Moustache Joe's is situated on Pitt street…read more The atmosphere is romantic, the food is expensive. Yet for some reason, we were greeted by a man in jeans and a tee, which completely threw me off. Did I get too dolled up? Looking around, I saw no baby seats. I don't think you can call it a family restaurant... it's much to fancy for that. We felt the need to whisper throughout our whole meal, which was fine, as I spend most of my time shouting after my 11 month old anyway. Here we were on a date, on a Tuesday! What an awesome way to break up the week. My spouse wanted a beer, but what they had listed as available wasn't *actually* available on tap. So he went with another option, a Stella. We had the Mediterranean bruschetta, which was lovely. They shaped the bread pieces like hearts, which was cute and clever. We ordered steak and chicken, and our orders came with Roasted beets. The end result was a meal that was 65$. 10$ for an appetizer (decent), and then roughly 20$ for each plate. Then the beer. Then taxes... If it wasn't for the 25$ gift card my brother had given me, I think I would have had a heart attack. But that's the price you pay to keep love alive, right? Martin says he would go back... I think it was lovely to do once, and I am curious about their lunch menu (which is a grab and go), but I am much more inclined to go and try yet another place then to return here for supper. Maybe it's because I am a mother, and because we both have to work to make ends meet, but for supper, I still prefer a meal that gives me "unlimited" something with it (bread, salad, coffee??). I suppose it's uncultured of me, but hey, that's how I roll.

The night started off ok enough, was greeted by a friendly server who was happy to accept a few free appetizer coupons we had, but after that, things went downhill fast. I ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio which showed up to the table warm so I took some ice from a water glass and crisis averted, after all I am not normally the type to complain. The apps showed up which actually weren't half bad but did take a while to come out. Looking forward to the main course as I had decided to splurge and order myself a rib eye which goes for $35. As we were waiting for our mains I looked down to realize that there were FOUR fruit flies swimming in my wine! I flagged down the server to let her know and her response was that she was already fully aware of the fly problem! She apologized and brought me a new half-glass of warm wine and proceeded to offer coasters to me and my friends to put over top of our glasses to keep the flies out for the rest of our meal. Next our 'artisan' salads came out which were literally a few chopped tomatoes with some sad romaine lettuce wrapped in a thin slice of cucumber and drizzled with a little balsamic and oil. Boring at most, but still looking forward to the steak. By this time we were starting to get antsy as our food hadn't come out yet and it had been at least half an hour and the restaurant was less than half full.. after about 10 more minutes it finally arrived. All of our meals were described as coming with warm garlic bread, potatoes and fresh vegetables- this wasn't even close to what we got. First off. there wasn't a piece of bread in sight. Not on the plates and not in a basket. The 'fresh vegetables' consisted of one sad piece of broccoli and a pile of thinly sliced mushy carrots. My steak was cooked properly which I was surprised about but it was supposed to have mushrooms and blue cheese on top. There were a couple mushrooms however the cheese seemed to be completely missing and there was a huuuuge amount of salt in it's place. I could barely eat the meat. My friend ordered chicken and when it came out it was soo tiny we all looked around at each other in disbelief, that dish was over $20 on the menu! The server hastily cleared our dishes and quickly offered dessert and coffee which we declined. There was no question from her about whether I had enjoyed my steak or not, even though I didn't finish most of it. When the bills came I was charged for my warm glass of fruit fly wine which I was too embarrassed to ask to have taken off. Maybe we should have spoken up, but for a place with prices like that one would expect more of a concern from the server or owner (who was present and in a casual button down shirt and cargo shorts!). On our way out he was standing by the door and didn't even offer a thank you or smile, he actually ignored us, didn't even look up from what he was doing. In all my years of dining out I don't think I have had a worse experience from a place I was expecting to be 'fine dining' I will definitely never go back or suggest it to anyone.
