Been to this beautiful temple many times. Never been here for a Lunar New Year celebration. So decided to visit on Lunar New Year. It is very hard to find parking here, unless you come very early in the morning. This temple is always packed on the weekends, but it is even more busy on Lunar New Year. We drove around in circle trying to find parking here. We end up parking about 5 blocks away. If you can, don't park inside the temple's parking lot, you would have a hard time leaving, since others will parked and block you in. If you plan to stay all day, then that is fine, but if you just want a quick visit to pray, then I suggest you find parking on the streets nearby. After walking for 5 blocks to get to the temple, we can feel the positive, happy vibe, and the good feeling when we finally got inside the temple. Everyone was praying outside the temple, inside the temple. It was so crowded. After we did our prayers, we headed out to the side and back yards. Every weekends and on special occasions, such as Lunar New Year, they have complimentary temple foods. All vegetarian of course and desserts. Lines can be long. But you should be able to find a place to sit and enjoy their delicious foods. I especially like their noodle soup bowl. Although the foods are complimentary, it is good to donate some money to the temple. Give whatever you feel comfortable. Beside the complimentary foods, they have several vendors selling foods to go. They also have the sugar cane drink station. They made fresh to order, very refreshing. Always feel at peace when I visited here. Temple is very nice, both inside and out. read more

This Chua was such a wonderful experience and a beautiful place for a weekend visit. There's so many vendors and options depending on what you are in the mood for. It's really great that those proceeds go to the temple. The bun Bo hue was complimentary and it was really delicious. It definitely had a nice spicy kick to the flavor that I thoroughly enjoyed. The temple inside was very peaceful and there for areas you could pray. The staff all seemed very friendly and welcoming. The parking is definitely very tricky. You have to arrive before 10am to secure a spot and even then there are cars that will park behind you. But, most people are good about leaving their number on the dash to reach out. read more

Last Sunday, we three visited Phat To temple in Long Beach, CAz It was crowded with temple visitors, as usual. I sensed such safe and positive energy when stepped onto the temple's ground. Everyone is welcome and treated with respect! The temple's nourishments were extra delicious. We were offered 1) the famous Mì Tiềm (egg noodle soup) and 2) the specialty broken rice with all the delicious toppings, the pickled cabbage, carrot and daikon, and fresh cucumber, topped with the spicy sauce! 3) Sweet watermelons were for desert. It was given out with no charge to all. Any private donation of your own choice is graciously accepted and can be placed in the donation box. There is no pressure. I bought my favorite freshly pressed sugar cane juice for just $5 a ~12oz cup. Then, I bought the other favorite, coconut and pando waffles, to go! read more

Came here for the first time this past Sunday around 12pm and I loved it! We parked in the neighborhood and walked over. There was so much food! Technically free but they accept cash donations! There is also packaged up food you can buy as well! We got a variety of the free food and some of the packaged food. Found some seats and just DEVOURED EVERYTHING! The food was delicious! Portions were generous! Nice community :) I legit have no complaints at all! We donated at the end and went into the temple to pray. Would definitely be coming back! This is a wonderful Vietnamese Buddhist Temple that my family and I frequent on Sundays to light incense, say prayer and enjoy amazing vegetarian food. For Lunar New Year 2024, I brought my parents here and it was so beautifully decorated! Despite the long lines for free food (cash donation accepted), it's very impressive how smooth the operations are run by numerous Temple volunteers. From cooking to cleaning to vending, it's a well-oiled production out of love and generosity. There were at least a dozen dishes, desserts and drinks to buy to support the temple for $8-$10 per item and they accept cash only. Parking can be difficult if you come before 2pm since this Temple is located within a small residential community. Chua Phat To (Gotama Temple) is a lovely place to visit on a regular basis and especially during Lunar New Year! read more

There is definitely a sense of community here. There's mostly Vietnamese Americans who gather here on Saturdays/Sundays. Every weekend, there's always something going on the agenda, whether it's prayer or a memorial. During my 6+ months of coming here, I've seen a good amount of diversity. If you're not Asian or you don't look Asian, you're bound to get some glances and stares here. However, people don't really treat you differently if you're not Vietnamese (only that they will speak to you in English). I've not only come across students who come here to learn and observe the religion but also Vietnamese immigrants who miss the temple community. No one really forces their opinion/Buddhist teachings on you. No one really makes the assumption that you have to be Buddhist to come here. There's no hostility if you're Buddhist or not Buddhist. There are two types of meals: the rice based meal and the soup based meal. Each week, they like to spice things up and add variety. I almost guarantee that they don't serve the same meals during the following week. They start serving meals as early as 10 am and as late as 3 pm. All the meals are VEGETARIAN and they are quite STRICT ABOUT NOT WASTING FOOD (after all not wasting food is a part of Buddhist culture and I advise everyone to only grab what they have the stomach to eat). The people here work hard every week to provide FREE meals for anyone: the homeless, families, people who get off work and decided to eat here. Basically anyone who drops by the temple and grabbed a plate to eat. Alongside the free lunch meals, the temple also sells vegetarian meals to take home. They're usually about $5 a container. They also sell drinks (not water because that it free) for $3-4 depending on the beverage. AND OF COURSE, like majority of temples, everything is CASH ONLY. They have Vietnamese classes every Sunday for the youth. The instructors teach Vietnamese. They have Buddhist worship in the mornings. I'm not sure about the cost for enrollment. MY RECOMMENDATION FOR PARKING: this place is very crowded and it's right in a residential area. You most likely won't find parking near the temple. You'll save time if you park a couple blocks away and walk. Overall, they have a really good structure going on. Better than the other temples I've visited. read more

I come here once in a while with my dad around 11am on Sunday's to pray and eat vegetarian food. It's quite crowded but the people working/volunteering there are nice and food is delicious! There are two lines, one for noodle soup dishes (my favorite) and another line for rice and entrees to go with the rice. At the end of the rice line, there's also usually fruit or donuts that serve as dessert. You can basically get as much food as you want just by going back in line. They sell desserts on the side (like tofu flower, rau ma, and Che). From the past few times I've been here, they always change up the food/dishes! We also always end up buying some vegetarian food to go as well. Don't forget to donate money because although the vegetarian meal served at the temple is free, they are all based on donations. read more

I pass by this temple when ever I visit a cousin of mine who live in the area .. Glad my nosy self decided to venture inside. You don't need to practice Buddhism and not just for Vietnamese people. The monks and sisters ( don't know if sisters is correct) are friendly, welcoming . From the front entrance it doesn't look like much parking space. Until I drive in further to the back lot. Parking lot does get full on weekends and one can park on the city streets. On weekends the Temple offer free vegetarian meals. The food choices change during the seasons depending on what's available at the time. At the end of the table there is a box for donations. You can choose to dine in under a covered tent. I saw a few people brought in their own plastic containers for to go . Cash only if you like to purchase vegetarian food prepared by the monks. Many selections are made with tofu and there are some pickled vegetables condiments. I bought tofu lemon grass so yumm. Stuffed tofu with minced mushrooms are my favorite great flavors . None vegan should at least give it a try , can't tell it's not meat and no! Does not taste like card board. LOL! Now when ever I am in town I stop by to purchase a few containers of different type of food I didn't try the last time and continue buying my favorites. This is my favorite temple, ever. I've been going here with my family since I was a little girl. Parking is ample and there are street parking in the local neighborhood. When my grandparents passed away, we always had the religious ceremony here. We always visit this temple around Lunar New Year/Tet and it is packed with people from all over So Cal. It is the only temple that generously offers delicious vegetarian food and they have lots of tables and chairs that welcomes you to join the temple in meals. The monks and volunteers here are very welcoming. It is very convenient for Vietnamese people from Long Beach to go here for temple on Sundays instead of having to drive down to the OC for all the other temples scattered around Garden Grove, Westminster areas. read more

It's a small Vietnamese Buddhist temple that my friend and I stumbled upon because we parked right next to it when we were going somewhere to eat. I'M SADDDD that we didn't go to the temple first because they sell food! I could see the tents sent up in the back with tables and a few people eating there wahhhhhh :(... BUT my friend and I went to the Kuan Yin statue. Took off our shoes to go onto the place mat and scavenged to find a lighter to light our incense and pray with. There were some school kids running on the side, and inside the temple were monks walking around doing a ritual. Different things going on in different sections of this small temple, but it was very peaceful and very lovely. read more

I've been coming to this temple for about two years now. This is a Vietnamese speaking temple! Came here first for my grandmother's altar funeral ceremony and I greatly enjoy how they run things. They do hold most if not all masses/ prayers/ etc in Vietnamese so if you do not understand, sometimes it is nice to observe and see how it is done. The head monk here is extremely humble and nice. Unlike all other monks I've seen, he is the first one that I have seen to help out in the kitchen serving people food and living a very frugal life. The food here is extremely tasty for being made soup kitchen style in bulk. You usually get to pick between soup or rice and the food is all you care to eat. DO NOT WASTE FOOD. That is the biggest no-no to get a bowl of food, only to leave more than half to throw away. I have seen other people eat someones leftovers because for Buddhist culture and more Asian cultures, its bad to waste. read more

I can honestly say that I am one of many that have visited Chua Phat To and end up coming every Sunday and at times even Saturday since 2009. I have visited many many temples in the past in an attempt to find a good place to mediate and further practice Buddhism, but to my surprise I was not able to find at temple that my family and I can associate with. We found Chua Phat To by accident just like most people and we are so grateful that we did. Chua Phat To is like one big family, everybody work cohesively as one under the direction of Thay Tinh. Chua Phat To has been known for great and delicious vegetarian food cook from scratch. I know because I am one of the many people that help prepare food every Sunday. Chua Phat To has all kinds of festivities all year long. When you do come, make sure you arrive early because the parking lot although plenty fills up very quickly. Since going to Chua Phat To my family and I are full pledge vegetarian, even our daughter of 8 years old. Hopefully one day you can visit Chua Phat To and experience what we have and hope you end up coming each week like we have been. Like many temples, this place is staffed by nearly all volunteers as far as I can tell. Recommend you add 15 mins to find parking because the area is congested. I always feel like I should help more whenever I'm there. It is the heart and soul of the people here that makes places like this special. Hope you will feel the same. yes, This is a good temple that i have never been . The monk is nice and has a good heart, everyone here is super nice, Nam Mo a Di Da Phat. They have food for everyone every Sat and Sun, even raining or sunshine or coldest day, they still serve food for everyone. with no money ask, but i think whoever come, able to have a little money or alot, please donation , not for the monk, but for the thankful that they have food for everybody, and help them for people who don't have money. i just move here a couple month, and now i back to my state, i don't know when i can come this temple again, i will miss the love from the temple, the monk, the nice people who cook, and the food. Their parking is too small to accommodate its member thus creating an enormous parking headache for people who live in the area. When I brought it up to an official of the church, they did not care about the problems they were causing the community and refused to do anything to alleviate the situation. IMO they should be required to get permits to hold their events and have designated parking lots with shuttles to solve the problem of parking. read more

Since I moved from San Fernando valley to northern part of Long Beach area I was told by my family about Chua Phat To and I'm glad that I did visit! I love this place! I don't have to drive to the OC to go to a VNese temple. I have been practicing Pure Land Buddhism for the majority of my life and I am a vegetarian (almost 8 yrs) so it is not easy for me to find vegetarian in my area until I paid a visit here-the food is amazing and everyone is so friendly. Not only i go here for prayer services I help out with the volunteer cooks :) i enjoy it very much! I find myself at peace when I go here. I am a non practicing Buddhist until August 2012 when I encountered Chua Phat To by accident. Within the last 3 months, I have found some profound self-discoveries and peace both at home and at work. I have been coming to temple every week end to do volunteer work (help preparing food to feed about 150 people who came to pray and some local homeless people) and they have been the most wonderful experienced I ever had. The more I am there, the more peaceful my mind became, and I am not a Buddhist fanatic by any imagination. Just a little praying, chanting, listen to live lectures and CDs, as well as practicing what I learned by observing people around me were just incredible. I want to mention that most people who come to temple/church because they have some personal issues like job, family, health, legal,etc.. I dont. I am very happy with my life. The temple serve food and pray 3 times on Saturday (8AM, 2PM and 6PM) and two times on Sunday (8AM and 2AM). Their food is famous and well know within the Vietnamese community as the cook is one of the senior monk there. There is no fee to eat, to pray, or to visit. The temple survive purely on charity but they never ask you for money. You may not believe me...yet, but so many people include me are willingly to give what we have because of the love of what we have learned, the wonderful people around us, and what these monks are teaching us. I just cant describe it here, it something you should come and see for yourself. It is a Vietnamese temple, it open for all ages and there are lot of young people here.
