Have been going to Churchills since the late 90s, considered it home away from home through my youth and 20s. Today I posted a comment on their IG about their terrible bathrooms. Last time I was there, they flooded all the way to the bar on the inside and the entire back are was so flooded they had to open another exit. They also never have any hand soap or toilet paper. Today Churchills pub, decided it would be best to DELETE my comment than to address a real issue at their business with a long time customer. I love a good dive bar. To be an authentic good dive bar, said establishment must fulfill the following criteria: * doorman, after some cajoling, letws you in without either the "secret password" or paying the cover ("we just want a drink...we won't stay for the burlesque show...honest!) *latino biker guy offers you his barstool as soon as you walk up to the bar. He is covered in prison tats but impeccably polite *beer is frosty and cheap *there's a mix of skinny hipster guys growing their first rather comical beard, spaced-out Jamaican guys playing pool, cool friendly girls in all shapes, sizes, colors (not only the ponytail-blonde one-size-fits-all Hollywood screamers), and the above-mentioned bikers *the dj plays a good mix of the Smiths, a-ha, the Cure, and other 80s staples. It would have been great if he threw in some psychobilly and speed metal, but you can't have everything. Churchill's fulfilled all these criteria and more. Easy parking, great people watching, and the potential for a rumble. Friendly bartenders give the place an extra boost. Ladies, in the interest of full disclosure: I didn't try the restroom but I'm thinking it's not five star material. Crouching over the toilet is very good for your quads, though, so there is a silver lining even to that little wrinkle. read more

In this affected, showy, glitzy, ever-morphing sprawl of a city, you have to be thankful for a place like Churchill's, the ultimate anti-Miami. Yes, it's grimy, it's smelly, it's loud, and it's really not in the safest part of town. It features, even after some semblance of a renovation and the addition of an extra women's stall, the dirtiest bathrooms known to man. And after a long night in its bowels (sticking with the toilet theme, sorry), in a drunken 4 a.m. stupor, you'll want nothing more than to run home and dive into your shower to wash off its particular smoky, greasy funk -- after paying the "parking attendants" (sketchy locals) a second time for supposedly watching your car in the otherwise free lot. All negatives aside, for lovers of the colorful neighborhood dive, Churchill's couldn't get any better. It has an undeniable, rascally charm, from the ancient double-decker bus in the parking lot, to the caricature of Sir Winston himself glowering on the wall above the entrance, to the makeshift stage and well-worn bar and occasional jar of Frankenstein pickled eggs. Churchill's is also the most generous patron of local bands in Miami, hands-down. Through the years, the pub has played host and home base to scrappy punk bands, experimental and noise acts like the Laundry Room Squelchers, and homegrown festivals like Hialeah Fest and Night of the Weirds. It's also a venue for lesser-known and outright oddball out-of-town acts like Quintron & Miss Pussycat (back again in November) and Scott Biram. I'm not entirely sure how the booking aspect works, but if you've got an instrument and a hankering to play for a small crowd, I can nearly guarantee Churchill's won't turn you down. The crowd is almost the best part of the place. On any given night, you'll find tattooed and leather-encased punks, Design District types, loyal old-time patrons, soccer fans (there's always a soccer match playing on the bar tvs), indie kids, and bewildered neighborhood residents all mingling together. People hanging out here are unfailingly good-natured and welcoming, from the crowd to the bartenders. And why wouldn't they be? The drinks are cheap, the music is always entertaining (if not always great), the peoplewatching (and conversation) is way better than on Lincoln Road, and the atmosphere is completely unpretentious. All of this has remained fairly constant for the past 30 years, which is pretty amazing in a town where businesses simultaneously open and close and reinvent, a town of chameleons. So thanks to Churchill's for keeping Miami a little more sane, and for keeping it real. read more

I'm a Miami native and last night was my first experience with Churchill's. Before arriving, my host-friend warned that I was bound to meet some characters. Let's review what my night consisted of: Several interactions with 1) a man with a getup suitable for the Renaissance Fair 2) a couch surfing, hedonistic trust fund baby 3) an all-female band whose lyrics included "let your titties hang free" 4) a dude using a pitcher as a mug 5) a brigade of neon-legging wearing Christmas carolers who barraged the bar and booty danced to Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer....only to be ushered out by the trust funder with the threat of a fire extinguisher shower. Bass and Harp on tap, fruit pastiles direct from London, and Indian curry. I love this place. read more

It didn't occur to me until after I had walked in to Jazz night at Churchill's on Mondays, exactly what my life had been missing up until this point. Ends up, it's Monday nights at Churchill's. If jazz isn't your thing, go any other night where it will be similarly low key and good for people-watching or mulling over a brew. Or, you could STILL go on jazz night and experience the glory of Chuchill's Spoken Word on the patio outside. Last week when I was there, it ranged from some pretty red haired chick hypnotically chanting to a ukelele master, to an Emo-singing rocker with a Mac-produced backtrack. The sky is the limit, man. And as a native Californian, I am just damn happy to see creativity flourishing out here. Free art, creation, revolution, all that in spirit, can be found in Miami at last! At Churchill's, on Mondays. For music, it's a perfectly small venue with plenty of space for bigger shows, and plenty of chairs and tables for a very good small-venue experience. Otherwise, it is a mellow bar in a shady section of town. Go on one of the more poppin' nights though, you won't regret it, and don't forget your pack of cigarettes. Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said?!? I've been going to Churchills to see shows since I was in highschool. We're talking at least for the last 13 years.... My older brother and his friends used to see shows here too! This place has been around forever. The surrounding neighborhood has always been questionable, but never fear, because there's usually someone watching the cars... I've often paid the local friendly (?) bums a few bucks just to keep an eye out! :) Churchills is not your typical dive bar, or live music venue. It's unique, adventurous, open minded, filthy, grimy, and filled with love...of music! I have been to many different type of shows/events here over the years. From hardcore punk shows, to def poetry jam-type gatherings, I've seen every kind of person in Miami here. They even serve food! Yes, they do and its actually good! I always get the chicken fingers and fries. Can't go wrong! ;-) The best part about Churchills is they don't discriminate or prejudge you. It doesn't matter what you show up wearing, you'll be accepted into the crowd and invited to have a great time. And pretty much anytime you come here, you'll have a good time. And yes, the bathrooms get progressively worse throughout the night, so make sure you are prepared to tip toe over water, and hold your breath throughout your bathroom adventure! Indont believe there is a way to review this place. One of a kind... There is nothing like Churchill's. It is legendary among those in Miami who do not like anything about Miami. Because it is nothing like Miami. I highly suggest you visit on Monday -Jazz Night or Tuesday I believe it is open mic night. Regardless it is a journey on any given day. The local crowd (no touritas por favor) will welcome you or most likely ignore you but don't worry you will feel very comfortable pretty soon... The bartenders are one of a kind. I don't like Churchill's. I never have, and I have been here enough times to properly predict, I never will. This is a small, local, long standing bar. It is the kind of place where you'd think everyone would know your name, but I've never seen the same bar tender there twice, so don't expect anyone to salute you by name upon entering. The place is super smokey, dirty, in a bad neighborhood, has no parking, bad audio system, and the drunk guys are overly obnoxious. But anyway you look at it, you can't really beat $4 for a vodka tonic, $13 for two specialty vodka mixed drinks, and beers under $5. I've stated in other reviews that I don't like bars, but I am open-minded and I believe I give a fair review when I do go... and regardless how much others like this place, I just don't. They have jazz nights and open-mike nights; I haven't been to either, and considering there aren't many places with those offerings in Miami it is keeping this place above one star. But I just don't see me coming to Churchill's to enjoy a nice glass of wine while listening to jazz. * If you go - bring cash, b/c you'll have to pay all 20 homeless people who volunteered to watch your car, they will stand behind your car as you try to back up or yell "bottle bottle" and offer to "save you" from a flat tire - hmmm - yup, don't like it! read more

ok...this place is losing their potential cool points because they haven't yet figured out their parking system - why must we get harassed by the neighborhood thugs to park on the street? A city that doesn't have at least one grungy, artsy punk rock bar is no city at all. Miami is great and all, but without Churchills, it would be no better than Plano, Texas. I am just mildly kidding. I lived in Plano once. Lance Armstrong grew up there and I heard he got his start in biking by trying to peddle as far away from there as possible. Gone are the velvet ropes in South Beach. Here, you have to pass through a glass enclosure and ring the doorbell so the bartender can asses that you are not a crack addict looking for free shit, then he or she buzzes the door to let you in. Punks, skinheads, rude boys, emo kids, goth grannies, Brits, rastafarians, butches, soccer nuts, all are welcome here. THIS is a classic punk joint. It reminds me of the Middle East Cafe in Boston because it is a strong advocate for live music of all sorts. Beer is great, and really, the food ain't bad either. I've had a Guinness Beef stew that was great a few years back. The bathrooms are a nightmare. Wear boots! But, you wore boots anyway right? You don't come to a punk joint in flip-flops, you silly hippy. The owner, Dave, is a nice chap, the bartenders are awesome, the scenery is crazy and grungy, and the people watching is phenomenal. This place is in Little Haiti. I have friends who are Miami locals that are afraid of coming here. But the folks at Churchills are always alert and they watch the parking lot during shows. But that said, don't leave your Macbook, iPhone and Garmin on your Mini-Cooper dash, you silly yuppie. Churchills has a great art show once a year, and I've shown my own paintings here and made some good contacts because of it. I've finally had a go at this place after hearing the hype about this bar for over a year. We were confronted by a bloke whom you pay to watch your car to make sure the hubcaps aren't stolen. We gladly paid the guy and parked. We were charged $8 cover to get in this place. BIG turnoff. This bar is a dive, what am I paying for? The band that was playing was shit! And its labeled an English pub, but resembles nothing of an England pub outside of the double decker bus in the parking lot. They do sell British products for extortionate prices. Cheaper to get my British goods at the brit section at publix. And they didn't sell Hula Hoops which they would do if they were a proper british pub! ha ha All and all, this wasn't a bad place to hang out. I think I was just peeved that we dropped $25 before we even ordered our first beer just to get into the door with the car watcher and entrance fee. read more

I already miss the old Churchills. They USED to have the best fish and chips in the city and now it's mediocre at best. And what's up with the 1998 cutesy stainless steel tray you're serving it in? Churchill's is quintecentially what a punk rock english pub should be. It's dingy, dark, filthy, quirky, in one of the sketchiest locations in FL... and I love it. The attitude, fun, and personality you find here are inversely proportional to the pretentiousness. (there is none) Go however you want, BE however you want, and so will everyone else. My friends were dressed up, having come from a nice restaurant, and the guy next to us was drinking his beer directly from the pitcher (yeah, I saw this too). You are bound to see some characters. Note: props to the bartender and doorman. Some drunk guy was getting too gropy with a friend of mine, and was swiftly and quietly escorted out. The music definitely has it's moments, particularly when there is a local band onstage. They're dirty too. And is just as rockin when the best jukebox in SoFla is on. open mike is always interesting, and from time to time they'll put up a canvas that the entire crowd can get in on painting. Monday night's Jazz jam is something to check out too! The beer is flowing, the whiskey is cheap (as well as everything else), and the times are good. Yes this is an old watering hole that has plenty of history under it's roof. I went last Saturday to see a show, Trick Daddy to be exact. The drinks are decently priced and bartenders are quick. What I don't like about Churchills is them hosting events in their tiny space inside. It gets ridiculously packed and there are only 2 bathroom stalls that are nasty. I think Churchill's should be left alone as a pub not an event destination. There is also an outdoor area which is more spacious than indoors. read more

I live two blocks away from this place, had never been. At the persistence of one of my friends who performs there on the regular, I finally made the time to stop by this evening. I bartend myself, and brought two of my friends in the biz along. I was craving Canadian whiskey, so I asked for a Washington Apple as a drink, fully aware that this is a dive and perhaps they wouldn't have apple liqueur. In such case, no biggie, I could find a different way to drink it or even an entirely different spirit if they didn't even have Canadian. She responded with a bad attitude "I can't make it". To her lack of providing further details of why she couldn't make it, I inquired directly for the spirit "You don't have Crown Royal?". She responds with a very poignant "No" and nothing else. Umm, I am still very much left up in the air with those answers. I can't order if she isn't providing details and/or options, while making me feel like I am such a nuisance. She is now staring at me like "Are you going to order or what?". So I ask "Which Canadian Whiskey do you have?" She, very angrily and aggressively pulled out Bushmills, Jack Daniels, Jameson and Black Label from her well, and sat them on the bar. This was extremely condescending and insulting, as none of them were what I inquired about, nor the way to answer if she didn't have any. I was being addressed like I was an idiot who didn't know what they had ordered. What would you have done at this point? I could only respond with the obvious and told her "They are not Canadian" Very angrily she responded "I don't have Canadian!!!!" - Gee, finally a straight answer. Wouldn't it have been easier to just say that from the beginning? No need for the theatricals, condescension and insulting behavior. She put the bottles back and just rushed away. She came back and I asked her to come close to me and I whispered in her ear "You could just have told me you don't have Canadian whiskey and I would have ordered something else". She didn't respond and in a mock way proceeded to point out at their whiskey selection and said in a very patronizing tone "This is what I've got, want any of it? No? Okaaaay!!!" And she walked away. I then spoke to the manager on duty which didn't seem that concerned. My two friends told me that she laughed at me when she saw me complaining to the manager. All three of us can't understand why I got such attitude. Part of what I told the manager was that we had planned on staying there until they closed and if our experience was good and given how close I live, we could have become regulars, as well as send them business. Plus, we tip more than the average person and are more understanding because we work in this industry. I didn't even see her laughing at me. oh Good old Churchills....it's been awhile since I had visited..prob around 10 yrs...but it really hasn't changed much. Is still sketchy...kinda dirty...BUT...I do love it. Grimey, seedy, cheap. These are all the adjectives I use to describe the kinds of bars & pubs I favor over others. Churchills pretty much qualifies and wins this category. Located in the heart of Little Haiti, where parking will definitely cost you a dollar, with a high possibility of your car being guarded by the resident local, who may or may not be a drug dealer, Churchills is a landmark. But see, that's the charm of Churchills. You might get your car broken into. It's a gamble. But when you're drunk, you forget about the seediness outside and just enjoy the company of your mates inside. It's got a lot of history, and it's essentially a living museum of live punk, garage, metal, folk, etc. If you're coming through Miami, you should definitely check it out. Good local shows and there will be at least 4-5 occasions per month where a non-local/heard-of band will come through. Churchills is your catch-all hangout pub. I don't know how things are in Miami, but in Denver, Detroit, and NYC, these kinds of bars are a dying breed. They're in such scarcity that yea, you even start to get nostalgic for piss covered bathrooms, marked with years and years of youth-scrawled messages. You miss the cheap beer and the scowlly bartenders. You miss rowdy shows and a complete lack of showmanship by audience, staff, and musicians alike. Two pool tables should you want to conjure your inner shark. Two venues (there's the main stage and then a smaller green room in the very back). A patio which has a great, strange, concrete graffitied space vaguely reminiscent of your schoolyard basketball court. The night we were in we missed the main stage performance but there was an emcee and DJ (can you call them dj's when there's no longer vinyl? Is he a producer? All around music man?) putting on a tiny but hype show in the back. So many niches in the building where you can turn up or turn down depending on your mood. I also like that this venue spans all genres. A bona fide postmodern punk space. read more

This place is one of those quirky gems that make my life in Miami a bit better. They have all kinds of bands from indie to hardcore to the outright bizarre. Its also one of the few places in Miami where you can hear great live jazz. Its also next to Sweat, a fantastic record store and has pool tables, a double decker parked in front, a cigarette machine and pacman. Its a pretty crazy place and it also hosts all kinds of events. Ive seen jazz, glass blowers, local bands and of course, the one and only, Nicolas the Storyteller. This is my favorite part of the place. Nicolas just stands on the stage in the back and recites stories. Its one of those rare pleasures you can't really find anywhere else. Everyone likes a story, and nothing beats kicking back with a pitcher and listening to Nicolas tell the story of "Molly the furry chicken". Its not neat, its not pretty, but its real and its a great time. read more

I have been here a handful of times, normally with my buddy's band when they were playing. It's a nice small venue; it was awesome for Michael Graves there, but normally it is just a great place to see local bands that don't suck. Only down side is the neighborhood is a bit on the crappy side, but as long as you don't stray too far you shouldn't have any problems. read more

When you are trying to mix it up and check out a different scene, listen to some pretty good local music and drink some cheap ($3) beer PLEASE check out Churchill's. Yes, it's not in the best neighborhood, and yes, the place is really grimy. But you'll find some awesome people here and some really good music. Their Nirvana tribute night is lively, and their David Bowie night was awesome. So many characters in Churchill's. My only negative is that the bathrooms are on some next level dirty. Loved this place! Not your average dive bar! Awesome atmosphere! The artwork in this place is unreal! Food was delicious! Excellent service. Very trendy! Not a place on the planet like it! This place was pretty cool. They have great drink prices, and a great selection of liquor and beer, i got my Guiness in a real glass which was nice. Churchills is unlike any other bar in Miami. It is kinda dirty, in a kinda bad neighborhood and kinda awesome. The first time I went there I was definitely intimidated by the gritty locals. I felt way to preppy to even step foot in there. Not to mention I was worried about my car parked on a near by street. But once I got a pint in me and just relaxed I realized Churchills is the kind of place you have to let it be what it is, and just make a good time out of it. So since then I have ventured to this English Pub a number of different occasions. Highlights: Monday- Jazz Jam! Even if you are a jazz neophyte, this is fun. With a mix of local musicians jamming and playing of notable jazz vinyl in between sets you are assured a great musical experience. I went with a handful of friends and we were able to have some drinks, catch up without being overwhelmed by loud music. The ambiance is different than other nights. Wednesday- Brings you a combination of the Circus in the back, which is fun local music and dancing. The kind of crowd who does not give a fuck and just wants to have fun. Inside you will find Open Mic Night which is always interesting. People put their fears aside to get up and preform in front of a laid back crowd. Weekends: Check the website for the calendar because there are always shows, with tons of bands going on. But make sure not to take the bands at their name. I ended up at Metal-fest one night with in a crowd in which i clearly did not belong. So just check who exactly is playing before venturing. Don't dress up. Don't have an attitude. Just go to have fun, because it is a laid back no frills pub in Miami, which is a rarity. read more

It ain't pretty, but Churchill's isn't trying to be. Stiff drinks, stage diving, and good times all around. This is a tried and true dive bar (with the restrooms to match) that happens to have a nice roomy area for enjoying live music. I've seen way too many metal, punk and hardcore shows over the years here to count. The parking isn't the greatest, but it's workable. I really enjoy the fact that you don't get hassled about re-entry at this place during shows. Speaking of shows, the vibe of this place really makes for some really fun, personal and energetic live performances. Upon arriving, we were greeted by kind gentlemen that obviously didn't work for Churchill's but were just friendly people from the local hood suggesting places for us to park our car. How kind of them I thought, they even went out of their way to steal some orange vests so they look fully official. I realized parking where they were pointing was probably a bad idea when another gentleman in an orange vest rode by on a bike holding a large pair of hedge clippers in his hand. I mean he could have been out doing a little night gardening, but from the look in his eyes, I don't believe this was the case. So we opted to park on the main street underneath a large street light. Once I entered the club I was delighted to find that the live music section was on the other side of the bar, so if I wasn't interested in moshing that night, I didn't have to and could simply sit at the bar and view the band through the open space, or watch tv if what was on interested me. Then I found out there was a secondary stage set up in the back patio area. While walking back there I noticed a very skinny man standing at the back gate looking at the concert goers as if they had a meal ticket that he believed was his. The back patio was set up with vegan snacks and other non delicious delights. I chose not to indulge in non enjoyment that night. (opted to walk to Dunkin Donuts down the block, that's another story though.) As all nights out go, you end up wanting to use the restroom at some point, the great thing here is they have one on each side of the bar for men, neither of which is more disgusting than the next. Luckily one of them you can somewhat walk into without touching pretty much anything. The sound in there was great, all the bands sounded awesome, maybe because the size of the room was just right in which they played. My only gripe would be the pole in the middle of the room that would disrupt my mosh abilities if I was so inclined to "set it off" if you will. Other than the neighborhood being filled with people that would most likely chop your entire arm off just to steal your watch, this place is great. read more

As much as i always feel like i need an immediate bath after leaving this place, you truly always have to love it. There's always someone to talk to that isn't such a jerk. There is always a local band that makes your ears bleed followed by something worth hearing. Though their beer selection has not changed since i came out of the womb thus far is has always been cold, and you will always always leave with a good story. its definitely worth parking in the middle of over-town, getting approached by many a crack junky for money, and paying a silly entrance fee. Because at the end of the night you have a dozen new friends the bartender knows ur name and you car is more than likely still there in decent conditions. read more

This place was more than a little Haiti institution..it was a rite of passage to being an angry teenager and piling up next to 400 ( or whatever the occupancy limit is in the City of Miami in this building) other sweaty sobaco Bebe kids to watch shows and shoot the shitake. I've only been here once since the change of ownership and quite frankly I think I'll want to keep my distance for a bit to not tarnish the beautiful image of angst ridden teen years, stiff drinks and "wtf did I do?"hangover mornings... Unless I get enticed by a great show? Or if I feel like being that kind of nasty and want to ponder about my choices in life where the old putrid bathroom once was. Lord knows I've held up a few vomit fountains and swatted some cucarachas from that lovable hell hole and I regretfully inform you that this flawfree cesspool is... cleaner. I liken what Churchills meant to dive bars as a grossly important and crudely necessary thing to experience and relish in. Just as if you were happily taking your first bite of triumph outside the courthouse on one of those god awful hotdogs (... But they have to be kosher lol) as a celebratory meal after a cop fails to show up and have that $300 ticket dismissed. It's the tribute you pay to the gods of cheap thrills, being a little grungy and simply not giving a hoot because you march to your own beat.
