The spicy Cream Corn was excellent, they weren't lying it has a spicy kick! Funny enough the best thing was the Cornbread. It was fantastic, some of the best I've had. The worst thing? The sauces. They all were not good at all. The most tolerable one is their regular sauce, still a c minus. The service was good, but I was asked how I was doing about a hundred times. I have heard of their food from friends and happened upon them at an event in St. Johns. They served up a full menu of brisket, burnt ends, pork, ribs, and chicken. They also had an apple slaw and loaded mashed potatoes, along with their signature sauces. It was all delicious. I had their meats taco-style, one chicken and one pork with slaw and a spicy crema (sour cream). The meat was so smoky with a robust flavor that wasn't salty. The slaw and cream amplified the flavors of the meat, and didn't distract from it. Before leaving, I picked up a plate of what was left, chicken and burnt ends. My partner ate some last night after the drive home, and I just finished some (24 hours later). The flavor is still spot on, and the meat is still tender. The owners of this BBQ joint seem to love what they do. They do it very well. I can't wait to track them down again.

I chose River House Grill this trip since it was a beautiful night, and on the water. While getting off the interstate and heading in to town, I noticed this eerie presence, nothing was open, signs were dark, stop lights not working... I got to River House and a few regulars were still milling around the bar, I was told they were closed due to a power outage throughout the entire city. After some conversation, they said if I had cash, I could still buy a beer (always carry cash!). The regulars moved on, and I was finishing my drink when the power comes back on! The owner Mike had already sent most of his staff home, as the estimated power restoration was well beyond their normal operating hours, but he said he would turn the fryers back on, and start the pizza oven since I was there. I told him he didn't have to and I would head back to East Lansing, but he insisted, at this point I was the only one in the place! Ordered a pizza, and boy was it delish! By the time my pizza had arrived, a few others had managed to come in and fill up the place! Thanks to Mike, Jen (bartender) and the staff who stayed!
