The prices here are ridiculously high, but I was happy with the items I found. That is, until I got home and realized I was overcharged almost $30. This company doesn't have barcoded tags, so the cashiers manually type in the prices at checkout. It very clearly didn't work in my favor. I called to see if I could get a reimbursement, and they told me no as their policy wouldn't allow it. Pretty ridiculous since it wasn't my doing & they get their items for FREE. I love the concept of this store. I always feel used to feel good donating here, up until this evening... I came in to donate a few beautiful bookcases because I don't need them in my new residence. However, as it was five minutes after five this evening, the employee stated (practically bellowed) "we don't take donations after five." Ok, sounds nice and friendly! Guess I'll have to keep the bookcases in the back of my truck until tomorrow. Hopefully someone a little more helpful is working then! read more

My friend and I have been visiting this location due to its pretty good selection of plus size clothing, but today we were shocked to see the treatment of a customer today. An older woman (perhaps in her 60s-70s) was making a purchase and kindly asked for assistance to load her things. Mind you, she had very few items, none of them remotely heavy. She had a sling on and informed of a shoulder injury making it difficult for her to carry her large frames/wall decor. The employees told her no and said this is "against policy". WELL, I would like to see a copy of this so called "policy", since this poor woman was almost in tears! My friend and I ended up loading her things into her car for her. FOR A CHARITY CASE, YOUR PEOPLE ARE QUITE UNKIND. I mean, this woman was having a rough day as is and a small act of kindness makes a difference. Do better. AND I am serious, I would genuinely like to see these policies, because they are downright ridiculous. read more

I went there on Saturday 10/21. I had a 4 boxes of things to donate. I asked the lady at the register where does the donations go. She told me where. She was decent. Then came another lady who told me to put the donations on top of a bin that was pretty much already filled up. She rolled her eyes at me(so rude). Mind you I was donating some pretty nice things, since I recently moved and wanted a new vibe in my house And wardrobe. I took the first box out. Then then the last decided to move the empty bin and the one that was halfway full. I thought that was rude as I had explained that I had four boxes of stuff. If people are donating things be grateful. Her service was just too rude for me and I could have took my things to other places where ppl would be more appreciative. read more

Do not shop at this store. I travelled from Maryland just to look around at this store when I come in town. I saw a piano and three beginners book for my students. I also found a nice guitar for the music school that I support. I went to the counter to pay for the items and the cashier told me they are not for sale. Is this because I'm a black man. Very small men's and boy's sections while about 80% of the store is women's clothing. There is a small selection of furniture which was good to see and could come in handy if you're in need of some cheap furniture. Music, books, an movies selection is decent and I was able to find a handful of movies to add to my collection. There was sizeable about of knick knacks as well. read more

I love this store for women's clothes. There is always nice and clean clothes here. It doesn't smell like some thrift stores do, either. They have seasonal always separate and a special section for lularoe. I haven't been lucky with men's stuff, but I don't usually in thrift stores. Although this thrift store wasn't fantastic it gets extra brownie points for supporting a great cause. How can you not want to spend money to support Children?? The thrift store is your basic thrift store without anything standing out. They have a pretty big shoe selection and actually I really loved at least 3 pairs of shoes but too bad I have skis for feet and couldn't fit into any of them. They also had at least 5 new pairs of boots (I think some department store must of donated these). Again the accessory section is non existent and the clothing selection not so good. However, I think you can find some good household items here. **a little secret that I probably shouldn't divulge but will anyways - you can bargain for some items here...lets say there's a scratch or something a little off you can ask for a discount. read more

I've been coming here for 20 years and I'm obviously loyal. That said, the sore can use improvement. The air conditioning is usually broken and being 8 months pregnant in there in the dead of summer is a deal breaker for me. The housewares selection is always great, and you can usually count on some really affordable furniture and art. I usually pick up big paintings just for the frames. Negatives aside from the heat include the staff who is really hit or miss in the friendly department and the general disorganization of the clothing. read more

An above-average thrift store with a slightly better selection than most, plus all proceeds go to the Children's Hospital. I don't know when they restock, but I went on a Sunday and it didn't seem like it had been picked over. Walked away with two work-appropriate shirts for $2.96 each that were in good condition. I was disappointed with the dresses--mostly long, floral, and dowdy or made of denim. Not a lot of shoes or jewelry. Then again it's hard to judge stores like this that rely on donations and don't really get to pick what they sell. It could have been much better organized, though. I couldn't discern any order to the clothes--most thrift stores will at least organize by size or color, but CHKD doesn't appear to. This made going through the racks all the more tedious, and I got fed up with it pretty quickly. read more

This particular store needs better management. Racks too stuffed to look at clothes, dirty, disorganized, and my pet peeve the clothes in all CHKD stores are priced too high, and not uniform. For instance there are multiple prices for blouses, tee shirts, dresses. Some items like warm coats that people need can run as much as $40 and more. Stained, ripped, clothes that are missing buttons, or lacking belts should not be $9.99 or even $5.99. You can find similar clothing at Best Thrift, USA Thrift, and Thrift Store City for so much less, and in better shape. I think people would stop donating to CHKD if they shopped at the stores. But with 27 locations they have cornered a lot of the donation market and seem to be able to ask whatever they want. Not really a "community thrift store." read more

On August 10th around 3:00 PM, my husband and I were visiting the CHKD on Little Creek. We were standing at the check-out desk when one of the clerks near the furniture area began shouting and waving a sales tag around. It wasn't the volume, it was the content of her language that was offensive. In front of several families with children, she screamed obscenities at a customer who had just paid for a chair. She used the "F-word" several times, loud enough to be heard throughout the entire store. The object of her vulgar tirade remained calm and simply asked to see the manager. We didn't stay long enough to see the outcome; however, if this is the type of people CHKD hires (they must be desperate) we won't be back as it's certainly not conducive to the charitable attitude CHKD is supposed to garner. read more

UPDATE AND IMPROVEMENT: A manager of the Thrift Store operations contacted me after I had sent a link to my unfavorable review of this store to CHKD and that problem was rectified to my satisfaction. I have often gone to the CHKD store on Little Creek Road in Norfolk over the years for inexpensive books and small unusual gifts, and occasionally ties. Good prices, lots of bargains. People should be aware that clothing can be returned only for exchange, apparently not for store credit, and that this policy might not be fully understood by cashiers. I am upgrading my rating to 4 stars, which would be 5 had I not had one bad experience, but I will continue to use this as my first choice of thrift stores, and am glad to suggest that others do so as well. read more

I tried to donate a really nice sofa and they refused to take it because it has some dog hair on it. All they needed to do was vacuum the sofa but they did not want to put any effort into freshing up a piece before it is placed on the floor. Do not donate to the store on Monticello ave. The sofa is an "Ethan Allen sofa."I could have tried to sell it but was trying to do something nice. read more

Had a terrible experience with the staff manager yesterday. My husband was with his brother (who is a Navy sailor) and was going to buy him a golf club. He was using my phone to get the 25% off coupon and when they went to check out the manager came and took away the club and said it wasn't for sale. I was purchasing some additional clothing for my infant and my husband went to the car. The manager brought the club back and put it back into the container for sale. She told a co worker that she saw him looking it up on the internet and he was just going to resell it because he knew it was worth more so she wouldn't let him have it! Needless to say I old her the truth and left very upset! It's sad that he couldn't even buy a used golf club for his brother at a decent price. His brother has been deployed and has three small children and cannot afford new golf clubs! Very very disappointed to say the least! read more

I cannot review any other CHKD Thrift Store other than the one on Airline Blvd in Portsmouth, VA because I have not been to any other CHKD Thrift store. I love shopping thrift, however, there is a problem with CHKD Thrift on Airline Blvd. This store likes to jack up the price of clothing, shoes and purses if they are a 'brand name' label, or if they were purchased at a high dollar store. These are the things the manager has told me. I also witnessed a customer question why one piece of tupperware was priced at $5.00. It was a small tupperware piece and guess what; EVERYTHING IS USED! Sooooo, I now shop at "Victory Thrift Store," which is in the shopping center at the corner of Victory and George Washington Blvd in Portsmouth VA. Their clothing is, $1.00 for each garment. I believe shoes are $2.00 or $3.00 and purses are $2.00 or $3.00. It does NOT matter whether they are name brand or where they were bought. There is a lot of antiques and glass ware and all are reasonably priced. Hey CHKD Thrift stores, we know it's for the kids, (one of my grandsons was a patient of CHKD NICU for four months), but you are becoming ridiculous with your prices! read more

i love this place. i usually only go on mondays when they give 20% military discount with military id. i believe on wednesdays they give senior discount and usually everyday they have like a special. im not sure but i went yesterday and ladies jeans were $.99 =) WOW! you dont get an additional discount on top of the special but for $.99 i ok with letting my military discount slide =) the people who work there are lovely. i think the manager i dont know if she was but she sounds mean but it really nice, she is just doing her job the best she can. 7 day exchange policy is nice to just make sure you have your receipt with the tags still attached. some prices are a little high for what they are worth in my opinon but if i really like it ill wait till mondays or until it goes down but if i really need it ill purchase it because this thrift store is a thrift store for helping the childens hospital for kinds daughters. read more
