He made a new chair slipcover to replace a damaged slipcover and it fit perfectly and even had the little Velcro tabs at the bottom. He also made six arm covers which were nicer than the sample I gave him. First class business. read more

I am giving a poor review for Chris Custom Sewing and Alterations based on poor quality and value after visiting the shop four times. I asked Chris to place six snaps on each of two ponchos so they could be used as ponchos and sleeping bags. He charged a lot of money, $65, though I was happy to have my multi-use ponchos. The problem was that many snaps were placed the wrong direction, so the garments did not function as multi-use. When I brought them back to Chris, he was hesitant to switch the male and female sides of four snaps for each poncho - he said it was not possible to set the ponchos up for multiple use. A Taylor should know how to do this. I showed him what needed to be done and then he agreed, and he did it. I thought the charge for correcting his erroneous work would be minimal, however he charged me another $65. When I stated that the cost was high (I had already paid that amount of money for his first efforts), he said he had also hemmed a pair of pants for me (which he did) but hemming a pair of pants and fixing snaps that he put on incorrectly should not cost that much money. I am willing to pay more money for quality and honest work, but that is not what was offered at Chris Custom Sewing and Alterations. read more

I took my daughter's prom dress in to get shortened. The consultation to measure took just a couple of minutes. The alteration was perfect and she is very happy with the results. We will return in the future. read more

Chris is great to work with! He altered 5 pairs of pants for me. We was quick. Pricing was reasonable. He was able to perform the alterations very fast. I think he may be the fasted Tailor I have been to. In fact, the first time I went to him, I was wearing a pair of pants that I initially wasn't planning to have altered but that I decided to have altered upon realizing they were a bit long. To save me a trip, Chris altered one of my pairs of pants while I was there. I felt a little bad because he got really busy right after offering to do that but I really appreciated what he did to save me a trip. read more

Needed to get some pants hemmed with a short deadline. This place came highly recommended from some co-workers. Headed there in a Saturday, having been told it was open - it wasn't. So off early Monday morning to accomplish my task. I was greeted be Chris who measured the length of my pants and asked me when I needed them. When I told him tomorrow if possible. His response was see you then. I could have gotten them within a couple of hours if I wanted to come back. I got there Tuesday and the pants were done to perfection. The length was correct and they were ready to go. I live on the west side and the trip to get there was worth it. Quality of work was good and prices were reasonable. Hours posted in the door are correct - he is open Monday thru Friday. This is a family run business and they deal in cash only. So hit the ATM before you get there. read more

Chris, or who i presume is Chris (and the owner), is very polite and helpful. He will try extra hard to meet deadlines... because my emergencies become his (-: On more than one occasion he has completed my (husband's) alterations that same day. His prices are quite reasonable. So reasonable, in fact, we have felt compelled to tip him, esp. when he calls a few hours after I leave because our clothes are ready, already. The store space is modest with one (or two?) small nooks used for trying clothes on, and marking them up. It's conveniently located if you're near central ABQ, and for the most part you're in and out in less than 10 minutes. I would be remiss if i didn't add that he does great work on complicated problems. My husband and I have needed several adjustments and an unusual pant repair (long story involving a post-wedding reception bar, my husband's favorite suit, and broken glass) and Chris has done excellent work every time. I probably should have led with this paragraph. In closing, I opine that Chris offers everything one wants in an alterations shop. I wholeheartedly recommend giving your business to this local shop. read more

I had a dress to hem and shorten the shoulders. When I dropped it off the lady working at the time took my measurements and said she couldn't quote a price because the owner was gone, but she would call me back with the price. She then looked at the calendar and asked if two weeks from then was okay. It was fine, but I was a bit surprised given the fast turn around times I've read on other Yelp reviews. Then she gave me my copy of the receipt and stabbed the other through the delicate material of the dress. Would it have killed her to pin it to the tag so another hole wasn't put in the material? I went to pick it up today and about fainted when I saw they charged me $48 and change! I asked the man why it was so expensive and he said he would go ask. The same lady that was there when I dropped off the dress came out and all she did was read off the receipt, no explanation. $30 to hem the dress, $15 for shoulder work. Weird that she didn't know a thing about prices when I dropped it off. . . When I was in the fitting room a lady came in to drop off pants to be hemmed. Three pairs of pants, charge $20 and change. Then the other reviews I've seen on here are just like that. The chick that brought in three dresses and a shirt, her charge, $53. I have no idea why my price was so much higher than all of these other peoples'. It's just really frustrating, especially when no one will tell you why . . . I feel scammed. read more

The owner is a nice guy and I had a long conversation with him on my first visit and he had me really hopeful about his work. I explained to him that I'd taken several blazers to another blaze and they'd butchered them. He honestly confessed there wasn't much he could do to repair them, something that I admire from a business standpoint and appreciate as a customer. I had several other items that were untouched and need alterations and I consulted him before committing myself to see if he could do what I wanted and to assure that he understood the fit I wanted. He told me he understood, took some measurements and I decided to let him work his magic. Then came the bill---$65 for alterations to two blazers and a dress shirt. Yikes! Maybe I'm clueless, or maybe that old cliche about NYC being expensive in relation to other places is inaccurate, but this seemed exceptionally pricey. However, there was no turning back at this point, so I took my ticket and left my stuff. I came back a week later and everything was ready to go. I begrudgingly paid the $65 and received my three items. Disappointment immediately set in as I tried on my first blazer and saw that it wasn't the slim, tailored fit I'd requested. Second blazer, same result. I was visibly upset and Chris noticed, but only attempted to comment how good the blazer looked on me. Nice for my ego, but not what I wanted to hear. I gathered up my stuff and left in frustration. I've gone over the initial disappointment somewhat and have since taken stock. Compared to the place that butchered two beautiful blazers I had, this was a step up. Plus, it's not that there was anything wrong with the work he'd done, it just wasn't up to my expectations. Thus, I've given a 3-star rating and will probably return to him unless I find a cheaper and better place. I'm not holding my breath though. read more

CASH ONLY!! I didn't realize this and was a little frustrated when I went to pick up my clothes (they have a sign, I just didn't see it when I dropped off my clothes). Took a chance, based on the reviews, but it was a last-minute decision. I took 3 dresses: 2 needed the straps shortened and one just needed a ribbon replaced; and 1 blouse that needed the length hemmed. All except the dress with the replaced ribbon were brand new so I was a little nervous. Chris and his family did a great job-everything fit quite well. They didn't cut the fabric which is good in the event that they needed further altering. I have no complaints, save a few straggling threads that I asked to have cut before I left. I paid $53 for this work. Not cheap, but one of the dresses that needed the straps shortened required some careful work. It's a bummer being short sometimes. Even petites don't always fit correctly. I'll return here and will up their rating to 5 stars if I'm as happy next time. The real test will be pants, to see if they get the length just right. read more

After 2 years of living in ABQ I have finally found an awesome alterations shop!!!! The owner was positive about the work he could do on my items. He took the time to repeat back exactly what I asked for. And when I picked everything up it was just as we discussed. I am really impressed. In total I got 5 items altered. He added a cell phone pocket to 3 different pairs of workout pants. The pockets have reinforced seams that hold my heavy phone and have held up after at least 5 washes. The other items (pants and a jacket) were also completed just as discussed. He had the items done quickly and ready at the agreed upon time. His price was exactly what was quoted. I had no idea this business was on Yelp, if I could I would give them 6 stars! Chris has been mending and altering clothes for my sisters and I for years. We trust him with our dresses for the most special occasions. I am petite and often have to get sleeves or hems altered and I can never tell any work was done. This visit was no different, when I checked in a pocket on the inside of my coat was torn. And even though the pocket is not visible, they sewed it so I couldn't tell the difference from the other pocket. Also their customer service is exceptional! read more

I've had several pieces of clothing altered here over several visits. Jean, dress pants, and even shirts that were too wide and needed altering. The owner is always nice, asks when I need items (I've even had pants hemmed in 1.5 hours while I ran other errands). He always quotes the reasonable prices before I leave and writes it on a receipt for me. The work itself is very good. I totally recommend this business! read more

I had a good experience prior which was why I thought that when I dropped off a pair of pants with the caveat "call me if it costs a lot to fix them, they aren't worth much", they could handle it. I come by today and get a bill for $16 for a tear repair. This is more than the pants are worth. I paid it but I'll never use this business again. Chris did a great job altering my bridesmaid dress in a short amount of time! He hemmed, took in the sides, shortened the straps and changed out the eye hooks for a different color all in under a week. I wasn't able to get in to see him earlier due to a family emergency and he worked with me to get it done in time. I had a dress hemmed and because the shop was so crowded the day I went to pick it up I didn't try it on. Didn't think I needed to since it took so long for the woman who "marked" the hem in the first place (thought that meant she was being very meticulous). When I got to the wedding I was going to in NC the dress was too long and I was stepping on it (had on same shoes, etc. from when it was measured). So I had to pay to have it hemmed again in NC. When I called Chris to ask if I could get a refund because I had to have it hemmed again (quite a substantial hem again) he said "no" since I didn't try it on in his shop before I left. He should have a sign or tell his customers his no refund policy. I was disappointed no refund, no partial refund, no apology. Be forewarned about his practice. read more

Chris delivers clothes on promise date for a fair price. Unfortunately he keeps spare buttons attached to clothes if they are not sewn into item. Finish work is poor. Ok for very basic alterations. Do not ask for advice on length, cuffs, etc. No eye for fashion or proper fit. I do not recommend taking expensive clothes to him. read more

I called Chris to see if he could take in the waist on a pair of shorts I wanted to wear for my engagement pictures (in CA and I was leaving that afternoon!). He said he could do it. I dropped them off and he told me it would cost $20. I came to pick them up a couple hours later. At first I was concerned because the seam looked off center somehow, but they fit perfectly! I thought the price was a little high, but, given the very fast turn around time that was required on his part, definitely reasonable. overall, i was very happy and will definitely go back. read more

I should have known by the misspelled rooftop sign ... had a down vest there for repair and asked to have it carefully, manually sewn - what did they do: ran a sewing machine with the wrong color thread across and made it much worse than when I brought it! NEVER AGAIN!! Tully's on Central was closed and is now (TG) open again - use her and you'll never be disappointed! read more
