Since there were no…read morereviews about Melgar Masonry, I took necessary precaution and contacted the references Luis provided and received moderate to positive feedback. I hired Luis to replace the brick steps of my front entrance and as agreed, he replaced the steps with stones. After finishing the steps, the cement in the steps started to leak (like ooze out of the stone-1st picture) and Luis said that his worker used the wrong cement. Luis tried to fix the steps a second time but he used a different stone for the very first step (2nd picture), which does not match the rest of the steps. Also, the grout lines are not the same size in the front entrance and second landing. I contacted Luis again numerous times, he finally responded and said he would stop by to look at the steps. He never showed up. BEWARE...you don't want your front steps to look like mine. You certainly don't want to pay twice so that another masonry contractor can fix Melgar Masonry poor work.

Inquiry regarded both outside excavation and inside remodels. First estimate was through my window, for the outside job, as I was being tested for covid. He was visibly disappointed he could not see the remodels. He later admitted, when he was called back, he low balled to get to see the remodeling needs. He did not get the job initially. He wrote the contract, not me, and we were both very clear about what needed to be done and the scope of the project as he knew the first contractors work needed to be ripped out as it did not follow code or the priority of the necessary slope. I drew pictures. The contract he wrote made it seem he understood priorities and needs. The little work he did do, as the first day got washed out, was not what was agreed upon. I had no idea how he saw his progress by the time it rained, but I believe it was not near enough for what was necessary, and I kept telling him that. I actually used a string level in between the time he left to set the correct grade on one side of the slope, as that was where the stairs blocked proper drainage , and the whole reason for the job. On his return he yelled at me for what I did do, went on saying another contractor would have stopped there. He treated me like an idiot who could not be satisfied with any contractor. I can tell you who will say I can be grateful, complimentary, and pay as soon as job is completed: Shalvey and Son, and Superior Tree Grinding, as well as Renewal by Anderson, that's who! His was not the first step to this job in progress. He stopped treating like an idiot when I agreed he was not the contractor I wanted. Took some wind out of his sails when I did agree. What homeowner would be desperate to get an outside job finished before the first frost? That is in four days as of this review. He really stopped when I showed him a DIY video on his way out. Then he apologized because what more could he say but sorry? He said he was sorry, but I am sure now he was not. He knew he was not going to do all the work he agreed to, because that would be beyond what he thinks is his right as a daily rate, but he wanted to earn the second half of the contract. He did not get to do that as I was not letting him snowball me into believing an ungraded job is what I agreed to. And I have written out a bill for him for my time and resources he used. Like making me ask my neighbor to put soil on their slope so he did not need to bring it anywhere. I now have to level the soil and plant lawn in my neighbors yard and my job is not finished. If he tells you about me I wish I would have the chance to give the other side. From the first day he left a huge mess while it rained, telling me he could put police tape up. Police tape does NOT avoid a home owners liability for someone getting hurt. Halloween would fall within the time I had to wait. Apparently living in an apartment does not give one cause to worry about such things. He told me he would not be back for two weeks, and expected me not to touch the stones, stone dust, slates stacked in my newly paved driveway, thank you to John for your work, or the holes that were in my yard. ( This young man has no idea of the extent of work I have had done on the 3 homes I have owned in 30 years. Not my first rodeo. Yes, getting contractors to do small jobs is tough.) He was upset and yelled at me when he did return a week early, yet without his employee so he could collect his second half. Why and how he never explained. He slandered me to Angie's list when he knew I was extremely displeased with him. His quote was $750.00 for the job. He underestimated because it later became clear that is his rate for an 8 hour day, not per the job, as was the contract we signed. Regardless of the fact he contracted for the job, not by the hour, the 3 hours he put in on the 1st day before it rained was not to the specifications of the contract he wrote. He never used a level except for once on the first day. It rained, he had not finished grading fully for the slope and came back prepared to do the bare minimum. And complained about how much work digging entailed. I learned through him talking about his insurance he has a Bob Cat. Why wouldn't an excavation job not warrant that piece of equipment. I was flabbergasted. Because he could get more money from me using his day rate. I never agreed to a DAY rate, and would not. Any parent knows how long a project can be drawn out by any kid and I have two.
