Christy Mathewson was also one of the first five inductees into the Baseball Hall Of Fame. He is this tiny town in NEPA (northeastern PA) prized hero. Each year the community honors him by hosting this sweet little race. It's truly lovely to see the community come together. It's a long standing tradition for many families in the area including my husband's. Everyone cheers everyone on at the finish line and everyone know everyone. That's the mailman, that's the UPS driver, that lady works at Ray's Market and so on. Coming from Philly I just love this small town love and pride you get up here. There is a 1 mile kids race which takes place before the adult race although many teens run the 6k. The race course is through downtown Factoryville and through Christy Mathewson Park, on a bridge over a creek and around the baseball field. There is a huge complimentary town breakfast served either under tents on the grass outside the college or on exceptionally hot days, in the college cafeteria after the race where the medals are awarded to the top three runners in each category. It's a sweet tradition. If you live in the area you probably know about it and know someone who runs it. If not, and you're traveling through, stop by, it's just the cutest. You can just sign up that morning for just $22. It starts at 8:30am.
