I sticked with ONE instructor the whole time because he is amazing and his name is LOUIS. HE'S THE BEST. He's not mean, but he's super honest with his comments. It does kind suck that they don't take cards, but it's also CHEAPER than most schools too. The there are two female receptionists that rotate. One of them is kind of super mean and the other one is really nice. But overall they helped me with all the test stuff and got me scheduled and organized and always called to remind me things. read more

If I could give take away stars..that is where I would begin. I am a 31 y.o. woman who has driven around, but I wasn't confident. I found their school to be the most inexpensive for me. 1. They were frustrated that I have common sense and, was able to schedule my road test on my own. Also, that I didn't want to schedule lessons with them. 2. With hostility in her tone...the woman at the desk wouldn't schedule my test without payment first. And proceeds to tell me that's how it works in all businesss. And there's no refunds..but wanted my payment in full. I didn't feel secure that THEY would show up. So, I offered them half so that we all feel secure. She gave me a hard ass time before saying yes. 3. My first examiner was awesome. But I failed due to parellel parking.. Ik right? 4. Rescheduled my road test online again and proceeded to call them, so they can reserve a time for me. They say ok. I asked were they sure because the date was about a month away! They said yes! 5. Show up to give them payment the day b4 my test and guess WHAT! I'm not in the book. Now she says we can't put it in the book unless you give me money first. I'm beyond pissed now. I literally debate with this woman about my phone call but finally ask, "so, do u have a car available for tomorrow"? And yes she does. So she takes my money and pens me in. 6. I show up for my test. My permit is not neat (my fault) but was used in prior testing. Not this time! Different instructor who said she can't do it..but she CAN fit me in this afternoon if I went to get a new one. I'm like ok bet. The examiner asks my sponser if they can come back...of course it's a no. 7. I go to the office around 4pm that day to aee about rescheduling. I got met with nothing but animosity and no help. All they want is money. All she kept trying to do was suggest I take some classes from them. Like HA! In your dreams lady. She argued with me about how I do business is wrong. I'm wrong for securing my spot and to make sure you don't stiff me. They have bad reviews and I suggest EVERYONE listen to them. I am an adult driver who has had 4-5 hours of driving practice with friends. I wanted to go to a driving school to do 1-3 lessons to make sure I was learning from a professional who knew all the rules that the RMV would keeping an eye out for. Kent, who was my instructor, was great. He pointed out key mistakes I made that could have led to a failed test and made sure to review them with me at the end of the lesson. He was patient and pleasant and helped me feel a lot more confident in my driving. He also told me that I was ready and didn't need to take another lesson - clearly looking out for my best interest, both in terms of my time and money. One frustration I had was that while the front desk / management is patient and helpful, they are very very busy (just like any other school), so booking classes and tests can take time. you have to wait on the line often times when you call to schedule and they are booked up, usually a month out. Be prepared to pay in cash for lessons and tests. For the price and quality, highly recommend. Just make sure to book in advance so you aren't trying to scramble for last minute appointments. read more

As a slow learner, I opted for the 15 class package and I ended up only using 12 classes before passing the road test. I didn't know you could request for instructors until my last few class but I somehow always ended up with either Eric or Matthew and they were both great! Matthew was calm and patient while Eric took the straight-up approach and would tell you like it is. Both gave me tricks and tips on the road and I passed on my first try! They were also very encouraging too! Scheduling was easy and I didn't have a problem. The only minor issue I had with them is that they closed out my file after I passed. I paid for a 15 class package but only took 12 so I wanted to use my last 3 classes to practice driving on the highway. Every time I called, they were always so confused and didn't understand why I wanted to schedule a class even though I passed. At the end of my last class, there was even more confusion as my instructor took me back to the school to pay. Thankfully, I was cleared when I explained the situation to him. TIP: If you've paid for a package, you should tally up how many classes you took and how many are left. If you've passed and still have classes left, don't be shy or think it's inconvenient to schedule more driving lessons. It's $32/lesson and I don't think they give refunds. read more

I've only used this service once. I had a English- speaking coach who kept telling me "xxxx, ok!". Stop saying ok at the end of every sentence! It made me feel like an idiot. The coach I had just let me drive around and expect me to learn from mistakes. I personally would appreciate some overviews of commonly made mistakes by new drivers. The worst/shocking situation happened while I came along with several other students for the road test. There were two cars from the school, one for people preferring mandarin-speaking coach and one for people preferring English-speaking coach. The English-speaking coach smirked at the roadside and complaint to the English-preferred students that "these f**king Chinese students are just plain stupid and want to pass the road test"! I had a very positive experience with this school. I took 3 classes with Andrew and learnt a lot of helpful things. Each class, we did a lot of parallel parking, 3-point turns, etc., and driving in the area. Andrew taught me a more efficient way of parallel parking and gave me a number of hints that I find very helpful for my future driving. I previously took 3 classes with another school in Cambridge, and that instructor barely taught me anything. I'm very happy I switched to the City Auto School. Also, before my first class, I read the reviews online and got quite scared. But the ladies at the reception were nice to me, Andrew is a great driving instructor, the prices are lower than in many other schools, and passed my test. I recommend getting a class right before your test, this helped me to stay calm on the test day. read more

Idk why some people have given this school such bad ratings because I know a few people including myself who have gone here and have learned to be great drivers. WORST experience ever for driving test with this school! 1. I booked a class before the test. The instructor yelled at me for the whole class picking on my driving and was so mad when I stopped at a red light for a right turn (with a no turn on red sign) 2. During my test, the DMV lady was cold and gives me a face as if I owe her $5000. She failed me on turning too fast on a right turn, at 20 mph with no cars around. 3. After She failed me, the DMV lady asked me how many classes I have taken with City auto, then said my instructor IS A GREAT DRIVER and I SHOULD TAKE MORE CLASSES WITH THIS SCHOOL! I've had a pretty good experience with them. I wanted to be done with my driving license process/application ASAP! I took the online test at Boston RMV on a Wednesday. Next week on Monday, after quite some research online and multiple phone calls to different driving schools, I finalized City Auto School. Went there on Monday to pay the Road Test fees (they accept only cash.) As I wanted it to be ASAP, I had to pay a little extra than their normal fees, but they got me the road test for that Thursday. Took 2 lessons with them the next day, the instructor tells you a lot of things, where you are going wrong in every situation. Side note, I have driven for quite some years in India, I took these lessons just to get familiarized with the rules here. On the day of the Road Test, they called me to the driving school at 1 pm. The lady took us (me and some other students) to Dorchester for the road test. I was the first one to go, they make you do the usual things (3 point turn, parallel park, pull over) and if you know how to drive, it's pretty basic. Passed the test. The lady dropped us back to the school. Went to the RMV, paid the fees. One week later, got the license in my mailbox. Not knowing people who own a car and all the other hassle is saved if you go with them. Great for international students who want a driving license here. I make an appointment at 8:30 in the morning for a road test, but instructor shows up at 8:56. He doesn't say sorry for being late.There is 28 degree after the snow day. The receptionist is extremely rude. She told me to wait for 8:30 in the T station and instructor will come to pick me up. I wait about a half hour in the freezing morning at the T station, don't she need to feel little sorry for me? All right, she thinks I am wrong because road test is at 9:00am. Excuse me, if you already know the instructor will show up close to 9:00 am, can you please let me know? And why you told me to wait for 8:30? Good value for money (I got the 10-lessons+road test package). Convenient location, right by Broadway station on the red line, and they pick you up from there if you ask. Every instructor I had was punctual, friendly, calm and very helpful. They were good at explaining techniques, correcting me where necessary, answering questions, checking that I knew certain specifics e.g. how to turn on the high beam, and asking me if there was something in particular that I wanted to work on. For booking lessons and the road test you have to call the school (and if you email, they'll tell you to call), and the receptionists are fairly competent and efficient (although sometimes a little abrupt in manner). It makes sense to book the road test through the school even if you know how to drive and don't take lessons with them, because as a driving school they get priority for booking road test slots. Overall, this school made learning to drive and getting the license a straightforward affair. I would definitely recommend them. read more

Got my DL in first attempt. Good people who work quick. Open to rescheduling your times and punctual. Cheaper than other schools. I had James as the instructor and he was awesome. Gave me some important pointers throughout. I drove in my home country so took 4 classes with them which turned out to be just the right number. Downsides- communication can be tough, they don't speak English very well. But it's ok(maybe I got an american instructor so didn't feel it much due to less interaction with others). Also, they only take cash which is a bit inconvenient sometimes. All in all a good experience and target accomplished without spending a lot. read more

I've had enough of this school. And it's not because I failed the road test. One star for some of the instructors. James is funny and my favorite. Kyle is a decent teacher too but I only had him for the last class. The thing is that they are all completely different and follow no discipline. I just realized that no one taught me basic rules after 9 classes. The ladies in the office, rude. They have no intention to be nice. And they can never book a road test for week days or explain how it works. Here comes my road test last Saturday. There were 40 people, all from this school. After waiting for 3 hours, I was nervous to death. More than half didn't pass. A nightmare. I just switched to another school cuz they could schedule a road test for 2 weeks after. City Auto is great and super affordable. I set out to get my license... at 27.. So needless to say, I needed alot of practice and even more patience, and the instructors at City Auto provided both. I appreciated that the school pairs you with different instructors throughout your lessons because each instructor has a different style and approach... . And I passed my road test on my first try last Friday! I definitely reccomend using thier car for the road test so you can practice in it. I would recommend one of their instructors, LEON, in my very first comment on Yelp, because he is really a good teacher for beginners, even those who have Driving Phobia. Leon is very patient and considerate, he could understand your fear, so that he would never make you feel more nervous. He taught me little by little, and gave me lots of encouragement. After about 5 classes, I totally got rid of Driving Phobia, and even felt that driving is an interesting thing. In addition, he is professional and reliable. During every class, he taught me many details and techniques which are not only useful for road test, but also crucial to daily driving. Compared with instructors who taught my friends and my husband, Leon is definitely one of the most ideal teacher for you to choose, no matter you want to pass the road test or you just need to improve your driving skills. Passed my road test a week ago. My driving instructor was Matthew and he was great. He is the kind of instructor that would not shout at you for making a mistake and makes me feel positive when I do something correct. I also liked the fact that the school is able to pick me up at Chinatown and drive me to South Boston to start the lessons. Pros: -Can ask for a pick-up -I missed an appointment last time and they were nice enough to not let me pay! -Have bilingual instructors Cons: -They don't accept card, so make sure to have cash beforehand. -I felt like I had to check-in with them often in regards to my scheduled road test. Even though I obtained the day I wanted, I was a bit frustrated to hear they did not book my road test when I called several days before the test date. For anyone that is considering taking driving lessons, I suggest you tell your instructor what you should practice on so you can focus on it. Stay away from this crap school. - First thing you will notice when you call them is that they accept cash only (why?) - first sign of stupidity - Instructors are VERY RUDE. Yes, very very rude. What do they think of themselves? They are not rocket scientists for god sake. Please keep your ego and tantrums to yourself - Instructors do not teach you anything - not even the basics. I was not told what should be done at the T point - jesus. Can you believe it? Similarly, a lot of other basics were not taught. - I have been driving for the last 12 years and recently moved to US. The most important reason I enrolled for a driving school was to understand road rules, lane discipline, other small things that must be kept in mind to pass the driving test. I asked to reschedule my driving test and they canceled it with out even confirming with me. On top of that they tried to keep my money for something that they messed up and canceled. I'm leaving a 1 star review for a couple reasons. First of, as a brand new driver, you get close the no useful lessons when it comes to learning how to actually drive a car and why you should or shouldn't do things. They don't speak very good english, which is fine, but they aren't making any effort to make themselves understood. The second and worst reason is the road test. You hop into a car to go 50 mins out of the way, no advice, no tips, no ideas of what you are getting into. Once you are there and go through it and fail, because most likely you will if you are a brand new driver, you get 0 feedback. Nothing. All he had to say is "you need practice, more lessons". We were there with 4 people, 3 of them failed. Greedy, rude, not interested in actually helping you. Do not go there even if the price tag is attractive. read more

I used their road test service because they can sign me up for any date in the next week and provide me with a car and sponsor. For $100 this sounds like a good deal. However, be aware what you get yourself into: there were four of us taking the test at the same time slot with the school, so on our way to and back from the test location, three of us had to be squeezed into the back seat. This was very uncomfortable because the car was small and the drive was a solid 40 minutes ride each way. While at the rmv, I had to wait (while standing!) in the hall way for 1.5 hours until it was my turn (because there were 4 of us!) I am 7 month pregnant so you can imagine how utterly exhausted I was towards the end! Unless you are in a hurry to get your license, sign up directly with rmv and find a friend/family member to drive you there. read more

I met James in my 1st class, who is extremely nice and awesome. But the instructor in my 2nd class, Kyle, is the WORST person I've ever encountered. Here is what happened: 1. I don't know what happened to him in the previous classes to get him in such a bad mood, instead of regular greetings, he seemed really ill-mannered by yelling "What's your name? SHOW ME YOUR PERMIT, NOW ! " at me, a client who met him at the first time. 2. After I explained to him that I brought the permit with me yesterday but no one told me I should bring it every time. He totally flipped out and started talking to me with his strong accent like I'm an idiot . "Do YOU know that , in AMERICA, it's illegal to drive without a learner's permit? " I said "I know but I thought you guys have a copy of my permit already and no one mentioned yesterday..." Then he rudely interrupted me to stress the "law" once again like I was an illegal immigrant from a 3rd World country who knows nothing. Judging from the unprofessional uneducated way he speaks, he does not only have anger management issue, he is not a person who can coach well anyway. 3. He called the clerk for 3 minutes speaking in Cantonese which i don't understand at all.Then he told me he refused to continue this lesson with me and I have to get out now. Then he said " It seems like I can be off duty early today." which is really irritating, because I was his last client of the day. 4. Then I told him that he kept me waiting for 20 minutes in the rain because he was late. He replied unapologetically "That's because of the TRAFFIC!" 5. Most of the instructors are nice, however, the ladies who answer the phone are very very rude and inefficient. 1) They mess up the reservation time: I arrived at a scheduled time, the car did not show up. I called the office to check, she said: " you reservation is tomorrow morning!" and refused to apologize for their mistake. I had an important meeting the next morning, it was impossible for me to book that time! She was super rude and just hang up while I tried to explain. 2) I bought a 10 classes + road test with $330; then on the road test day, they asked me to pay $80 for the road test again...... 3) My husband asked them to book a test at Braintree. They did and confirmed the time and location through phone. On the test day, they changed it to Watertown without any notice and claimed that it was not their fault !!! 4) Several of my instructors also feel the same way. One instructor was supposed to take students to road test on 10am, but they arranged a lesson for him from 9:30 - 11:00am! I do not know if it was the same person behind this. When we got there he found out he lost his permit and I told them he lost it and they said it doesn't matter u still have to pay for the lessons. I said no I'm not paying 64$ for lessons Tht wasn't received. They said tht if u don't pay u won't get any lessons. I told them well I've scheduled 3 other lessons in the future. So you'd be losing money and those appointment slots. They were so worried about the 64$ tht they didn't listen to what I was saying. So I left and do not plan on going back. tl;dr stay away. shady business practices providing critically under-serviced cars for tests I purchased a 5-class + 1 road test package from them. If I could only rate them by their instructors, I would have given them a higher score but that is the only good thing about this place. The administration and manager are horrible. For my road test, they provided me with a car that broke down as soon as my examiner came to begin my test. I had to end up using an RMV car for my test. I contacted them multiple times, asking for refund only for the road test portion of the package as I was happy with the classes. The manager very openly acknowledged that she provided me and three others with a faulty car but also said that she will not refund the money and I can "complain to whomever I want." The worst thing was that when the broke down, the dashboard showed that critical systems such as airbags and tires needed servicing and that the car was used for at 789 miles beyond servicing. They knowingly provided unserviced cars that could have endangered not only our lives, but also other drivers on the road. They will do anything to save extra few bucks. Spend some extra money and go to a school where you do not have to worry about critically faulty cars. read more

I went here to take my driving test. I was told to call to schedule a test, but when I called, I was told to come to the office. It wasn't horribly inconvenient, but I was a little annoyed that in this day & age they couldn't process my payment over the phone. The problems I had with this is that there was little to no information about what was going to happen before I went. I assumed I would be taking the test there, but I was driven half an hour to Lynn, MA. I also failed my test, which wasn't the fault of the school, but I also wasn't offered an hour's lesson when I signed up for the driving test. So I have driven 150k miles through 15 years in 100+ shift stick cars in 30+ countries, but US requires me to take a road test with a sponsor anyway... This place would schedule a road test, give you a car and a sponsor for 100USD but they wouldn't let you practice even for 30 seconds in an empty parking area to get used to the car before the road test. Despite 3 valid EU licences! So basically the first time you start the car is with the examiner next to you! It is unbelievable, as if they want you to fail so that you can take classes with them?? read more

It's true, they try their best to make money from their students. The word refund doesn't exist in their dictionary. I stay really far away and sometimes it's impossible to make it on the scheduled time. I remember once their was a water pipe breakage in my neighbour and there was no way I could get to the class. It was all over the news as well. I called up the school to ask if I could reschedule. Obviously, the answer was we can't offer refunds. You loose the class. Well, ya whatever. It takes a few classes to find out which instructor is better than the rest. I had one instructor assigned to me on the first day who just wouldn't stop rushing me. Driving with him was like driving on an f1 race track. I felt so uncomfortable, specially since I had no prior experience in driving. He was always on his phone and was so annoying. I had to ask him constantly as to where I had to go next or what I had to be doing. Unless I asked him to teach me something specifically, I wouldn't be taught. So then I asked for a change in my instructor. Unless you constantly tell the instructor you have a driving test scheduled, they make you drive around casually. It was only when I told them , hey I have a test scheduled day after , that they bothered giving me tips and questions asked for the road test ( like a day before the test) . In the TEN classes ($400+) I spent before that - nothing! I was just asked to drive around. And no matter how much you practice, you are obviously never good enough. Which is why I ended up taking ten classes or more. After every class, I was given some commentary " oh u need practice, you dint look left" " book another class, you dint look at the pedestrian" - I get it . But I'm a student, I don't have that kinda money to spend for a 45 min class cos I dint look left. ( Btw on the notices they claim that their classes are for an hour, but it's actually just for 45min) I started driving around with my friend cos I felt I was doing horrible after taking so many classes with this school. Like no class was good enough for the instructor. My friend was like, "I don't quite see what the issue is here, you seem to be prepared for a road test. Why are you signing up for classes over and over again?" Then I figured it was up to me to get the practice I needed and not with the school. I started practicing with my friend and passed the road test at the first attempt. Moral of the story: if you want a test to be scheduled easily, the school will help you with it. But if you want to pass the test without burning a hole in your pocket , is your headache . I burnt a big one. read more

I sadly didn't pass my road test the first time and out of desperation I purchased another road test since my permit was about to expire and I failed that as well! Moral of the story if you are paying money for services you should succeed! Not get this feeling of its your fault or pay more money! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Go to school of wheels which I am currently taking classes at! Heck anywhere but this school oh and at the time the 10 class and road test was under 400 now I believe it is 400! read more
