The grandiose store front does leave an impression on you. The rich smell of roasting coffee beans is enough to wake anyone up. This place has an easy to understand setup. Long counter on the left for the cafe and a long counter on the right for the store. As we were not purchasing any beans to take home the store with it's seemingly endless selection of different coffee blends didn't get much attention from us. The wife ordered a coffee and I a hot chocolate. I don't remember seeing any tables, just one long counter that snaked it's way around the edge of the store with stool after stool lined up. The wife gave her cappuccino a 10 out of 10. This is coming from a woman who's highest score at any Australian cafe has been 3! She is absolutely the pickiest person when it comes to coffee. I've tasted very good hot chocolates, but this one... this one... I've never had my breath taken away by a hot chocolate before. It was so silky smooth and rich in chocolate taste that I was considering marrying it. The finest blend of chocolate and hot fresh milk. The waitress seemed very happy with our praise. The salad was pretty good. The red onion, olives and feta cheese were particularly fresh compared to anything in the U.S. and the cheese bread was super soft. We are used to the chewy sourdough one from San Francisco, but this was solid in a different way. I know this store got only three stars on here but it's clearly a different bakery now. They appear to have won a bunch of awards, but I am not sure since I couldn't read the French on the certificates on the wall. We stayed right across the street so it was convenient for us. This will be our go-to bakery while staying here. I plan to try their mini pastries with chocolate chips next. They were perfectly laminated and the ideal size for a borderline diabetic. I wouldn't travel across town to eat here since there's so many bakeries in Marseilles, but if you're in the neighborhood, this is a good place to go.
