I had the beef brisket that had a subtle flavoring and then you dress it up with a sauce to your taste. The brisket was good, very tender. The pork and bean side was great, melt in your mouth pork that was more than expected in volume. The potato salad was middle of the road, good but not special. Service was good, order at the register and they deliver your food. Ended up with a spicy chicken which you would think would be their pulled chicken with a spicy sauce on top. It was literally chicken nuggets on a sandwich with fries and Mac and cheese which might as well been Kraft. Total price for my meal $23. Co-worker had pulled chicken that was cold. Yeah, next time we will head down to midtown brewing for a real meal for a cheaper price. Only good thing I have to say is that the fries were hot and the girl taking orders was a champ. Very disappointed. They changed the recipe* with mentioning it on the menu (an autistic's nightmare). They added ingredients I cannot eat (which could be a problem for those allergic). They tried remaking it, but I discovered still more changes that made it inedible. I went back again, this time for a refund. They didn't give me a receipt. They say I should get my money back in 3 - 5 days. Apparently, I'll have to trust them. All this and the cook appeared put out at remaking my order, and even more so giving a refund. At no time did they seem to want to make it right. *I used to get pulled-pork tacos, which were a basic Mexican style. Now it has a tomato pico and guacamole sauce between the taco shells. They are a good bbq pit. I use them as a standard bar for rating other restaurants to for bbq meals. Maybe it's the special flavors of their sauce or the one time I had a ghost pepper sauce from some other restaurant and remembered how awesome my first experience with it ( referring to the sauce and also my first time with the saddleback bbq order). I look forward to giving an unbiased review in exchange for their award willing food in the future. Know that this is an impromptu review without any compensation- and I did not eat there recently. Today was my first time at saddleback, and food here was absolutely phenomenal! The food and atmosphere closely resembled what I feel like I might see at a traditional southern bbq place down south maybe. The service was spot on and staff were so nice. When you drive up to this place the first thing you will think is "what a hole in the wall". It is in a part of Lansing called REO Town. (Near where the trucks where once made) Don't be fooled. This is some of the best BBQ I have ever had. Heck I didn't use any sauce. The meat was wonderful as it was. I had the beef brisket, my wife ordered pork (she skipped sauce as well) My brother in law and his wife got Caesar salads with meat. Meals came with jalapeño cornbread (mild enough that everyone at table loved it) and spicy pickles I also ordered the deviled eggs. ( I make great deviled eggs so I like to compare other ideas) This place is worth the trip to Lansing's REO Town. Visit some of the other shops as well. read more

Had my first Saddleback BBQ taste for lunch and it is a great disappointment for sure. I have no reference point to know if this is standard fare or if the quality has receded, but I don't understand the hype! For a nearly $30 lunch - the chicken is VERY dry and flavorless, the brisket is tough, and the pulled pork is pretty good. The sauces are puckery-sour, more distracting than enhancing, and difficult to distinguish b/w them. The potato salad tastes like a blend of potatoes and mustard; just another sour experience. The mac & cheese is flavorless and appears to be made with highly processed cheese akin to Velveta or boxed Kraft. I was looking forward to this meal but would not spend my money to repeat this experience. read more

This is the best of the locations, IMO. They often have various specials and items that do sell out. Yes, it's a hole in the wall set-up, but almost all of the best BBQ joints fit this mold. I really like their pulled pork, the ribs, their wings, and their chicken. I don't think their brisket is quite up to par, but brisket is really hard to pull off (it rarely has enough smoke, IMO). The sides here are solid and it's worth trying just about anything they have. I really like the pork rinds, the deviled eggs, and the mac and cheese. The polish sausage is solid as well! Best of all, Saddleback pays their employees well (minimum of $15/hour) and the employees are happy to serve you. It's hard to not support an organization that believes in paying their employees such a high minimum wage. read more

Really outstanding BBQ, a hidden gem. The brisket was probably the best I've ever had (and I've lived in Texas). Ribs were just as great and full of flavorful, tender, not overly fatty meat. No sauce needed, however all 3 sauces we tried were versatile and had great flavor profiles. Hubs really loved the potato salad and I thought the baked beans were great albeit super hearty. Had to knock off a star though for their deviled eggs. Ours were prepared very, VERY over seasoned and neither one of us could finish an egg halve. It seems like these are non-traditional deviled eggs prepared in a southwestern barbecue fashion. They just didn't sit right. TIP: order extra scoops of the corn mush concoction. Holy wow. Amazing management. Working hard to be available to the public in a very difficult time as well as promote other small businesses. Provided lunches to school kids and first responders. Another outstanding lunch and visit to Saddleback yesterday. This trip had a little extra value, though. Wonderful and informative customer service. Thank you Rachel! I had lots of questions about the meat, wood used, rub and other random things. Rachel took the time to talk it through and was very helpful, professional and polite! What a nice experience. We took the chicken & brisket sandwiches back to office for our working lunch. Some chicken tacos, too. Very good. Although the smoke wasn't coming through as much with these items, they were still very good. I think I just require a tad more on the smokey scale. Sides were really tasty. I especially enjoyed the backed beans with meat. That could be a meal in itself. What a great compliment to the smoked meat. Also, the mac n cheese is very good. Add diced jalapenos or something else to the mac n cheese for some flare? Stop by to say hello to Rachel and enjoy a true bbq gem just south of downtown. 5* effort and product. Best Thing I Ever Ate List: Ribs This is one of the best BBQ joints I've been to in a long time. My husband shared an order of brisket, a 1/2 slab of ribs, a side of pork rinds, and a side of mac and cheese. First the brisket - It was nicely smoked, sliced thick, and so juicy and tender. In other words, this beef was nearly perfect in my book. The ribs had a deliciously spiced rub that translated into a delectable bark. I was thoroughly impressed with the ring of smoke evident on these ribs. They were pink just about all the way through, but were tender and moist. These ribs made it on to my list, "The Best Thing I Ever Ate!" As much as I liked the brisket and ribs, they weren't my favorite. That honor went to the pork rinds, which were housemade. Their indescribably light texture was complemented by the spices sprinkled on them. The macaroni and cheese was good, but didn't reach the level of the other items we ordered. I would order a different choice next time. Maybe I would order more corncakes. The brisket and ribs each came with a small corncake, but I could have eaten way more of this sweet/savory treat. Barbecue is Lansing's thing. I'm only giving Saddleback 4 stars because they're unfortunate enough to be situated in the same city as Meat- the absolute best barbecue I've ever had. Saddleback does a great job of cooking their meats, and their sauces are pretty on point. The sides can be a little lacking. There aren't many varieties and they're kind of bland in flavor. I usually just get a plate of meat and then their coleslaw. However, their little corn cakes and pickles that come complementary are SO GOOD. There's not much seating here, but you can ask them to deliver it next door to Reotown Pub, which is another Lansing treasure. It's a pretty winning combination. read more

Pork was great and so were all the sauces. I ordered through Grunhub so my food was cold by the time I got it. The deviled eggs were also delicious as well. Overall food was great but pricy for the portion sizes. You need to figure out a better to-go packaging for the deviled eggs as they slid all over in the container and I had to scrap up the filling and place it back in the eggs. read more

Visited 7/15 for dinner. It was not good. Ordered 1/3lb brisket moist (received lean), 1/3lb pulled pork, and baby back ribs. The brisket had no flavor and was tough. Ribs were mediocre at best. Most of the rib meat stuck to the bone and was rather tough but still "sweet" (as rib meat often is). The pulled pork, I wouldn't feed it to my dog. Terrible. It had the texture of pine needles and tasted like month old leftovers. The owner (or manager, I can't tell but he was the one ordering people around though) was loud (so loud he could be heard over the other patrons talking) and oddly confident for someone with such terrible BBQ. I cannot stress how poor this BBQ is. Really really bad. I would have asked for money but I was hungry, had work to do and didn't need an awkward conversation with the loud guy at the register. read more
