I search for butchers and smokehouses when traveling. When multiple people leap forward with the same name immediately when you ask where you can find some quality that says something. When they are quite some distance away from it that's another indicator. And then when you see the long running history.... You need to get there. Well the stars aligned and I've been talking about the City Meat Market for a week now. Solid space made like you might for big family gathering. I had the most excellent smoked pork chop, some summer sausage, sticks, and smoked salmon. I do not imagine being disappointed with anything produced here. The best beef jerky I've had in years. It's cut about a quqrter of an inch thick, very lean, and with the grain so it's easy to bite off pieces. Nice heavy smoke flavor, not peppery or artificially flavored, not salty. Just good smoky, meaty flavor. And it's very reasonably priced--a pound costs about one of those 4-ounce packages costs elsewhere. read more

This is a great stop for anyone driving the river road. Small store has delicious smoked meats that make an excellent picnic lunch. We had smoked chicken breast that was absolutely delicious. Meat sticks are very good too. I liked the original a bit more than the hot stick. They have other snacks and beverage too. Counter service was very friendly and helpful. I have not visited this store, but my husband has several times. He started going there on recommendations of coworkers. He always praised the meat he's gotten there. He stopped there this afternoon to pick up dinner. I am a very picky eater. I love a good steak, but it needs to be tender with NO fat. They didn't have anything on display like that. They cut a good size piece for me. It was awesome! I appreciate that they went out of their way for me for one of the best steaks I've had. We will be back! read more

A friend of mine told this is the place to go for jerky. They have dry goods and a butcher case with various cuts of meat They also have cheese and cheese curds some from a nearby dairy. We purchased a pound of beef jerky (half mild, half hot.). We passed over pork and turkey because we're ... well, chicken. This jerky is a carnivore's delight. Its really slabs of jerked round steak. Quite meaty and quite good. Next time I am going to have to suck it up and try the other jerky's. read more

I was skeptical, the place looks like a corner grocery from my childhood and they really didn't have that impressive of a meat counter. I actually walked back out to the car to call the guy who referred me there, to make sure I was at the right place. Then I went back in and bought $50 worth to try. Glad I did. The summer sausage and pork jerky were in the back, not displayed in the meat counter. We have now had the time to eat a full stick of the summer sausage , a full piece of the pork jerky & also one huge ring bologna....this place is the real deal and I will be back. I'd give the summer sausage a 10/10. It is the best summer sausage I've had & I make my own. Pork jerky 10/10 also. Never thought to make jerky from pork but I sure will now. I make beef jerky from top round & this is different and prolly a lot cheaper to make. Ring Bologna 10/10 also. This is my new favorite ring bologna also. Huge thick rings, guessing 2# or so? CITY MEAT MARKET IS NUMBER ONE! I've been going to the meat market since I was old enough to pull the wagon and pick up milk for Harmon's High Chap.( They get all their meats there.) There is no jerky on the planet that comes close... and don't even get me started on their bacon... just do it, you're welcome. When I was overseas, my VFW post sent me 5 pounds of jerky from the meat market for me and my military comrades. We have stop many times while traveling to Lansing IA and WOW.....Beef sticks are amazing, we have enjoyed the thick cut bacon, pork chops and most of all the ring bologna. Our recent stop resulted in the purchase of some awesome rib eye steaks, some hot smoked sausage and a slab or the best smoked baby back ribs that I have ever had including the ones that I smoke!! This is 185 miles from my house so whenever I am in that area I make a point to stop and get some great smoked meat. Next time I will be calling ahaead for a few slabs of the ribs. read more

Riding the Mississippi road trail when we happened into the meat market. Great people working there. Kind of like a small city store that you might expect to find along the great river. If you love meat you will love City Meat Market. The meat here is second to none. We have tried, Bacon, Rib Eye, Sweet Pork Jerky, Dried Beef, and both Hot and Mild Beef Sticks, and every one of them have been fantastic, They smoke with hickory. The place is defiantly nothing fancy, but looks can be very deceiving. New Albin is a small Iowa town of about 500 people just over the Minnesota Border on the Mississippi River south of LaCresent. We make the trim about 4 times a year to stock up. I would advise you to call ahead for your order as they make limited quantities of some items. A definite bonus is that it is a very scenic drive down the river from Minneapolis to get there. Try it. You will be hooked! read more

This place is such a hot mess inside, but it is the kind of hot mess you dream of! They have everything from smoked pork jerky to local asparagus in the spring. 5 stars isn't even enough to say how GREAT this place is. We were taking a trip to Wisconsin and stopped at the meat market for some jerky, which my boyfriend couldn't say enough about and OMG it is AMAZING!!!! Roughly 4 hours from home and repeat visits will definitely be in the near future. Perhaps regular Christmas gifts for the family (if we can stay out of it of course ;) I find myself going to the fridge and be nothing but disappointed because we don't have anymore. I know now to stock up tremendously because let me tell you, as soon as you taste it, that is all you will ever want! We just got a pound of the mild and a pound of the spicy beef jerky this time around, but will have to check out the other items as well. Impressed actually we succeeded in making it last 2 weeks.
