New kids on the block, the Chocolateria crew, were still making the ropes - not even ready to learn them yet - when my mate and I called in for a post-burger sweet treat. It was a little unclear whether they were counter or table service (turns out counter for takeaway only) and staff were running around a little aimlessly. But eventually we got settled and given a set of menus. We ordered, only to be asked again by a different waitress if we wanted to place our order. Our food (churros with chocolate dipping sauce) and drinks (Spanish hot chocolate, one with mint, one with peanut butter) arrived in a timely fashion. All were delicious, but the drinks in particular were exceptionally rich and could have been half the size. Upon leaving we were told that the payment system had completely melted down and the staff relied on us to tell them our order and complete payment. Despite the issues with our short visit we both agreed we'd be back: chalk these up to teething issues and breathe in the chocolately goodness. The premise of this place is too good to pass up and definitely deserves a second try. read more

Every time I go to South Bank, San Churro is one of my favorite dessert option. I like this more than max benner because 1. No long queue 2. More option for the hot chocolate and other ice cream option 3. Table service and excellent service 4. Accept epftos an card with no minimum amount 5. Their Churros taste much better than max benner waffles (my opinion) 6. I'm a big fan of ice chocolate. It has a very nice one, generous amount of the ice cream inside the hot chocolate. We went on a Tuesday night and the place was packed even then! But it didn't take long to get a seat. Ordering was quite efficient, once I'd gotten one of the waiters attention. The food came out reasonably fast, however the coffees were delayed a lot. It worked out ok, cause we needed the coffees at the end anyway. No need to comment on the food - loved it. Pretty great stuff and the Spanish sauce was amazing too... Definitely recommend this place. read more

Churros + Chocolate?!?! I think I found my dessert heaven. If anyone knew me, I have a massive sweet tooth, no matter what, I always have room for dessert. I have been here 2 times and have tried two different things: Churros for 2 with dark chocolate and caramel dips along with a scoop of spicy chocolate ice cream & Banana chocolate churro sundae. Be prepared to spend a little more than you normally would for a dessert, so I highly recommend splitting with someone. Both items were delicious especially the caramel dip that comes with the churros. It's not any ordinary caramel that I have had before, but there's definitely something a little extra. The spicy chocolate ice cream sounds odd, but it's a MUST! The moment you spoon it into your mouth, the rich chocolate takes over and next thing you know, there's a spicy kick at the end. read more

We've been here a few times now and have received the same great service every time. The staff are friendly and efficient. Our orders have come out very quickly from the time we've ordered. One thing i would suggest is get here early, a few times we have walked past and the line has been out the door and onto the street. The portion sizes are rather large which I've discovered a few times when going "but it didn't look this big in the menu!". So these are all the things that I've had... And surprisingly I've had so many great experiences!! Filled churro - hazelnut chocolate, filled churro - Spanish caramel, churros for one, churros for two with extras, crema catalana which was really good but pretty heavy too, chocolate volcano... Like we have to make sure not to eat too much before going there! I've also tried the death by chocolate cake, I nearly died!! I don't think it was finished by the time we were about to leave! The cookie cha-cha was so nommy! So delicious and great... I finished the entire thing so fast!! But I couldn't really finish the ice cream... Sorta shared everything with it without the cream of course! The peanut butter besos was pretty good too, it's not too heavy and not to sweet! I've had the mango smoothie more than a couple of times... Even with a cold and I managed to taste and drink the entire thing it was so delicious and I'd do it again! The coffee frappe, the iced mocha frappe, and the iced coffee are all great especially with soy milk! Yep I'm lactose intolerant to a point and I've suffered so many times... But these guys make it so well! The San churro sundae is so heavy and so delicious, and yes... You do have to somewhat starve yourself a bit before eating it. Actually don't have dinner and share it. It's best!! Like whoa... Be prepared to start slow and enjoy it all!! Normal drinks wise... The chai latte, the milk chocolate, the classic Spanish, Azteca are pretty good too. Well after I lovely night out on the town I thought ''I fancy a night cap'' So I decided to try one of their delicious looking hot chocolates. Whilst waiting I noticed the ambiance was quite fair much like their prices. When my hot beverage arrived I were giddy with excitement at the look of this velvety, smooth drink that was enticing me in with its subtle steam dancing playfully around my nostrils. After salivating over the sight of this milky chocolate drink I took that first step into what could potentially be Chocolate Heaven or a tumble into a brown river of Hades. I dived in nose first.... Oh the indulgence! I felt like as if I had swallowed a mouthful of warm, chocolatey silk. It slid down my gullet like a stampede of sweet wilder beast. It were that great I barely noticed the searing, burning pain on my tongue. So I stayed for a while and enjoyed my little escape from the crushing weight of the world. Sadly whilst I was kissing the sky with my mug of chocolate ecstasy someone farted near me and right ruined the moment. It proper smelled rancid but I suppose blame cannot be held with the cafe. Anyway, to sum up they do a magical hot chocolate sans the additional smell. read more

For a miserably cloudy day, San Churro sure as brightened up my day! The churros here were definitely some of the best I've had. You think that the portions are small on the menu but they are a generous serving and sure do fill you up in no time! We had some Spanish hot chocolate with our orders which was the perfect compliment to our meal. I definitely recommend the "Hot & Cold" - a brilliant blend between hot chocolate with a scoop of delicious white chocolate ice cream. Their coffee is also quite delish! It's Fairtrade Organic Coffee so you know that the farmers who produced the beans are getting a fair deal and the earth that produced the bean is free from pesiticides and chemicals! If you're looking to fill yourself right up in a short amount of time then this is the place to visit! read more

San Churro--Still in its infancy in South Bank, my friend and I decided to give this place a go when we both had chocolate cravings but didn't want to line up at Max Brenner. We were, of course, pleasantly surprised to find that it was table service. The complimentary water, which we did not have to ask for, was also a bonus. My friend ordered a skinny cappuccino and I ordered the classic Spanish hot chocolate. We also decided to share the churros for two. When asked, we opted to get the milk and dark chocolate melts; neither of us are fans of white chocolate, which is the third option. We also decided to get icing sugar dusted on top, as opposed to cinnamon sugar. When the churros arrived, they were hot and crispy, but seemed to lose heat rather rapidly. The good thing was that they didn't get soggy, but I can't help but feel that the churros from the Churro Man at the South Bank markets are tastier. The melted dark chocolate was superior to that of Max Brenner's, but I still prefer the melted milk chocolate from MB. My chocolate was lovely and creamy. In terms of texture, a classic Spanish hot chocolate seems to sit somewhere between a normal hot chocolate and an Italian hot chocolate. As Beck W noted, it was rather rich, so I left about a fifth of it behind, but I would have felt just as sickly ordering a dessert and a chocolate drink at Max Brenner or probably any other dessert place. (I was just being greedy and curious.) I can't speak on behalf of my friend about her skinny cappuccino, although she seemed to enjoy it; she also said it was nice to have the coffee to cut through the chocolate. As Beck W also noted, the wait staff need to work on their service a little. They were friendly and polite, but when my hot chocolate arrived, I was missing a spoon. Not a huge deal, but just a detail to note. All in all, the place was fine. The decor is warm and inviting, as a chocolateria should be, and I really enjoy the fact that their logo looks a bit like Rafael Nadal (irrelevant to forming my opinion of this place, just something I feel like I need to tell the world). However, I was hoping for more based on the hype from my friends. It was alright and a nice alternative to Max Brenner, but when you're satisfying a sugar craving, do you really just want an 'alright alternative'? (Of course, the caveat is that I've only been once, so you have to take that into consideration when reading this review. There was plenty of other yummy-looking stuff to try, from the truffles and the macarons to the ice cream and milkshakes and more. I'll definitely go back to give it a go... but with lower hopes based on this one experience. At the moment, Max Brenner is still South Bank's fancy chocolate dessert king.) read more

It's okay I guess. The Churros are a little skinnier than I like them to be but they come out hot fresh and crisp. Try the Spanish iced latte they put a nice strong shot on the bottom and it goes down quite smooth! I like that this place opens until 11pm on weeknights and midnight on the weekends, it's a cool place with sit down service in and out for the cool nights although they left the window open so we may have just sat outside. Yum! Yum! Yum! If you are a chocolate fan like me, you will love San Churro! Went with friends on the weekend and it was not too crowded. I had the Peanut Butter Shake, he had the Choc Banana Shake and we had the fondue platter for two and our friend had the "San Churro" cake. The drinks very very yummy and surprisingly not very heavy! The fondue was yum also. The cake was delicious and huge and it would normally take two people to polish off a cake that size but my friend finished it on her own - a mighty effort! The reason it is not getting 5 stars is because of a few things (1) it needed more chocolate for the fondue, (2) the 'fudge' that came with the fondue was not to my taste (I think it was just chocolate and sugar!) and (3) I asked for no cream on my shake and they put cream on it. The second destination of my self proclaimed chocolate tour, Chocolateria San Churro is a lovely little shop on Grey Street, quite close in fact, to Max Brenner. However, I found this place to be better than Max Brenner, both in terms of location (it's closer to Cineplex) and options (churros). Alongside the aforementioned churros that they are named after, they have a smorgasbord of chocolatey goodness waiting for you. Great to stop by for a nice warm cuppa or a little something to munch on the way to your next destination or what have you. It also has outdoor seating, which I always prefer in any eating joint. The place is always lively and aromatic, mouth-wateringly so, in fact. It's also great for bringing your kids and friends, so that you all can have a sick time. read more

San Churro = Churros enough said! The churros was great, we had dark and milk chocolate dips, the milk chocolate was nice but the dark chocolate tasted a bit oily. Coffee was OK but you don't go here for great coffee. The restaurant itself could do with a good clean and tidy up, it's looking a bit tired and worn.
