    Fish Roll
    Felecia D.

Rooting for Them, But the Food Missed the Mark I was genuinely excited to support a new Black-owned business in our community. In the beginning, the place was packed--lines inside and out--so we waited until things slowed down and finally visited after lunch. I completely understand that new businesses need time to work out the kinks, and I came in hopeful. But unfortunately, the "fish rolls" were a big disappointment. I bought five thinking they'd be great to share, but I could barely eat one. I shared with three colleagues and we all agreed--they didn't taste like fish at all. Honestly, they reminded me of hush puppies but with the texture of a sweet roll. If there was fish inside, it was completely lost in the mix. The name is misleading, and I would suggest renaming them to better reflect what you're actually getting. The fries weren't bad, but the box wasn't full. I requested Cajun and lemon pepper on the side, and the receipt said I got Cajun fries--but there was barely any seasoning visible at all. The energy felt a little chaotic. There was a man--possibly the owner--running in and out to hand off orders to people in the drive-thru. You could tell they were doing their best to keep up with the traffic, which is a good sign that the community is showing support. That's why I hesitated to write this review. I really want them to win, and I believe things can improve over time. But in order to keep the support, the food has to match the buzz. I'm hoping to return in the future and see some growth and better consistency.

    Jerk Chicken Wrap

Fries not done& small portions bag not even anywhere near full and not worth the $9 for kids meal . I came here for the jerk chicken sandwich & that was no more I got the jerk chicken wrap and it was nothing like the picture at all. It was so small Taco Bell burritos are wayy bigger. Nothing was seasoned & my fries were undercooked. I'm extremely disappointed after spending $22.

The Choixes Supreme (2 sliders Drink Fries)

The owner Luda had very good customer service! I loved that I could tell he liked doing what he was doing. That's how it should be. The food was a plus honestly!! Everything was made fresh. I hope they stay in business. I had a fresh pink lemonade with cajun fries and two sliders.

I am not sure why some sliders and several chicken wings took 40 minutes to make, and it seemed like the staff was not sure either

I'd definitely recommend making a reservation if you're going at a busier time. The service was fast and friendly, I had an overall very good experience! The peanut stewed spinach really caught my eye, so I knew I'd go for a dish with that included. I ended up going for the Nybani with half spiced rice and half coconut rice, with added spicy sauce. I thought it was really good! The beef was super rich and tender, both rices were good but i preferred the coconut rice after adding the spicy sauce. The peanut stewed spinach was very yummy, but I'm glad it came on a dish with a wide array of flavors. Would definitely recommend giving this spot a try if you're visiting town or local to Detroit!

The restaurant is beautiful, and the menu is fantastic - we wanted everything. Ultimately, we decided to share the vegan sambusas (my mom is vegan, and we really appreciated how vegan friendly the menu is), which were delicious. Then, between the three of us, we tried: Nyumbani (tender beef, slow-simmered in ripened tomato sauce; served with fried plantains, peanut-stewed spinach, and rice); Samaki (crisp flash-fried fish garnished with tangy sauteed onions; served with fresh corn salad, fried plantains, and stewed yellow beans; and Intore (fragrant eggplant stew served with peanut-stewed spinach or savory yellow beans, and rice). We also shared a fizzy passionfruit juice (carbonated house-made passionfruit juice) and Tamu (sweet dessert pudding made from creamy avocados and tangy passion fruit, garnished with chia seeds). Of everything we ate, my only minor complaint is that the beef wasn't very tender. The Samaki (those onions on that perfectly pan-fried fish), the vegan sambusas, the spiced rice pilau, the Tamu, and the fizzy passionfruit juice were all some of my favorite bites of food from our whole long weekend in Detroit. The service could have been a bit more attentive (we waited a little bit to be welcomed and had to get our server's attention to put in some dessert and get our check when the meal was going a little long), but it was a friendly spot in addition to the beautiful space and delicious food. Overall, Baobab Fare was one of our favorite restaurants over our long weekend in Detroit. I know all three of us (vegan and non-vegans) would love to return. If you love East African food - or if you don't know much about it and want to try it - Baobab Fare is a great option for any meal!
