I come here weekly b/c it's close to home. I have never been so rudely 'unserviced' in my life. I made eye contact with this blond Eastern European cashier and asked her where an item would be. She looked and didn't seem to understand or was unable to reply then proceeded to talk to another woman who was stocking the shelves. It was in no relation to my request. She then walked away without acknowledging the question or saying she'd check. At the prices they charge I expect a modicum of polite service. read more

I always see Summer Hill Market, but I have never gone before. I thought that since I was nearby I'd visit their flagship location, which is in Rosedale. This particular location is in the suburbs and there is a small lot for parking. I decided to visit for their Mildred's Temple Kitchen pancake mix -- luckily I found it thanks to a worker. While I was shopping, I was excited to see that they had the famous cream top milk. There are so many premade foods, and cool products from companies I've never seen before. This grocery store chain reminds me of Village Grocer and Farm Boy. There are four cashier tills and they help bag your items. I'd come back to Summerhill Market to purchase some things exclusively, but I wouldn't make this my go to grocer as it's quite expensive. read more

Besides raising the prices, they're leaving some products at the same price but reducing the size of the packaging. They sure love American produce. Those Argentinian Rib Eyes that were featured in the December magazine are awesome. ( two inches thick - 16 plus ozs. Great with smashed potatoes and mushrooms. I am a long time, loyal customer. I purchased an item (curry chicken salad) which I have had many times and it was clearly off. I emailed customer service to inform them so they could fix the problem. However I got absolutely no response including a follow up. This is an arrogant company which has over expanded and cannot keep up its quality. read more

I have been going to the Summerhill Market on Summerhill Ave. for over 45 years. Today the owner was out checking that all was going smoothly. She even cleared the water snd ice herself from the front sidewalk area. The service is excellent - staff are helpful, and friendly. Many good and homemade products but be very wary of vegetables and salads at the store. Often not often of the quality one should expect in a premium store . Lettuce is especially problematic, limp and sometime frankly decaying. What I bought today should not have been on the shelf, but in a garbage bin. Prices generally very high. read more

Have used many caterers in the past and this year due to travelling and time restraints we used Summerhill to cater for Christmas dinner for 12 persons . We are pleased to say the food was outstanding and their organizational skills to have everything done so well and on time was more that we expected. This is a great store but you may like to be warned, I think SHM do mark up their pantry shelf / dairy type items a bit to cover the costs of the more luxurious and exceptional deli and prepared offerings they carry. They do sell most groceries, but do I buy all my groceries here? In my case I know what a bottle of World class EVOO should cost in the City so naturally I 'comparison shop' my favourite 5 or so Toronto vendors. But its hard to beat some of the cheese and meat and fresh prepared food selections on offer. Their baked goods selection tends to be spare of outside bakery options as they try to do more of that themselves in-house... it's good revenue of course, and they need to utilize that big kitchen & make some money somewhere. I have bought some very enjoyable pies there. I think for example the various fresh lasagne they make here are an excellent choice and good value. Definitely explore their prepared food aisle. Beautiful store in a great, highly explorable location. (Nearby Chorley Park offers big trees to picnic and relax under..) And the store service is always right on point with extremely polite and quick checkouts. Oodles of parking. Do enjoy this fine store. read more

Excellent Market! I originally decided to check it out because they sell some of my favourite hard to find products. I was not disappointed, the store can be a bit crowded as it isn't too large, that can make shopping a bit difficult. They have a great selection of high quality produce and their prepared food section is incredible! They have everything from quiche, soups, sauces, pizzas, ready to eat sandwiches. Their quiches are particularly delicious! It's a bit out of the way for me, so I only go once in a while but I love to stock up on my favourite healthy products and definitely check out the prepared foods. The desserts are also incredible! read more

Although they have a few locations around the city, this place is still unique, small and quaint. In a tiny footprint, they manage to pack a lot of homemade items as well as groceries in a well laid out store. The reality of the market in my opinion is this - it's an expensive grocery store for products you can find anywhere else, but their made-in-store items are where they shine. Their sweets are phenomenal and their meals range from good value to a once in awhile treat. I don't always love everything they make, but for the most part this place is pretty amazing. 4/5 stars with the 5th lacking because it really is quite pricey to shop here. read more

I'm usually a Pusateri's girl but this, the flagship location of Summerhill Market, is my favourite gourmet food market in the city. Their prepared salads are fresh and varied. Their pre-cut-up fruits and veggies are always appetizing and super convenient. I personally recommend their homemade fruit cocktail...yum! Love the snack selection too (nuts, trail mixes, chocolates and what-nots). I find the fresh-squeezed OJ isn't as good as Pusateri's but the lemonade and other fresh juices are great. Butcher is absolutely first-rate...don't miss their famous hamburgers. Cheese selection is also good and deli counter is ample. But the prepared section of this store is what it's all about...it's extensive: prepared entrees, sides, appetizers, soups, sandwiches, salads...and by and large, these are all delicious and of excellent quality. Personally, I think their chicken pot pie is the best in the city. If you don't like to cook, this is your store. Bakery counter (tarts, cakes, etc) is smaller than Pusateri's but they make up for it with some special items nearby...like homemade muffin mix (just bake and eat!), chocolate mousse, skor cookies (my fave) just to name a few. Homemade is the key word here (homemade meaning made fresh in their kitchen)...everything from homemade peanut butter to homemade potato chips! I was excited to find that they even bring in some Menonite canned goodies from the Waterloo region that I could only ever find at the St Jacob's farmers market...pickled baby corn anyone? Mmm. That's what makes this store special...browse through the aisles and you'll discover tons of hard-to-find goodies. Oh yeah, Thanksgiving dinner-to-go is also wonderful. Warning: expensive. Summerhill Market, you have outdone yourselves. I am absolutely floored with the effort that Chef Jameson and the rest of your team put into the secret secret stash. It is so refreshing to have found a store that cares so much about their customers that they are willing to do something like this. Secret Stash is basically the coolest thing ever, and you guys should be commended for your efforts. I had to haul the box on the bus and subway today, but trust me when I say it was well worth it! I was so excited to get home and peek inside! I don't even know where to begin - the pastas, lasagna, eggplant cannelloni, the Thai chicken wrap (I had it for lunch and it was delicious!), the salads, pizza, and the desserts! Oh my gosh, the desserts. How did you know that raspberry and lemon are my favourite flavours? The cake looks fantastic too. I had to hold back from devouring everything, but I did indulge in a Nutella chocolate chunk tart and it was soooo good! Reviewing Summerhill Market harshly because it doesn't have the competitive prices of a mega-grocery is unfair. To use a grocery-friendly saying: it's apples to oranges, people. ...moving right along... I love Summerhill Market (five star rating, whoops of happiness when their BBQ comes out for summertime lunches, fist pumps into the air whenever I bite into one of their chocolate chip cookies). Need more detail? I love the neighbourhood feel, I love the friendly staff (yes, even - especially! - the off-duty policy officer who directs parking lot traffic on weekends), I love the specialty ingredients that are tough to find anywhere else*, and I love to get my n0m on with these go-to staples: - savoury pies (from tourtiere to steak and kidney) are done right - (above-referenced) chocolate chip cookies. Other baked goods I wouldn't kick off the couch: lemon cookies, cookies with pretzel chunks baked in, oatmeal cookies - marinated shrimp - pecan pie (seasonally available, not too sweet and chock-a-block full of nuts) - chicken cacciatore - in-house roasted turkey breast (see ya later, deli slices!) - fresh-made lemonade *special July heatwave note: need to bring something to the masses? Summerhill's casseroles (from carbonara to veggie lasagna to chicken parmigiana) have all saved me from heatstroke in my kitchen* I have also had experience with the catering team, and they were not only accommodating, but had great attention to detail. Here's the jist of this place. If you can afford to live in the neighbourhood - this is where you'd probably do all your groceries, including those special occasions like Christmas or Thanksgiving dinner where you'd go there, buy your pre-made/roasted turkey, roasted/mashed potatoes, pecan pie, etc and pawn it off as your own homemade meal. Hey, all the rich housewives over there do it! They even have cake mix batter all ready in a tub for you to scoop out and bake - provided that you know how to operate an oven. If you don't, no worries, they have an awesome bakery section, complete with chewy fat-free ginger snaps! If you can't afford to live in the neighbourhood, make like the locals who know their shiz and pop by when you can and keep an eye out for those lovely orange stickers that indicate 50% off! Yes - you can get amazing prepared meals at 50% off - for example...duck breast and duck risotto - serves four, normally $15-18, you can get it at half off. For regular folk, it's only good if you're sticker hunting. But this place is great - so hidden and tucked away! read more

I feel almost bi-polar about this place. I have gone back, tried it again, and am being won over a bit at a time. Being someone who like very flavourful food, I am realizing why Summerhill Market's prepared food isn't overly flavourful....low fat, low sugar, etc. I will say the food is not greasy, and a couple of their items have won me over - their chocolate chip cookies and their meat pies. This place is still not an "average Joe's" shop. I find the only times it is worthwhile for me to stop here is if I am on my way home from work and don't want to cook, don't want to order in and need something for dinner and lunch tomorrow. Even then I try to talk myself out of stopping in! I at least know that the food is MSG free and better for me than McDonald's or Pizza Pizza. Summerhill has some great prepared salads, but their overall produce section is super tiny and OVERLY priced. Some of their stuff makes Whole Foods look cheap. The other thing that brings me back is well....the luxury. I would be lying if I didn't love the pretty packaged food, the ultimate customer service, the cop directing traffic on weekends, etc, etc. This place really lets me feel like I am wearing my tiara and being noticed for my pure princess abilities ; ) read more

I didn't know how to rate this place really. I think if I could afford to live in the area and was earning millions, it might seem like a reasonable place to shop. I'm not sure I could stomach the prices even then though, having spent my life to this point living in the real world. I've been grumbling about the lack of Fage Greek yogurt here since I moved over 11 months ago. An ancient thread on Chowhound suggested that there might be some at Summerhill Market. I had time to kill so pottered along for a look around. I was delighted to see that they had it in various sizes, flavoured and plain, 0% fat and 2%. The unfortunate thing was that I absolutely couldn't bring myself to pay the outrageous price they were charging. A small pot at home cost €1. Here, it's $2.99. The large (500g) pot is priced at a whopping $8.99. Unless they've hidden the winning lotto max ticket in it to justify that price, it's daylight robbery. I suggest trying the President's Choice version for $3.99 which is the closest I've found to it in taste. Liberté and Oikos are fine if you prefer it tart. There is a nice meat section with some lovely looking cuts of steak/lamb etc. Yes, you would probably have to sell a kidney to buy one of theirs, but I'm sure it would taste good. There was a decent selection of cheese and some yummy looking but rather expensive cakes. They have a good selection of prepared meals. I hear their chicken pot pie is exceptionally tasty. My friend in work loves it-she just doesn't love the guilt that comes with having spent so much on something she could make herself. They had some randomly interesting things like the Clif bar "variations"-the Z bars for kids (which are smaller and handier) and a large selection of the Mojo and Builder bars. They also had a big selection of Think Thin bars too which are difficult to find elsewhere. I keep trying them thinking I'm going to like them and find one that doesn't taste of protein powder. Someday I'll succeed. Did a quick price check on cottage cheese to give myself some idea of their pricing. Nordica was $4.49. I think it's about $2.69 in No Frills at the moment. Longos have been hovering around $3.20-$3.49. "Good for you" banana bread was $7.99 vs $4.99 in Longos. That's some mark-up! I felt better about the Fage disappointment after I'd devoured their samples. The salty crackery thing and the pound cakey thing were delicious. They just about revived me after the shock of the prices.... read more

Summerhill Market is really great!! Ok, so in order to appease all the complainers out there who say this place is too expensive (it is!), I have taken off one star. However, if you can afford to live in this area, you should be able to handle an eight dollar box of Frosted Flakes. The market is a must for a few reasons.... 1. During warm months (until October) what seems to be one of the nicest people in Toronto is outside grilling some of the best burgers and dogs anywhere. You can pay inside, then get your burger as you leave. 2. The market has a beautiful selection of plants right outside the front door. Everything is green and vibrant. There are no half-dead Wal mart plants here. 3. There is an extensive deli counter with a great selection of side items, as well as fully prepared meals to take home. The pre-made sandwiches are great. Grab one before heading to the park for lunch. Usually the deli or bakery offers samples of a fresh bread or side. 4. The place is small enough to offer personal service. I had no problem finding what I needed thanks to the helpful staff. read more

I love this place so much! This place, along with Pusateri, are the best high-end grocery stores in Toronto. Compared to Pusateri, this place wins by a big margin. I find the service wonderful and the selection outstanding. It carry a lot of unique products that you can't find in most stores. Below are my favorites. Don't blame me if you can't fit into your clothes again after getting hooked onto this place... Huge selection of very high quality prepared foods. My favorites are the seafood lasagna (HUGE chunks of lobster/shrimp with minimal pasta), lobster salad, shrimp salad, rice pudding, lemon mousse, cherry pie. Their meat pies are famous. I am not a meat pie person, so can't comment. The prepared foods get discounted by 50% at ~7pm ish everyday if its expiry date is the following day. Unless you are looking for a specific dish, you can always find some high quality yummyness every evening for the price of a grocery store frozen dinner. Occasionally, they have sales with items at ridiculous discount, almost 70% off. And these are fresh interesting stuff that people would normally buy, like Fage / Chobani yogurts and quality ice creams, not the rejects that no one wants. Just gotta catch those sales when they are on :) I also like the fact that most of their store is fresh food. They know there is no point selling the same stuff as Loblaws or Foodbasics, and they don't. Even their packaged food aisles are mostly filled with unique items not found in big supermarkets. Oh, and I also stock up on my Bequet salted caramels everytime I come here. That stuff is amazing. The only thing better that Pusateri does better than this place is their bakery and cakes section. read more

Super out of the way on residential street, but that prepared foods section was awesome! I had gone on a Saturday afternoon so the shelves were a bit empty, but picked up a steak and mushroom pie anyway. It was a hefty pie and with a $20 price tag, I had high expectations. The pie did not disappoint! I could smell the butter wafting through the condo as it was getting reheated. The filling was basically saucy, big chunks of beef and mushrooms with no filler. Some of the beef was super tender, some not so much but it was fine as I like to have some texture in my beef. The produce section was beautiful. Even though it's the dead of winter right now, standing in the produce sections reminded me of the freshest farmer's market in July. Lovely. Great selection and I didn't think it was overly pricey. Out-of-season fruits are always expensive but all of the produce in the store looked like they were great quality. I wouldn't buy mass produced, easy-to-find items here though. Picked up a Santa Lucia fior di latte and it was priced 33% higher than Sobeys. It may not be much per item, but it definitely adds up. That being said, can't wait to go back and try more of the prepared foods! read more

got a peach pie,very disappointed. The pie had that tin can and raw egg taste. For 12 dollars I expected the peach filling to be home made and not from a can. Also got a round bread bun with white frosting and cinnamon. This was also disappointing, it just tasted like bread sprinkled with sugar. I'll stick with WholeFoods. read more

Great quality of foods! Great selection of foods! I love their prime rib dinners ready to pop in the oven. Their salad selections and fresh salmon is a favourite of mine. But best of all Best Customer service: by far one the best place for customer service! Everyone that works here is always courteous and willing to help. They are consistent. Consistency is what is lacking nowadays but Summerhill employees are always consistently great. They greet you and actually get to know you. They go out of their way to provide great customer service. Jon who is the packaging manager went so far as to give us his number and told us to call him ahead of time so he can let us know when they have our favourite wings in stock. Jon is amazing! Definitely our go to grocery store! Yes it is in the higher price range but it is well worth it for great quality and great service! The only advice I can give is to come here during off hours as it is such a popular place that there are usually line ups to get parking. read more

As well, I've had some incredibly long-lasting flowers from the florist. This place is very out of the way for me but well worth the trip to get some of the prepared food once and a while. Overall a nice and expensive place, where one would think that a customer is treated nice and fair. Not so!!! Returns of defective products. Quite frankly unheard of and disrespectful to customers. Also, one needs to be aware and carefull with shrimps, lobster salad (old and stinky) and esp. the Califia Soy/Almond Milk. The producer changed the composition by removing a preservative Carrageenan. Now half of the bottles are bad. Instead of taking it of the shelf, they put up a sign, "buy at your own risk, no returns". Very disappointing and unprofessional treatment of a customer who buys there every day. So, it is off to Pusateri's, Loblaws and Longos form now on. read more

Thank god they brought the Gryfe's bagels back. I stopped coming nearly as often when they brought in some other bagels, but now I'm back most days of the week to get my almost daily fix of Gryfe's. Please don't overcook the Gryfe's though! Sometimes they are overbaked and too hard. Between good salads, good ham and Kristapon's smoked salmon, and quick service at the checkout, it's easy to come here frequently to get lunch or dinner for today or tomorrow. Used to have a better selection of pastries, but I guess it's just as well that they don't any more - easier to keep the calorie intake under control. Their cookies are AMAZING! It's all I can do not to buy a bag every time I drop by. Suggestions for the bakery - if you could make cookies with a sugar substitute that have 80% less calories, but 20% less tasty, it would be a compromise I happy to make. read more

Summerhill Market is a local grocery store for Rosedale residents that carry 'high-end' grocery brands and offer freshly prepared meals. I wouldn't recommend using Summerhill as the go-to place for all your groceries as there's a mark-up on all items. For example, I bought a $10 bottle of organic cranberry juice frm Loblaws that Summerhill sold for $18. Summerhill is more of a place to pick-up great prepared meals, which are fairly priced. During the summer, get to Summer hill between 11am and 3 pm and order one of their amazing burgers that are freshly grilled outside. read more
