My dog had her first day at daycare, and when I picked her up had a severe eye injury that resulted in her having to go to an emergency vet hospital. I understand accidents can happen while dogs play, however city dogs staff never contacted me to let me know about her injury, and when I picked her up and asked what happened the response was "did she not have that injury when you dropped her off?". A daycare should be a place you feel comfortable dropping your pet and they are supervised/ owners are notified of medical emergencies. In this case my pet went hours without medical attention and now may require surgery. read more

We have been going to see GG at City Dogs for about 2 years now and I am so beyond thankful we FINALLY found such an INCREDIBLE groomer!! GG is not only extremely knowledgeable and talented, but she is deeply deeply deeply kind. She truly loves every pup that comes to see her (even the one like mine who used to try and bite her!). One of our pups is VERY anxious (to the point of biting groomers .. eek!) as a result of some truly terrible grooming experiences in the past, and GG is a literal miracle-worker with him. She let me stay in the room when she groomed him the first few times. Right off the bat, that showed me how truly talented of a groomer GG is - she knew that she was heading into a tricky groom, and instead of shutting me (the parent) out of the room in case it didn't go well, she encouraged me to stay. Now, I can drop him off and know that he will be loved with abundance! And that he will come home looking amazing! Our other pup is extremely chill and loves to go see GG! He knows that he will get soooo many kisses and cuddles and, when he's done, to sleep on some cozy towels in the linen closet that he loves so much (to be clear, he is not forced or shut in there - he discovered it as his favorite spot to be cozy and now he just naps there after his groom). I have many favorite things about GG, and one of them is that she will never push a dog past their limit. For me, it is extremely important that my pups have the least stressful time possible while they are getting groomed. And if that means that their groom isn't 100% to GG's very high grooming standards? That is hands down what I would prefer, every time. And, because of this, it means that my anxious dog no longer dreads getting groomed. All thanks to GG's doggy magic! To be extremely clear, she does an AMAZING job grooming both pups every time! They always coming out looking chic with their tails wagging (and a cute new bandana or bow tie)! AVOID THIS PLACE - ANIMAL CRUELTY Today we brought in our angel miniature dachsund for the initial evaluation (6 hours of daycare). We received a call about one hour before pickup telling us that she hurt her paw while having her bath and bled a little but was fine now and not bleeding anymore. We assumed it was a minor thing. When we picked her up she was bleeding ALL OVER nonstop, we called the vet and she said the injury required immediate veterinary asistance so we rushed her to an animal hospital. First grooming for my puppy, went great! They were so gentle and kind with her, even though she was very matted and very nervous!

UNPROFESSIONAL. I made an appointment to get my dog groomed at 10:30 on a Monday. I dropped him off at 10:20 and got a call around 11:30 saying the groomer was stuck in traffic and had an ETA of 12:15. Mind you, my appointment was supposed to start at 10:30. Supposedly, the groomer was coming in from MD but I checked the traffic map and there was ZERO traffic heading into or out of dc from MD. I called again around 12:20 to see if the groomer had gotten there yet but she was still MIA. I got to city dogs around 12:30 to pick my dog up and the groomer was still not there. When it comes to my dog, I am very protective. If a groomer can't be on time, I will not trust them with grooming or taking care of my dog. This one bad experience is enough for me to feel extremely uncomfortable with leaving my dog at City Dogs. read more

When I arrived for my dogs first grooming session at the time that was specified no one was at the front desk/downstairs in general. After sitting on the windowsill for a few minutes someone came in and I told him why I was here/when my appointment was. He was obviously the daycare supervisor and not the groomer or the front desk guy. He said he'd go upstairs to check if the groomer was there yet. While he was gone an extremely rude front desk woman entered, did not respond to my hello, and asked "dog name?" I told her someone was helping me and she said "ill be helping you" in a rude tone. After checking me in she asked "clipper size?" again with a rude tone abruptly and when I said I didn't know what that meant she told me I could stand up (since apparently there was a guide to clipper sizes on the counter). Milo's grooming turned out fine but I was anxious all day knowing he was in the hands of such unprofessional, unkind staff. We will not be going back. UPDATE: I had to reduce my review from 2 stars to 1 because someone from city dogs called me to say they're sorry that I'm "still so upset about it three months later" AKA called to tell me that I should be over it instead of offering any sort of genuine apology. read more

I don't even know were to begin, I'm still in shock... I took my dog for a haircut today, it was my first time going to City Dogs. As I walked in, they asked for my dog's name and immediately took him away, they did not bother to learn anything about my dog, his breed, style, nothing. When the groomer finally came to speak with me, the first thing she asked me was "do you want me to shave him?" "No", I responded "I do not want him 'shaved' I want his hair trimmed and I want the beard to stay" "Sure, I can do that" she responded. They let me know it would take between 3-4 hours, and that they would call me once he was done. After almost 5 hours, I had not received a call, so I went back myself to check on my dog, Duko. When I arrived, they brought Duko down, and I was just in shock. I couldn't even recognize my own dog! All his personality was gone when they chopped off that beard of his. The groomer mumbled something about why she decided to chop it off, but I was so in shock I couldn't make out what she was saying. They didn't even bother to call me to say that they had decided to not listen to what I wanted and go ahead and do whatever they felt like. For 9 years my dog had always had the same haircut, up until now, when they decided to charge me $70 for the worst haircut I've ever seen. I have brought my Shih Tzu here several times for grooming and even a few times for daycare. He has loved this place, always pulling me towards the door whenever we walk by. However, I don't think I'm going back to City Dogs for grooming. Not only did they charge me with an additional 'breed specific surcharge' that they never told me about and never charged before, the groomer reprimanded me and tried to argue with me for cutting away the matted hair around his nose (some of which they left after his last grooming). Shouldn't the customer be informed of a new charge BEFORE it is incurred? Shouldn't the groomer respectfully tell me of their concerns so that it can be discussed? I really hate to have to write this update and have been debating it for a long time. My dog Kennedy LOVED going to City Dogs daycare. She always had a great time and the staff loved her and she loved them. There was one staff member in particular who we always say at the front desk that really loved Kennedy and would always pop out to say hi to her when we were on our daily walks. We live in the neighborhood. I haven't needed to drop her off at daycare since I was working from home for a long time like most people during this time, but would still occasionally take her, not just for daycare but also to get a bath. Back in May 2021, I dropped Kennedy off in the morning to get a bath and nail trim. She was extra excited to see me and ready to get out the door when I picked her up (that should have been my first warning sign.) When I got home I saw that they hadn't cut her nails properly and they were rough and jagged on her front paws. The next day she jumped up to play with me while we were on a walk and her nail was so rough that it actually scratched my leg and caused me to bleed pretty profusely. I live right around the corner so we walked in and said I need her to see the groomer because this nail trim wasn't done properly and now I'm injured. The staff present did offer me first aid assistance however told me I needed to come back to see the groomer in an hour since they were busy. I agreed and I went home tried to cover my largely scrapped leg. However, when we returned my dog did not want to go upstairs to where the groomer is located AT ALL. I was assisted by one of the female daycare staff members and the woman who you can hire out to do the dog training. The Dog Trainer took the leash away from the normal daycare staff member Kennedy knows. You would have thought my dog was a pig going to the slaughter! She was hysterically freaking out, trying to escape the room and loudly crying and yelping. My dog has NEVER acted like that with anyone in her life. I obviously was extremely concerned and offered to try to assist her in getting my dog upstairs to trim her nails, but she told me "stop babying my dog!" This was just extremely shocking to be told this by a dog trainer and not at all what babying my dog means. (Even the female daycare staff member looked at me concerned and confused saying this wasn't like my dog) To this day I still have a large scar on my leg from this poor grooming job. Additionally, since we live so close to the daycare every day during our walks she still runs as far away from the front door of the building to avoid going back. This breaks my heart because my dog clearly has experienced trauma from being here. She's not reactive to humans or dogs. I now, unfortunately, have to find somewhere else for daycare/boarding, which is a significant disappointment since they are in my neighborhood. Highly do NOT recommend signing up for the dog training programs here or using the grooming. read more

We love City Dogs - we've been sending our dog to the 18th street location for almost a full year! I work from home and don't necessarily need doggy daycare, but my Hudson is hyper-social and extremely high energy... making it hard to get work done by Wednesday unless she has an outlet to play. City Dogs does a great job matching her with dogs of her energy-level (she's small in size but a 'big dog' in spirit) to keep her happy. We love the report cards we get at the end of each day letting us know how she did and if she picked one close friend that day or played with everyone. The staff are always in a good mood and respond promptly to phone calls. The "school picture" we got on Day 1 is a plus. read more

Your dog will be sorted into a playroom according to size and temperament. Our dog General is always EXHAUSTED after a full day of rumpus and play at City Dogs! We love it! Even more indicative of why we keep coming back: our dog pulls towards the door and isn't even the slightest bit sad when we leave him for the day! For additional fees, they bath, feed, walk, and keep your dog for "late pick-up" (after 7pm). Every visit comes with a report card where the team will tell you who your dog was observed playing with and whether they were well-behaved. This is an extremely dangerous place for any dog, as the staff is grossly negligent and there is a culture of hiding dog injuries and lying to owners. Fellow dog owners, I beg of you, do NOT make the mistake of trusting the staff at City Dogs with your beloved pup. We sent our dog to City Dogs daycare for a couple of months, until he was attacked by another dog. As dog owners, we understand that sometimes dogs do bite. What we didn't expect was the shocking response from this supposed "doggy daycare" company. We discovered through video footage (that City Dogs first claimed did not exist, then refused to let us watch, and finally let us watch but refused to let us document) that our dog was attacked because of an extremely dangerous environment created by a City Dogs staff member. You don't need to be an animal behaviorist (or know anything about dogs, for that matter) that you shouldn't force a pack of 10 dogs on top of each other in a tiny corner so that they are literally crying and climbing over each other. We were truly in disbelief. Even more unbelievable is how City Dogs responded to the incident. My dog had a SERIOUS dog bite that was gushing blood all over the floor, I later found out. Nonetheless, they waited TWO HOURS to call me, trying to see if they could cover it up. When they did call me, they refused to give me any details, saying only that he had a "minor puncture wound." They refused to send me photos or explain what happened in any detail. They claimed they weren't able to get an appointment at our vet (which is literally down the street from the City Dogs location), which I was surprised by. I told them I would call the vet, who confirmed that City Dogs never tried to bring the dog in but they would take him right away. I tried to get in touch with City Dogs to tell them to rush my dog over but no one was picking up the phone. I tried calling them for THREE HOURS in addition to sending four frantic emails. No one responded to me. The owner called me three hours later, sounding bored and annoyed at the inconvenience. I told him to rush the dog over. The vet informed me that he still wasn't brought in for another HOUR AND A HALF -- he was bleeding through this entire five hour incident and easily could have lost a life-threatening amount of blood. My vet was appalled by the negligence, as were we. When I asked why I wasn't called sooner or why no one would pick up my calls or answer my emails, the owner Jesse literally said to me "What are we supposed to do, drop everything just because a dog was bitten?" Are you kidding me? YES. In fact, I found out from a staff member was that the reason I wasn't getting through the phone was because the owner Jesse told them not to speak to me until they had gotten the story straight. I was horrified to hear this. In the days that followed, we heard conflicting stories from the staff and the owners, continuous lies, and defensive legal posturing. Never ONCE did they apologize or act remorseful or consoling. I later found out from friends, family, and coworkers that this is actually a very very common occurrence at City Dogs. Many of my coworkers suspect abuse at the facilities. Please, I know you love your dogs -- do NOT endanger their lives by trusting this dangerous company with their care! P.S. I later befriended a sympathetic staff member who told me the truth about City Dogs: they often lie to dog owners about what happened to their pets, and lie about their services on their website. Specifically, they do NOT use "Tagg GPS collars" on their dog walks. They do NOT give dogs "several outings on [their] artificial turf patio" -- this patio doesn't even exist in their 18th street location! Dogs are cooped up inside all day, sometimes forced to literally be on top of each other as we saw with our own eyes on tape, often lying in their own filth because "indoor bathroom incidences" are NOT "sanitized immediately" as they falsely claim online. **NOTE: I would like to point out that the owner's feedback is a blatant lie. I would like to invite them to share the video footage of the incident where they falsely claim that Sherlock was "snapping at other dogs" or a screenshot of a SINGLE email they exchanged with me -- they never once answered a single one of my emails. These are just blatant falsehoods they're propagating to cover their own asses. read more

I probably should have learned my lesson the day my puppy came home REEKING of pee from doggy daycare at City Dogs. I dismissed it as a one-time thing and brought her back. Then, they tried to give me the wrong dog when I picked her up. Then, the next day, another client said "oh! Wow. I should've read the reviews before taking my one year old German Shepherd puppy to this place. We had a very similar experience. I was told to bring my dog in for an evaluation so I could later have her boarded while I'm on vacation. Upon arrival the staff seemed confused that she was supposed to be evaluated that day. Nevertheless, they took the leash from me and hauled her off to the back without even discussing my dog's behavior, health, or history. When I get back, I ask how her evaluation went, and if she's clear for boarding. The gentleman at the desk says he doesn't usually work there, and that he didn't hear anything so she's probably fine, and that I'll have to call back in the morning to schedule her boarding. It takes them forever to figure out which dog is mine, and they drag her out in a slip collar that she's choking herself on because she's so anxious. I ask where are the collar, harness, and leash she came with, and the attendant brushed me off and said someone else will help me. We stand in the lobby for ten minutes with my dog anxiously choking herself before I ask for help from the gentleman at the desk (who "doesn't usually work there"). Apparently flustered, he runs in the back looking through boxes and eventually tells me to just come grab her stuff myself. Hands full and handling an anxious dog, I find her stuff in a box with her picture CLEARLY on it, get her leashed up and FINALLY out the door to leave. All in all, I have NO CLUE what my dog did or how she behaved for almost FIVE hours. The staff was incredibly unprofessional and did not seem concerned about my dog in the slightest. I WILL NOT be returning, and just wasted $35 on an evaluation day for nothing. read more

First impressions last! I was told to drop my dog off as early as 12noon this past Sunday. Although the manager was a few minutes late, he was nice and polite. He offered to take my dog so she could wait in a crate until the groomer arrived. ETA? 1:30pm. I couldn't leave my dog, so decided to walk her around and return. Before I left, he suggested an employee could get started on her while they waited for the groomer, if I was pressed for time. Big no-no. I want a groomer, a certified person, who knows and can handle dogs fearful of nail clipping. As I walked away, I thought of the red flags. Yes, the facility stinks when you walk in to the desk room/area. No, it didn't smell like urine. It just smelled like a small crowded room packed with dogs. It was a wet dog smell. The rug past the main door was filthy, covered in dog hair. There was a bucket and mop left in the waiting are. It's a very tiny area. As I thought about the red flags, I called the manager and cancelled. He did apologize profusely and offered a discount, but without a second to give, I declined. I have a former shelter dog who gets a little anxious away from home but she loves her time here. I recently went to LA for 4 days and it was the longest I've been away from my sweet pup but City Dogs went the extra mile, letting me know how she was doing. This morning 1.9.20 I wake up to an email that I have scheduled a boarding reservation for later this month and $100 taken from account. Not only did they have my dog's named spelled incorrectly which is probably the mix up but they removed money from account. This is unacceptable. I have not had any contact with this company in 3 months. So the lack of detail for the person booking appointments is an issue for me. You cannot have those type of mistakes at all. I've been taking. My dog to City Dog for 2 months for daycare and felt like they did a good job. So I tried boarding while out of the country for a vacation during Inaugural week. A friend picked up my dog so he wouldn't have to stay an extra night since we were getting home late. They gave my friend the WRONG dog! And when they went to take her back, the staff was confused about which dog they had given her (Molly?) and were nonchalant about the whole mix up! It is also unclear if they would be letting the other dog's family know what had happened. Find Another Place. I specifically told my dog walker on his visit not to take the dog out of the front of the building. I even called the next day - the day of the walk - to confirm. They said of course they would give the dog walker the message. It was my ONE instruction for the dog walker. Go out the back door. By the end of the week, I come to find out from the doorman that the walker went out the front door all 5 days. My building doesn't allow pets to go out the front door, and I'm waiting for the fine to be levied on my next rent payment . It's so frustrating when you can't get one simple request across.
