We also picked up some chocolates my husband loves (I can't eat chocolate), and the marzipan is excellent. You'll want to go in both stores for sure. It's not all cheap-- you might think some of it is expensive-- but for first-rate sweets that are made in their kitchens, it's really not too dear. We'll be back...

Bains sweet shop isn't expensive and the owner John is such a lovely man, he is so charismatic, passionate and takes the time to chat and pass on his knowledge of making Tablet. He even went the extra mile and sent me the recipe which is amazing! I plan to make it with my niece and hope it turns out half as good as Bains tablet. The kids love it, I love it and I will be stocking up on treats for xmas or buying gift vouchers for a later date. I highly recommend visiting and don't worry if you can't get to the shop you can always order online and buy some of those old favourites from your childhood as a gift for yourself or for someone else you know who has a sweet tooth. Lickety Splits definitely has a lot more character than most and if it's wedding favours, gifts, childrens party bags or just some sweets for yourself you don't have to look any further. It's a really nice idea for wedding favours and all you need to do is choose what kind of sweets it is you're after and Lickety Splits will gift wrap everything into little favours, very cute. The decor is gorgeous with wooden flooring, quirky tables and polka dot patterns, it's very bright and airy and all the sweets are organised in glass tubs on fresh white painted shelves. My favourite sweeties have to be the little chocolate cups they're so addictive and moreish. I only found out about this place last week but I think I'll be popping in quite a bit now I know it's there, I could go for some fried eggs just now actually.

The lady in the shop was very knowledgable about her stock. She was able to match people with their local sweets and talk a lot about the changes sweets have gone through over the years (no more cocaine on our sweeties!!). The gallery/gift shop area was a nice little browse too. The shop is very small so our group of 10 was a bit squashed when some other shoppers arrived. The shop is dog friendly and had some water and food outside for any visiting pooches!

I think was that the owners were Italian. The current owners are related to the previous ones from fifty years ago. Now onto the sweets they sell, imagine every sweet you can think of from your childhood well it's in this shop I mean from my childhood and including yours oh happy days, I bought " lucky potatoes " and after the first bite I was instantly transported back. 50 years . They sell ice cream too (you can buy one with toffee pieces included). There are many other types of confectionary available including fudge and traditional, good old fashioned sweeties! There are other things less sweet on offer like an excellent range of malt whiskies. A great place for gifts.

A couple of years ago, their shop expanded to include a little café, where you can enjoy their chocolates with a hot drink. My favourite combination has to be tablet and a tea with no sugar, so you can get the contrast in the two. I bought a box of the chocolates for Maw once and she said they were fantastic, although they're the kind of ones you can only eat 2 or 3 of at a time. For it being such a small, quality business, prices actually aren't that bad.

I am a romantic man…read more Being Finnish, my missus has a sweet tooth to rival any Scot, whilst managing not to be obese. It's a mystery. Anyhow, I recall her excitement at finding this place a while back but never having been in. I took it upon myself to do all the work and pick her up some chocolates for a mini-celebration. They might have been better than the ones I have just worked through from Marks and Spencers I got from Christmas, and were certainly better than Thorntons. Everything in Thorntons sort of tastes the same, in the same way everything in McDonalds also tastes the same. The staff were friendly and chatty and more or less done the work on my behalf to be fair with regards to buying the chocolates, all I done was actually pay for them. Didn't pay as much as I was prepared to either so I treated myself to a cup of coffee, which was also above average. I am a romantic man. Who knows how to treat himself as well.
