61st Street Fishing Pier

The 61st pier it's the first thing most people see when they reach the seawall…read more "The pier" is a hidden gem in plain sight. Whether you want to go fishing or just go up to the top deck and have a cold beer this pier is the ticket. It has been beat up pretty bad over the years by the hurricanes and most of the peers in Galveston have long been washed away. This one is hanging on by a thread. The top deck is $2 per person. They have a nice bar with great view of the Galveston Island and the Gulf.

My girlfriend, her son, and I have visited your pier every year for the past four years. During each trip, we spend eight or more hours a day fishing. We have always had positive experiences with Mike and the other staff members, which is why we continue to return, spend money at the pier, and recommend it to others. On the evening of 06/13/2026, at approximately 7:15 p.m., my girlfriend and I went inside to order a pizza before heading to the beach. After placing our order, we were instructed to wait upstairs. As we were preparing to sit down, a man immediately approached us regarding my backpack cooler. I had just removed the cooler from my back when he informed me it was not allowed. We explained that we were unaware of the policy and had only come upstairs because we had been directed to wait there for our food. He did not identify himself or explain his role. He stated that if there was no alcohol in the cooler, it would be fine. Wanting to be honest, I informed him there was alcohol inside. At that point, he grabbed my bag and said he would hold it. I asked if I could retrieve my wallet first. After asking twice, I was told to stop being rude. I explained that I felt the way he had approached us was unnecessarily aggressive. My girlfriend attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the interaction continued to become more confrontational. We ultimately chose to return downstairs and wait for our food. A woman who identified herself as the General Manager then approached us and stated that we had been rude to the bartender. Rather than attempting to understand the situation or de-escalate it, she immediately became defensive and repeatedly threatened to make us leave. When I questioned whether she felt her approach to customers was appropriate, she continued to insist that we were at fault and needed to "learn how to read." My girlfriend made multiple attempts to calmly explain that this was simply a misunderstanding and that we had not intentionally violated any rules. Unfortunately, she was repeatedly interrupted, spoken over, and dismissed. Even after asking us to follow her outside to review the posted signage, the conversation remained condescending and unprofessional. I would like to add a young man and woman staffed within the store were both present during this. And immediately apologized for the interaction. To be clear, this complaint is not about the policy itself. I fully understand the importance of following alcohol regulations and protecting your business from potential licensing issues. Had the policy simply been explained to us respectfully, there would have been no issue. The problem was the manner in which we were treated. What should have been a simple conversation about a misunderstanding escalated into an unnecessarily hostile interaction. Rather than helping resolve the situation, both the bartender and General Manager appeared to escalate it further. As longtime patrons who have supported this business for years, we left feeling disrespected, belittled, and unwelcome. That was disappointing, especially given the positive experiences we have had at your establishment in the past. I would appreciate this matter being reviewed, as the behavior displayed by management on this occasion fell far below the level of professionalism I would expect from a business that values its customers.

My family recently booked a fishing trip with Just Cast Charters, and unfortunately it was one of…read morethe most disappointing experiences we've had. We specifically paid for a jetty fishing trip, but we never actually went to the jetties. Instead, we were taken to a bay bridge where the fishing was very slow and we didn't catch anything of any significant size. After some time, the guide asked if we wanted to try shark fishing. Since none of us had experience with it and my 5-year-old son was incredibly excited by the idea, we agreed. What nobody explained was that this would involve nearly two hours of simply sitting and watching lines in the water. There was no casting, no holding poles, and very little actual fishing. We were essentially sitting still, hoping something would happen. Looking back, I wish I had spoken up, but I trusted the guide's judgment and assumed there was a plan. Even after an hour with no action, we stayed in the same spot. I felt that a good guide should have recognized the situation and adjusted the approach rather than letting so much of a four-hour charter pass without giving us opportunities to actively fish. The most heartbreaking part was seeing how disappointed my family was. This trip included my dad, mom, husband, and young son, and we were all looking forward to making memories together. Coming back empty-handed was tough, especially after spending so much of the trip inactive. To make matters worse, when we returned to the dock, another boat that had been out on a similar four-hour charter came back with more than 10 large fish. Seeing that made me wonder what had gone wrong with our trip and why our experience was so different. I was also uncomfortable that our captain smoked while on board. Overall, I felt misled about what we had paid for and how our time would be spent. The experience left me feeling crushed and disappointed, especially for my son, who had been so excited for the trip. Based on our experience, I would not recommend Just Cast Charters. I'm sharing this review in hopes that other families can make an informed decision when choosing a charter.

Some people in our group had gone before and they recommended showing up at 0530 to get checked in, and make sure we were one of the first people in line to get a prime table in the inside cabin of the boat. Just fyi there's only so much space indoors, if you're late, you'll most likely be sitting on the outside deck where's it's definitely hot during the summer. We went during the end of July and from what I've heard this is prime RED SNAPPER season. Just know that federal law limits red snapper to 2 per person with a minimum length of 16" to keep it. Other fish, for the most part are unlimited depending on their size and type of fish you catch, like vermilion snapper for example. As far as the experience goes, expect a 4 hr boat ride out to sea, 4 hrs of fishing, then 4 hr boat ride back to Galveston. This is a full day event. They let you bring food and non alcoholic drinks on board as long as you use a small soft cooler or backpack only. No big hard coolers or alcohol allowed. Luckily they also have a grill onboard with a variety of snacks, burgers, hot dogs, quesadillas, drinks, and beer for sale. That double bacon cheeseburger was SO GOOD! After you get back to Galveston, there are guys waiting to clean/filet your fish for a small price if you want as well. Enjoy, I'll definitely be back again!
