I understand that no mechanic can predict every future failure, but the entire purpose of a pre-purchase inspection is to identify warning signs and help the buyer understand the vehicle's condition and risk. My regular mechanic was backed up and I was in a hurry to get my classic car running. I couldn't figure how the 2 simple cotter pin connector assembly on the throttle rod worked between the carb to the gas pedal, connecting the two. I sent pictures to be sure he know what I was talking about. A less than 5 minute job for someone that knows these things. Quoted "$125. to FIX the problem." Uh. Ok, I was in a hurry, so I opted in. In less than 5 minutes here he told me the linkage on the carb was reversed that "I got the wrong carb" but he could fix it, if I towed to his shop. Ha. So I was charged $125. for 5 minutes diagnostic, told to tow it tow his garage where God only knows what he'd charge to spend 10 minutes drilling a new hole in the proper location to attach the rod. Mmmm. No thanks. Both my regular mechanic and the Summit Customer Service both said they don't even make carbs with reverse linkage I needed. The following review of the Chris' Mobile mechanic service is broken up into different categories: appearance, environment, service, price and overall thoughts. Appearance: Normally I review restaurants and the interior and exterior quality of the spot. With Chris I am just going to simply say he was wearing his mechanic overalls and it made a difference. Purchasing a car from Craigslist you also want to make the seller feel comfortable with an unbiased mechanic. With him not in some regular clothes saying he is a mechanic I believe made a difference in the knowing that he is a mechanic and not some regular Joe Schmoe. 4 stars Environment: Chris has is own shop in West Hollywood and he also does mobile service. Meeting the selling in Van Nuys in a sketchy area was not ideal even with the ghetto bird (police helicopter) flying by and cop sirens nearby did not stop Chris. 5 stars Service: Chris did exactly what he said he was going to do. He was paid to do a pre purchase inspection. He has all his tools, he checked various items on the car: suspension, motor leaks, rust, fluids, read codes with the OBD reader, thread on tires and more. He did not have a print out however, I was able to make my own notes and listened attentively as he does have a tendency for being soft spoken. I believe he was transparent to both myself the buyer and the seller. It's still very early to say if the purchase was a good buy however, that does not diminish his skill. 5 stars Price: For pre purchase inspections he initially charged $160. However because it was on a Sunday which he does not work I was charged $190 which was still a fair price I believe since other pre purchase inspections quoted me between $150-$200. 4 stars Overall thoughts: Chris was knowledgeable, punctual, communicative, and overall helpful in the car buying process in doing a pre purchase inspection. Please take your money to someone who isn't going to try and rip you off at every opportunity he can find. Chris did a prepurchase inspection for me, and initially told me that the car was in great shape, that I was "lucky to find an old BMW in this good condition". So afterwards, I took my car to him to get it checked out more thoroughly and potentially serviced. A day after I dropped off the car, he had me come back in, and without telling me, had already changed the oil, changed my air filters, without my permission or quoting me a price. he then asked for a $500 deposit for the rest of the work, and estimated the work to be around 1000 dollars, for a car that he initially told me was in great shape. Later, I found out that he charged me 150 dollars for an oil change, charging me around 100 dollars for 7 liters of fully synthetic oil. He wouldn't drop this point, he made sure I realized he was using "the premium stuff". Just checked Costco's prices for the actual recommended oil (he put in the wrong oil, smfh) and a 6 liter pack of Mobil 1 0w40 fully synthetic oil (the APPROVED oil) goes for 31 dollars. Stay away from scammers like Chris. He will lie to you, then lie to cover up his lies, and it will never end, until he has taken all of your money. He took advantage of me as a naive first car buyer, and now I am in the hole 1000 for repairs I didn't even ask for. If you are going to pay 150 for an oil change, just take your car to the dealership, it's in much safer hands. read more

Called to see if he repairs tires. I'm in Sylmar, not a horrible drive from NoHo, especially when he also travels to Glendale, etc. I have a totally flat tire and really need someone who could come do the repair on site, as opposed to having it towed, then me having to get someone to drive me over to retrieve my car. Too lazy to drive a bit up the road, and too arrogant to understand his time would have been well compesated. Gotta go give my money to someone who wants it, I suppose... Over all a horrible experience, lots of lies , rude behavior and overcharges. With that being said he charged me to "diagnose " a problem that he wasn't able to fix afterwards, he said that he will send me a colleague of his and the next day he called me and cancel the appointment with no apparent reason. Let's face it, my car is an 18 year old clunker. So I was not surprised when I tried to start it one morning and it behaved as if the battery was dead. We have a great mechanic, but the shop is on the other side of town and just about at the limit of AAA's free tow. So I checked Yelp for a mobile mechanic and found Chris. He was able to come out the same day. He checked everything and found that the battery was fine and the alternator was pretty much toast. So the next day he brought a new alternator and installed it and the Clunker works fine again. There are a couple more issues left to resolve, since clunkers by nature always have something that needs fixing, but Chris will take care of those another day. After 50 years in the business he REALLY knows what he's talking about. He explained everything he was doing and answered all our questions. His price for the repair was super reasonable, too. When the Clunker finally gives up the ghost I will definitely be calling him to help me pick a replacement. read more

Couple of days ago my car stopped in the middle of the road on a Friday evening. I found Chris' info online and asked him if he could fix the car asap. He came by on Saturday and in a matter of less than 2 hours found the problem and fixed the car which was a timing belt issue. What made me appreciate his services even more was the fact that he checked all other issues that might be causing problems in the future and made sure nothing like what happened the night before happens again.
