TL;DR - Go and see Susie immediately. She will be able to help you no matter what ails you. There are times she will solve problems you didn't even know you had! Long narrative: I have been seeing Susie for three months now, and I want to give a comprehensive walkthrough of my experience because I'm sure there are people like me who are curious about what the experience is truly like. I walked into this completely open-minded. Did I think it'd help? Sure. Did I think it'd help as much as it did? Absolutely not. But let's get to the first appointment. Arrival: I arrived on time and found plenty of street parking. There is a code for the front door, so it is nice that the building is secure. The COVID-19 protocols are flawless. When you arrive, there is maybe one other person in the waiting area at the same time as you. When you get into the room, there are many places for you to sit/lie down that are well spaced. Additionally, there are several air purifiers to make you feel safe. There are never more than 3 people (4 if you include Susie) at a time and everyone is masked. First session: During my consultation, I had told Susie some things I wanted to work on: namely stress. The amount of time that Susie listens to you and connects with you is just unparalleled - I swear she is part-time therapist. She went ahead and placed the needles and I relaxed into the process. After about an hour, I felt incredibly relaxed and could feel myself letting go of some of the tension I had been carrying. Sessions since then: Every time I come in, it's like coming to see an old friend. Susie very quickly makes you feel welcomed - I feel like I've known her my whole life. Her energy is so calming and comforting like a warm hug on a cold day. She takes the time to read you and your body in that moment before responding with treatment to address where you are right now. Did it work? Yes. First off, I no longer wake up with a headache because of sleeping with a clenched jaw. Some other benefits? I feel a lot more relaxed and find that stressful situations are a lot more manageable. I find that I'm happier these days even though I am living through a pandemic. Now well into month three, I plan on keeping this as part of my self-care routine. I look forward to my weekly acupuncture like I would for a massage. I highly recommend following Susie's advice of doing 2x a week for the first couple of weeks to get your body caught up to where it needs to be before backing down to once a week. Also ask for her advice on other life changes you can make to help support your experience. She offered me a path of herbs or I could eat more red meat to accomplish the same - I was very happy to be prescribed a steak. :) Her prices are incredibly affordable, she has price points/sliding scales that makes this treatment achievable for people, and she offers great packages to make it sustainable for longer-term (4 sessions for $100 or $30-$55 for a single session). Her compassion, care, and experience will leave you feeling more centered and calm. Thank you Susie for everything you've done for me. Susie is a godsend. I started seeing her at The Pincushion 8+ years ago. I had been nursing twins (at age 44, no less) and woke up jagged sad and with zero milk on their 6th month birthday. Not only did Susie's acupuncture relieve the sadness and weeping, but she also had a rx for chinese herbs to fill at the Bastyr pharmacy. Milk came back in two days later, with a velocity that was both shocking and welcome. I wish I had known earlier in my BFing career that acpuncture could work that well. About a year later, developed Ganglion cyst on my left fifth metatarsal, right where the flip flop strap goes. Podiatrist drained the bits and it recurred three months later. Podiatrist, drain, recur. The doctor finally said "Surgery is your only choice here. I have patients that have to start coming weekly. Surgically scraping the bone is the only choice." Humph! Susie to the rescue. I did 3 - 6 treatments in about a two week timespan and, wanna guess? Cyst has never returned. Seriously, she can fix it all! I did not know what to community acupuncture would be like. When I arrived I was warmly greeted by Susie. When I read and agreed to the rules, I realized what an amazing concept it was. The room was spacious and inviting. The music was soothing. I could choose to lay on either a recliner, sit on a chair or pick a traditional acupuncture table. All chairs and tables where spaced far enough apart to give you a personal/private feeling. I like to lay horizontal, so I picked the table. Susie spoke in a soft voice. Susie took my pulse and informed me quietly what she was about to do.. She has great skill in inserting the needles and I drifted of to sleep, lulled in by the soothing music. read more

About a year and a half ago, I got an MRI to try to find an explanation and cure for my recurring headaches and increased migraines. My neurologist said that he could see no reason for me to be having headaches every day, and he only prescribed me something to eliminate them after they begin. So I decided to try something new to at least ease some stress (and tension headaches), and I've been going at least once a week ever since. Within a month, my headaches had improved and they have since all but disappeared entirely! I no longer have daily headaches, and the headaches I do get from time to time are not due to stress and tension. I am more relaxed and able to focus better in general. My sleeping, breathing, and posture have all improved immensely. Acupuncture has also really helped me learn to listen to my body. When I am feeling stressed, I feel the physical side-effects of that stress. Thanks to my regular sessions, I've learned which muscles and joints I have a tendency to put too much pressure on or tense up without noticing, which would often cause headaches and body aches that I thought were uncontrollable. I now am much more aware of my physical self and am therefore able to take better care of it and, as a result, my mental self. At the beginning of each session, I chat with Susie about anything that's been bothering me, whether stress and exhaustion from work or muscle and joint pains I've been having. She listens attentively and without judgment and then uses her immense knowledge and talent to find the points that best help ease my pain. I particularly appreciate how great Susie is at communicating with me while placing the pins, always ensuring that I am comfortable and calm. My Dr actually recommended that I go here. When I heard it was a community space I was a little skeptical as, I tend to be sensitive to spaces and the energy of a space. I was super happy to discover UCA has a very tranquil and healing energy. That goes beyond the Zen visuals and sounds.  The space is warm, inviting and open. It has the options for one to be reclined in a very comfy recliner or when you need it to lay completely flat on a message table.  The space invites you to easily drift in to a deep state of relaxation to let the needles do their work. I often forget it is a community space and feel like I am the only one in the room. That was pleasantly surprising! I love that it so affordable and that allows me to do great self-care. I had fallen off a 8ft ladder an as I was landing my right arm hit the edge of the recycle bin on my way down. This through my whole body out of whack. Massage therapy was just not enough and I wasn't really interested in taking pain meds. I knew I needed to get everything to relax and go back into place. It also caused my old sciatica pain to act up in my right hip is well. I am sleeping great now and I managed to avoid getting a frozen shoulder. Susie is amazing! She helped me to rebalance myself in a few visits. I've been doing acupuncture on and off for over 10 years and I feel like I have found a good home here. Through the holidays I went through some personal emotional struggles with family that combined with my father passing. Healing, found. So, I had one of those weeks where that twinge in my neck just got worse and worse and did all the things you do--the ice, the ibuprofen, the heat packs, the gels. Day two: so bad i must turn my whole body to look over my shoulder. Typically, I'd go to a chiropractor but by pure happenstance, was walking up University Way and met Susie, who runs the U-District Community Acupuncture clinic. To my great good luck, not only did she know right away i was in pain, she also happened to be putting her sign out at her clinic, which resides on the hippest 45th-47th + University Way block above the Goodwill on the second floor next top the ballet studio across the street from Thai Tom. I was a little spooked--despite her inviting and ready smile and warmth, i knew she was going to eventually push tiny needles in my skin (gasp!) (i'm a total baby, sorry...!) But i didn't feel a thing until they started to do their work. I was quickly stripped of any trepidation by Susie's well-practiced handling of jittery newbies, and in under 40 minutes she had me nearly asleep -- amazing since I was in almost excruciating pain not a half hour before... Even better, since i had not just the good luck of meeting her, it was also Tuesday evening, on which (for what may be a limited time, i imagine...) she makes that evening complimentary for new patients as well as offering a sliding scale that's more than reasonable for the starving students and artists (so yes, a true "clinic"...). It's tough to argue with any of it: Susie was born to do this, she's got the touch. A midwestern transplant and local Bastyr Graduate, she brings a confident and calming presence with her, and afterwards, did not press me into the huckster (and sadly, all-too typical) hard sell trying to book me into endless visits. In about two days following, the pain was gone, and I was floored. I shall be revisiting her soon to see what else she can fix! I have the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, which includes chronic pain, insomnia and anxiety. Western medicine doesn't have much to offer beyond drugs (side effects!), so I sought treatment with Practitioner Susie. She is very positive and said we "need to build you back up".
