I had contacted this fantastic High Country Lodge whilst at lunch and secured a room for the night. I'm so glad--what a perfect interior place for me. The excellent/small room had everything I needed. to spend the night; a firm mattress/flat screen TV with easy-to-use remote/mini-fridge/microwave and, most important, an electrical outlet to re-charge the eBatteries on my "FrankenBike". I was so very pleased, and I know it would be equally satisfying for any solo traveller. The High Mountain Lodge definitely has my coveted "¡Wheel of Approval!"

I was heading south and didn't really need a bathroom break but I thought stretching legs and soaking up the dessert in the area seemed like a great idea. There was only 1 other car on this side of the highway so I almost had the area to my self. It was a nice view out the front side. I could look across to the sister location on the other side of the road and see the people milling about over there. I walked around back and saw the dessert quite flat there. It went to the infinity of the horizon. I had to take a couple pictures. It was a peaceful spot considering it wasn't too far off the highway. I didn't stay for too long, but it was a welcome spot in the middle of no where to shake off the road dust.

It's easy driving to the Reserve. And best of all, it's in a historic little town with a lot of atmosphere. The house was built in 1880 and in its time was one of the largest Victorian style farm houses in the area. We stayed in the largest room, the Heron Room. The advantage of this room is that it is enormous and has a huge bathroom with shower, tub and spa. You will want to have an extra chair to perch on for use of the wi-fi. You may also want to bring in your folding camp chair for an easy reading place or use the living room. Phoebe prepares a healthy breakfast of choices, yogurt, eggs, fruit, etc. The B&B is seasonal, check the calendar. It's available October through April.

So, it's a great rest stop! It seems like the buildings are something you can rent out? They're all numbered... and it's like a picnic/gathering area. But, I'm still confused on these "dunes" and what there really was to offer at this stop, aside from the fortress type area & very convenient bathrooms. Parking is plentiful. There are signs that ask no pets- seems no one obliges because several had their dogs out walking them/letting them crap. Watch where you step! You can walk up to the platform area and down the steps to the back of it. Supposedly that is where the "dunes" are? You can't see anything over the hill. And, it's fenced off. All you really get here is the wooden structure, a nice restroom facility (quite clean & also a handicap accessible facility), and the plaque/signs. Otherwise- I don't see the appeal or point of stopping. I did notice there is the same exit/facility on the opposite side of the freeway... maybe the actual "dunes" are over there? Not sure I'd suggest this as a "must stop and see", but it's also about 45 minutes outside the city, so if you are passing through, I guess it's kind of cool to check out.

They buy bags of ice and keep it in a small freezer in the lobby. There is absolutely no wifi signal. The lady at the front desk was very nice and talked the owner (Mr. Hitesh) every day to fix the wifi problem. Every day he claimed he fixed it but it never worked. The owner would never speak to me directly to try to resolve the problem and when I asked for a small refund to compensate for no wifi, I heard crickets. I was actually sad every time I drove by so many better motels to get to the one I was staying at. There was no way to get out of my reservation without taking a huge $$ hit so I just couldn't wait to get out of there. Mr. Hitesh answers complaints on Yelp after the fact but he won't do anything while you're there. Whatever Mr. Hitesh replies to any review, don't believe him. 2 stars 'cuz the bed comfort wasn't horrible and the sheets were clean.

Dos Casitas is charming and comfortable, with a great bed (always a priority for me) and lots of sweet extras, like little jars of owner Judy Kurtz's homemade apricot jam for us to take home. She brought us a coffee and light breakfast tray in the evening so we could have something in our stomachs when we left for the bosque at 6:15 a.m., and then made us a real breakfast when we returned a few hours later. Breakfast with other guests and Judy's expertise on the area were a lively addition. It's so wonderful to have these human encounters when traveling, as opposed to the sterility of a hotel! Thanks, Judy, we'll be back!
