I just had my wedding last weekend and we worked with Chowhound Gourmet. Working with Lucretia, John and the servers was lovely and I will recommend their food/services to anyone. The tasting experience was easily one of my favorite parts of planning my wedding. The servers did an amazing job the day of our wedding as well and I again cannot recommend them enough. They made sure all the plates and utensils, glasses were taken care of. Although everything we tried was amazing, I do have to give a shout out to John's mushroom risotto! The entire team was super helpful through the entire planning process. My guests raved about the food and kept talking about how good the food was! Chowhound catered our wedding and it was the best decision we made for our night. The staff was incredible and worked seamlessly to make everything perfect and we got so many compliments from our guests and how friendly and professional all of the servers were. But, the highlight was the FOOOD! I don't know how John and his staff do it. Our venue did not have an onsite kitchen, so we were nervous about the quality of dinner being compromised - somehow it was even better than on our private tasting day. Every single guest plate was plated beautifully and tasted perfect, which we know because I think every single guest told us how amazing their dinner was. I attended a wedding recently, and Chowhound Gourmet catered it. If I were to give this review a title, it would be, "What Was Supposed To Be Cold Was Warm, What Was Was Supposed To Be Warm Was Cold". Let me begin with the appetizers. Most of them were of the frozen variety that can be found at your local supermarket or Costco... and, most of them were cold or only vaguely warm. They had been sitting in the staging area too long before they were brought out. Biting into a cold crab Rangoon, or congealed tartlet is not appetizing at all. There were cold crab Rangoon, cold tarts, cold dumplings, and very salty cold meatballs. There were very sad looking and even sadder tasting caprese skewers; a tiny bocconcini ball along with a grape tomato and a wilted basil leaf that looked like it had been plucked off a half dead plant. The appetizers were not good. When we were finally seated, they brought around a bread basket that was filled with the tiniest rectangular shaped rolls I have ever seen. The rolls were almost smaller than the butter pats provided for them, and there weren't even enough for everyone at our table. When someone asked if they could get one, the server said, "I'll have to check and see if we have more." She never returned with more rolls. When they arrived with our meals, everyone discovered their meal was cold. When I say cold I mean COLD. My tenderloin was cold, and the triangle of scalloped potatoes was so cold that I was dubious about whether or not it had ever been reheated! I have never been to a wedding where the meals were served cold. Now, the venue we were at did not have a dedicated kitchen, but as a professional caterer, you should have a mobile kitchen capable of reheating dishes and keeping them warm. If I had to make an educated guess, I would say they prepared the food in their kitchens, put it into trays in their catering vans, brought it to the venue and plated it hoping it would still be warm enough. It wasn't. It was cold. In contrast to this, all of the drinks that should have been ice cold were warm. Warm beer and pop were provided in the smallest cans you could ever imagine. They did not provide ice for the warm pop, either. The mixed drinks appeared to be cold, but I did not have one so I cannot confirm that. I was scratching my head wondering why a professional catering company would not have put all of these drinks on ice hours before the event so that everything was ice cold when the time came to begin serving. I've read some really good reviews for Chowhound Gourmet, and maybe they were on their A-Game at those events, but they certainly weren't at this one. We were so hungry after the wedding that we stopped at Burger King on our way home as that was one of the only places still open. Chowhound Gourmet failed at this wedding, and I hope the couple spoke with the owners and made them aware of the issues. The problem is, guests typically don't complain at a wedding. It's bad form. And the married couple isn't going around checking on everything. They may have been oblivious to it all. At least we have Yelp reviews to provide commentary such as this. Take heed if you're in the market for a caterer. read more

I contacted Chowhound because we had a Christmas party coming up And the owner's response was fast and he was very knowledgeable and very accommodating. The food was absolutely delicious and was a big hit with everyone at work. I even had to pass on the phone number because people wanted the phone number so that they could cater their parties at home. Chowhoud Chefs prepared a funeral luncheon for my dad. The food was awesome! John and Jeff prepared chicken, ham, pasta dish, mixed greens salad, nice rolls, and roasted vegetables. It was so nice to have a wonderful meal in honor of my dad. We have a wedding celebration coming up later this year and we plan to use them for that meal as well. Chefs John and Jeff came to the rescue when our normal holiday crowd tripled in size, far more than 1 oven could handle. Despite some skeptics in our foodie family, we were thrilled with the bounty of food we had to offer our guests. Although known for our own delicious cooking, I have to say I plan to use Chowhound Gourmet again. Chef John Breeland of Chowhound Gourmet was the best caterer, and we would recommend him 110% percent. He impressed us from the first meeting to the very last bite. I am a bit of a foodie, so the most important part of the wedding planning to me was the food. I spoke with 6 other caterers in Southeastern Michigan before finally deciding on Chef John. Not only did he have the most innovative and fun sample menus on his website, but he was able to create a personalized menu for our wedding, and even recreated some of our favorite dishes. The service that he and his staff provided on the day was impeccable. If you are getting married, you absolutely must go with Chowhound Gourmet. Few more highlights: - The food was amazing (coriander steak, burgundy braised chicken, morel risotto, wild mushroom tartlets, roasted eggplant with pomegranate, "biscuits and gravy" hors d'oeuvres...) My husband took one bite of his meal, said that he wanted to kiss the chef, and that it ranked amongst Michelin starred restaurants. Wedding guests kept coming up to us to tell us how delicious the food was, and it made us so happy to see our guests get thirds and even fourths. Two weeks after our wedding, guests are still texting us about how it was the best wedding food they have ever had. - Communication was so clear and prompt. He always made sure to send an updated proposal after each change. - He created a custom menu that was perfectly tailored to our guests. My husband's family is from the South, my family is from Asia, and some guests were vegetarian/vegan, so believe me when I say it was no easy feat to create this wonderful menu! - Value was exceptional. Chef John's prices are also clearly shown on his website, which made it such a breeze to plan with him. - On the day of the wedding, there was nothing for us to do or stress about. Now that my wedding is over and I have time to settle back into my life I want to tell everyone how wonderful Chowhound Gourmet and John Breeland were during the planning of my wedding. Originally we found Chowhound on wedding wire wedding planning app. And from start to finish John was available to answer all of my questions. The event space The Jam Handy Detroit was not a location that John and his team was familiar with and he made it very important to go and view the space ahead of time to make sure that our wedding ran smoothly. After choosing our original menu for the tasting John cooked every item for us to try, not just the main dishes. Everything was amazing at the tasting and even better at the wedding. Chef John catered our wedding in November and 7 months later, people are still raving about the food!!! I met Chef John at the Detroit Bridal Show where I was specifically looking for a caterer. He stood out to me because he made something different, a tropical rice pudding that I still remembered weeks later! Being in the food industry, that spoke to me that I remembered that food item weeks later! When my fiance and I met with him, he made a menu specifically for us and our budget! Chowhound Gourmet is an excellent company and I would recommend them to anyone. My wedding reception was held at a park pavilion and I was concerned that it might come across too much like a graduation party type event rather than a wedding. Chowhound Gourmet helped give my event that extra bit of class. The food was delicious and unique and the onsite servers did an excellent job of presenting it in a really classy way even though we were using fancy looking disposable flatware and plates. I was really impressed with the onsite servers too. They arrived about two hours early to set up, so there was no worrying about them. I figured they would only be responsible for setting the food out and making sure that the food stayed well stocked but they also went around cleaning up the little cups and glasses the food came in as people finished them. I told everyone that the food was the wedding detail that was most important to me and Chowhound Gourmet did not disappoint! read more
