Tables on one side of the room, bar on the other, dance floor/stage in between. Our friend's band was playing at the VFW (a gig's a gig, right?), so we thought we'd check it out. Upon entering we quickly realized that we were easily two of the youngest people in the place - awesome! Everybody was so nice and welcoming. We were made to feel comfortable right away. For a requested $5 donation we could've enjoyed a pork roast dinner with mashed potatoes and all the fixin's. We opted not to, but it looked delicious. Homemade for sure Drinks were incredibly cheap! $3.50 for a bottle of Pacifico or a Bud Seltzer. Trish was our outstanding, super friendly bartender. We loved Trish! Good times aboard The Ship.

I stooped on by and was greeted by the bartender. I forgot her name at the moment but she was very nice. This particular location has only been open for about 3 or 4 years. The inside is very nice and there are screens all over the place. If you are a member the drinks are about 3 or 4 dollars. I will definitely be stopping by here, as I live in Lemon Grove. That said, our visit also gave us a free museum-type tour of clothing and fabrics, from seven of the cultures in the Diamond Neighborhoods: Mexican, Samoan, Somalian, Laotian, Sudanese, African-American, and Filipino, representing elements of each culture and highlight their rich traditions. I was amazed by the artisan craftsmanship and array of colors. It was stunning! I don't know if these exhibits rotate, but it was a welcome pleasure, and I'd be happy come back again just for the tour! The Jacobs Center is a beautiful building with both indoor and outdoor venues. Upon entering the building a female security guard greeted us and provided information about the rates of the main floor Banquet Rooms and Main Hall rental. She was very nice, friendly and helpful allowing us to view each of the Banquet Rooms. The Main Hall room was set up for an upcoming event. As we were leaving we asked if they provided catering and she directed us to True Roots located at another entrance of the building. Once outside we stopped the first person we saw and asked about True Roots. It just so happen she (Beth) was the person in charge of rentals and catering. Once inside her office she gave us lots of information about the menu, catering and so on. She also took us upstairs to more Banquet Rooms that fit our needs perfectly. The rooms were clean and in great condition. Beth was very helpful and gave us additional information regarding decorations, set up and cleanup. They provide the tables and chairs, easels and some minor decorations (we can also bring our own). They set up the room; they clean up after and provide catering. The rates are affordable: we are interested in a room capacity of 40-60 people half day rate (4 hours) cost between $150-$350 dollars slightly higher for the Halls and not including the food. Beth gave me a copy of the menu and the rates for the rooms so I am very excited to start planning this event.

This is a new spot that opened up during the pandemic and is starting to gain traction in the…read morecommunity. It host a handful of events aimed at uplifting BIPOC artists and creatives. The event I went to was called Black & Brown SD Social Club Presents - Open Session 001 A Mixed Media Showcase. And it was the first one they did. It was a small but powerful venue. The outside was filled with murals and color. The inside need some work. There were a couple of photos, seating for about 25 and a tv. It'll be full with about 75 people. It's small and intimate place. If you're BIPOC and in the creative arts, be it poetry, improv, arts, dance, yoga etc. then you should check it out. If you're BIPOC and not in the arts, you should come out and network and make connections. It's nothing but love here. I randomly found the event in eventbrite and I'm excited to grow my connections here in SD by coming back for more!
