started eating here, so the attentiveness depends on who you get. My goal is to try everything once. I visited last week for lunch with a friend. The restaurant is located in downtown Farmington off of Grand River Avenue in a big shopping area with "Fresh Thyme" in it, but next to a cheese store. On this Saturday, there was a busy farmers market in the nearby parking lot. Some vegan restaurants have menu items that emulate non-vegan restaurants such as meat or cheese, and some have novel plant-based foods. Chive has the fake meat and cheese items. We both got the chili, which was a little spicy but very good. My friend got the asparagus tofu scramble, home fries and toasted sour dough, which he really enjoyed. What kind of sick person gives less than five stars to this place, and what kind of sicker person doesn't lick their plate clean at Chive? (...more on that in a bit.) Seeing raving reviews for this place in a group on Facebook, and peeking at their menu, I knew I had to try it, despite it being a 40min drive. The menu for lunch is insane -- there are dozens of options. Because I was so indecisive, I just went with the first appetizer and entrée I saw... that being the spicy nachos and buffalo "chicken" burrito. Bruh, those nachos. See: picture. T h i c c chips that held up to all the toppings, and a bounty of deliciousness. The salsa on top was excellent, I only wish there was a bit more of it. I was disappointed just in the sense that the nachos were not spicy.. almost at all. The pickled jalapenos were super mild, and the hot sauce on top wasn't very hot. Regardless, stupid good nachos that no one would ever know or care were vegan. The buffalo "chicken" burrito was insane. The mix of bleu cheese and buffalo sauce in the burrito made for a strangely chipotle sauce kind of flavor that was incredible. The small, fried pieces of tofu were so crispy and chicken-y (presumably pressed and soaked in vegan chicken broth) that no one would guess it wasn't chicken. The nuggets have a look of that porous sponge chicken from high school cafeteria days, but it was tofu -- and it tasted better than that. For dessert my girlfriend and I got banana cake to-go ... no way in hell were we gonna have room for it. And, as someone who doesn't like desserts, vegan or not, it was [expletive]ing incredible. $10 for a single slice, but it's the size of two -- get it if you see it. Oh -- right. The thing I mentioned earlier. Two crazy people ordered nachos, a hot dog, and a burger. They ate maybe 10% of their food. They complained to a manager. They left. It just bothered the hell out of me and thought I'd share. I have no idea what they possibly could have complained about. Anyway, don't let that deter you -- the 4.5 rating on Yelp is pretty right on. Chive is a bit expensive, yes, but you definitely won't leave hungry. Chive Kitchen just hosted a dinner party (wedding reception) for 22 people this past Sunday. Except for the bride and groom no one was vegan, and some people didn't even know what vegan food is. My daughter, the bride, had wanted a meal that would show that vegan food can be very delicious, not just "pretty good for vegan food", just plain delicious food. Chive certainly delivered. Every course was amazing, the service was superb, and every detail was attended to. They even had a game and special drinks for the two young children who otherwise might have been quite put out by the whole affair. Honestly not sure why it took me so long to write a review for Chive because I've thought about this place everyday since I ate here. First of all, it's so wonderful going somewhere and knowing you can order anything on the menu. It's truly a beautiful thing. Then, when all of those things on the menu sound delicious... It's incredible. I had a really hard time deciding what to get, but we ended up with the spicy nachos, buffalo burrito, buffalo seitan sandwich, and banana cake. The nachos were so good I immediately regretted not ordering another plate of them for my entree. They were loaded with toppings and definitely big enough to share. I didn't try the burrito but my boyfriend also gave Chive 5 stars so... I'm assuming it was good. The buffalo sandwich was HUGE and delicious. Huge piece of crispy-breaded seitan loaded with buffalo sauce. The fries weren't super crispy but they were well-seasoned and still delicious. We got the banana cake to-go because we were stuffed by this point, and I'm so glad it was a giant slice so we could eat it twice. I haven't had too many cakes since going vegan, but this cake was one of the best cakes I've ever had -- vegan and non-vegan. My birthday is 8 months away and I'm still looking forward to ordering it then. Another great thing about Chive is it's next to The Cheese Lady, which sells Violife cheeses. Visited from NYC - ate at every vegan restaurant in detroit. This one just edges out greenspace for number 1. (they are the only two I would rank highly - they could compete in the nyc vegan scene). Now, I'm a meat lover but will eat anything and usually don't mind vegan options, however this burger just didn't quite get me. The restaurant itself was clean and quaint, very tight space. Which is fine as it creates a very intimate feel. The price is a bit more than I expected. I guess the value and the taste just didn't align. I have been spoiled with the Chicago vegan restaurants that blows me away and makes me forget that eating a plant based meal so I apologize that to me, it pales in comparison to some of my chicago faves. I tried a couple of vegan alcoholic beverages both were quite pricey and cough syrupy. Not even worth remembering their names. I am gluten free and dairy free (sensitive-no allergies). Note: this is not a dedicated gluten free facility. Best for people that can tolerate cross contamination as the frier etc. is not a dedicated gluten free fryer. With that said, every meal I've had there has been great! From the drinks down to dessert-everything is well prepared, looks great, and tastes amazing! the chocolate beet cake is out of this world good!! And I've never had a drink there I didn't like! Always well put together options, along with some great alcohol-free mocktails as well! I don't like to drink much and it's really great to see a restaurant also catering to those that want something delicious without alcohol. Always have had great service from the wait staff as well! I would definitely recommend this place! The GF options on the menu are marked as such, so it's very easy to note which options are available. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars out of 5 is because I feel if they offered GF buns and a GF meat alternative, it would really broaden the selection for GF diners. read more
