We visited Charleston in February 2021, between the 11th and the 15th. During our visit, we were lucky enough to encounter Deidre Garrard and her business partner at the Historic Charleston City Market. I'm a history teacher, and when I teach early American history one of the topics I cover is tobacco and how this southern-grown plant saved our first successful colony: Jamestown. I've always wanted to have a REAL tobacco leaf to show my students, to help them understand the lesson. The ladies of Cigar Row were willing to sell me a few tobacco leaves (which they typically use to roll cigars). They taught me how to maintain the leaves on the airplane flight back home, and basically just provided exceptional customer service! When I arrived back at school, I was able to run the leaves through a laminator to preserve them, and I'll use them in class for years to come! While in Charleston, I never did sample one of their cigars, but I can assure you that these ladies really do care about their product and will go out of their way to provide truly exceptional customer service! read more
