TLDR: Delicious, soft and moist bread. This location is the manufacturing plant, it's not a retail…read morestore, but it's the pickup location if you buy their bread on food-ordering apps like UberEats or Doordash (they are on both these platforms). So I first discovered Grey Matlock Bakery on the food-ordering app Too Good to Go. Too Good to Go is an app through which businesses sell items that they can't sell at retail prices at a reduced price (e.g. broken cookies and cake scraps, or items that are nearing or slightly past their best before date, like day-old donuts). The spirit of the app is to reduce food waste; businesses recover some costs, customers get a deal and perishable still edible foods aren't thrown out. The catch is customers can't choose what they get. They order a surprise bag and they get what they get from the business. Any disputes (like receipt of moldy/inedible food) must be taken up with the app representatives. In the case of Grey Matlock Bakery, they specified in the app that customers would get loaves of bread that are nearing their expiration date and/or are misshapen/discoloured but still safe to eat. Misshapen and discoloured? That sounds like my own baking at home, which by the way is delicious, haha. And I always like to have a few reserve loaves of bread in the freezer for those carb emergencies, lol, so I figured I could toss these nearing expiration loaves into the freezer if I had to. I paid my $3.99 on the app and hoped for the best. The pick up location is in an industrial park, at their manufacturing plant. The actual door to the unit is hidden on the side. Pick up was quick and efficient. I got 4 loaves of "Butterfilled" white bread. The loaves were misshapen (one was particularly squashed down) but so fresh, soft, moist and delicious, and oh so rich and buttery, lol. These loaves had a sweet, almost brioche taste to them. I shared the loaves with my parents and my brother's family and they enjoyed the bread too. Grey Matlock sell their breads to grocery stores across Canada. The loaves retail for $4.79 each, so I got a sweet deal. Their head office is in Brampton, ON and their main manufacturing plant is in Mississauga, ON, but they have franchises in Oshawa, Ottawa, Waterloo, Windsor, and apparently Calgary, AB too. I learned that the bread they sell here is Nigerian Agege bread (which usually comes unsliced), their sliced version is called Butterfilled, which is what I got. Most of the stores they sell to are African Caribbean grocery stores, but they sell to mainstream supermarkets here too. And they sell direct to customers through food-ordering apps. So happy I got to try this new-to-me brand of bread! Parking is a bit tricky at the industrial park, as cars were parked everywhere and there didn't seem to be any signage or markings on the ground. So I just parked where I wasn't blocking anyone and ran in and out, haha. (67)

Decent all-in-one grocery in Vaughan…read more A new Asian supermarket has arrived in the Vaughan grocery scene. Mapletri Supermarket recently opened with much hype so we came to check out what it was all about. The grocery store is quite spacious and newly renovated near Vaughan Metropolitan Centre by Hwy 400/Hwy 7. It features sections for produce, seafood, meats, bakery, cosmetics, frozen and dairy along with aisles of Asian food products. The selection is fairly standard compared to other spots in the GTA and prices are similar as well. There are plenty of staff in orange vests roaming about although there are still some loose boxes lying around the aisles already. The air actually smells fresh inside. The bakery has a neat assortment and staff at the front was willing after bakery staff left to still box a cake for us. Magic Palace is Mapletri Supermarket's long awaited kids arcade and food court. It is a massive space that takes the second half of the real estate beside the already popular grocery section. The kids playground has now opened as well. The arcade has a wide assortment of video games and claw machines. Games ranged from the typical racing and motor bikes to shooters and ball rolling. The games ranged from about 9 to 20 credits per play. Each credit averaged about 20 cents with $100 for 260 credits. The Asian food court is a tad pricey with various Chinese hot foods ($2.50 per 100g) including marinated spareribs and fried chicken wings. Dim sum, malatang and sushi are also available. There is a set of tables for dining here. Skip it or hit it? It's now a one-stop shop for our groceries and more.

There is a hot table of items that works on a weight system. Everything from rice to noodles to a variety of stir fries and even shrimp and short ribs. There is a dim sum counter as well as a roast pork/BBQ pork and chicken and duck. Because the space is shared with the Magic Palace there is a quite a large seating area. Compared to the competing nearby Nations I would say space, cleanliness and flavours are much better here.
