Apologies for this delayed review. While on holiday in Sept, I had the opportunity to visit Chicago Comics. It is a wonderful shop with an extensive selection of current comicbooks and graphic novels. I especially appreciated that they carry top selling graphic novels as well as deluxe, indie, and obscure graphic novels. The selection of back issue dealer boxes is decent but I've a feeling they have access to more if you have a request list. If you're traveling from out of town and on the hunt for graphic novels, I recommend checking this place out. It is located not to far from Wrigley Field, and operated by a welcoming owner and staff. read more

Was in Chicago visiting some friends and stumbled onto Chicago Comics while walking from Wrigleyville to Lincoln Park. Walked in and was greeted by the two employees behind the counter. Very nice and accommodating. Started by browsing the new comics sections along the wall. Then walked through the back issues until I found the 25 cent area near the back. Had a blast digging through about six boxes. Gathered up about 5-10 comics and walked up to the cashier and cashed out. Overall a really great place with a fantastic selection of comics and graphic novels. Would absolutely recommend coming here if you're a collector. read more

I visited Chicago last weekend and saw two value packs I wanted. I only bought one, thinking I shouldn't be spending too much of my trip money on frivolous things like comics. Plus I packed my two bags super tight and didn't have much room to spare. I bought the cheaper, smaller value pack and left. I got back home to Pennsylvania and couldn't find the same comics (Redlands, 12 issues) on eBay for a comparable price. I thought about getting the two graphic novels but it would be a little more $ to buy them and I didn't really care but if I could choose I wanted the individual comics. I e-mailed Chicago comics and to my surprise they agreed to charge me for them via PayPal and mailed them. Packaging was very nice and secure! I'm very pleased. Also, I liked the other two comic shops I visited in Chicago (Alleycat is adorable with their walkway entrance and Graham Cracker comics are nice) but Chicago Comics was my favorite one that I visited. Will definitely be going back there if I'm ever in Chicago! read more

Randomly stopped in here while in the area and I'm glad I did! They have a lot of cool things here. I don't read very man comics, but this place is really inspiring. I saw some cool things like Akira but like Simpsons version? Saw a Mountains of Madness comic book. There were some cool shirts and many of those Funko Pop figures. There were also a bunch of cool books that I'd like to look into later. They made some good recommendations like Good Omens by Neil Gaiman, Spiral by Koji Suzuki (author of The Ring) and A Greater Monster by David Katzman (recommended by Jeff Vandermeer who wrote Annihilation). They also have a collection of manga so you can check out some Sailormoon and Kuragehime (Jellyfish Princess). read more

I've been to Chicago Comics a few times now, and have loved it every time. Most recently I came here when they hosted one of the stops on the annual Lakeview East Soup Walk. Which was really cool. The staff is very helpful, in my experience. And very knowledgable. The place is full of just about every comic and graphic novel you can imagine. Or at least every one I can imagine. Plus this place has a lot more than just comics and collectables. There are tons of other books that will appeal to everyone. I wish they had a better collection of role playing books and materials, but that's okay. Keep up the good work. read more

My name is Johnny T and I am a comic book nerd. I always have been. Comic books taught me how to read and have always been a source of my imagination and vocabulary. I take them very seriously. But, at the end of the day, they are comic books. The clerks at Chicago Comics didn't get this memo. The store is dank and depressing. For a comic book store there's...just no JOY in the place, you know? Yes, the selection is big, current and well stocked. But there's no sense of community. There's no camaraderie. We comic book nerds are an oppressed group. We know public scorn and mocking. Thus, we tend to be a close knit group and we rely on each other when the chips are down. There is, however, another sect of the tribe - The (Simpsons) Comic Book Guy. Largely anti-social and joyless, this sect likes to act 'over' it all - even their fellow tribesmen. And that's not cool. We're adults who read and love comic books. Are you really THAT cool? When I was a kid, I used to beg my dad to take me to the comic shop. It was such a fun experience. I never get the sense of fun here. And, if comics aren't fun, then what's the point? Stars for the inventory. read more

Solid comic book store. I had comics as a kid, but gave up all that stuff (at some point). It's time and cost consuming. A dirty sin. Chicago comics feeds that lust for color. I try to avoid coming here for the simple fact that I can easily find a ton of material I'd love to finger. Through. There aren't many comic stores in the city that can carry the same weight. Good for kids? Naw. Times have changed, there is erotic stuff easily available in different areas, keep the kids to the kiddie comic shops. Clientele is finally seeing a different breed of people, your local goth discussing the new Thor issue with the finance guy from the Loop. read more

I've been here a dozen plus times and yet somehow I always find it ASTONISHING. They have a SPECTACULAR selection, I even MARVEL at their toys. Oh, they even have a dirty section. The staff is SUPER about taken care of you and when to give you some space to absorb it all in. Then you look at their prices... holy GALACTUS!! I know this is normal now and days but it is still very much a NEW MUTANT to me. It can totally play HAVOK on you wallet! Though I still love to run the GAMBIT of the old school selection, to which, you can always find comics at a HULK of a good price. Last time I walked into IRON MAN playing over the PA which was interesting. In my opinion the biggest X-FACTOR to Chicago Comics is their selection of old and new, plus they keep some local artists novels stocked as well. *fangirl squeal entered here* This place is like Disney World! On days that I'm blue nothing cheers me up like that old comic book smell. There's nothing like it! I use to loathe Chicago Comics. I thought it was all hype and no personality. Either they changed or I did. Either way I'm happy I made the switch from my previous local shop. First off, they rock in pulling my list every month. Right on target and check every time if I want to add/drop anything. And no hard feelings about dropping any books either! Next, their communication rocks! I email them at work when I have a "oh! I need to add that!" moment. And they always confirm that it's taken care of. Their selection is amazing! They have the Marvel, DC, the dirty books, the kids books etc....but go allll the way in the back of the store and browse the books that look like they were made in Kinkos (which they probably were). Those independent little gems back there are fantastic! I could go on and on...just go and give yourself at least a half hour to browse. Add another hour if you're like me and like to dig through thr .25¢ bins!! Good stuff in there!! Also, there's a Wonder Woman reusable shopping bag I have my eye on if someone really loves me and wants to give me a present! C'mon! It's to save the planet! First things first, when to me presentation is what I look at foremost, this place is dusty and not organized. Little bit of things here and everywhere. The store space is big, and they do have a good selection of comics,trade paperbacks, figures, and tees. Customer service here is horrible, they don't greet people and have pompous attitudes. Just because you know EVERYTHING about the Marvel/DC universe does not give you the right to treat people like their dumb, because they may not know much about the comic world. Well, smack me on the ass and call me a comic book nerd. Over the past year I've been flirting with comic books, or more importantly, various incarnations of Joss Whedon's 'verse in cartoony form, from Buffy Season 8 to Angel: After the Fall to the Astonishing X-Men. Not to mention Fray, half of a slayer over 200 years removed from our time. Throughout all this, I steadfastly claimed it wasn't the comic books that I was obsessed over - it was only the call of Buffyverse that pulled me into Chicago Comics more than twice a month for my Joss fix. That is, until today, which shall live on as Gorram Friday in my world. I just had to do it. I had to ask the desk guy how to store the pile of comic books sitting on my living room floor. I'm not sure exactly what transpired, but I walked out with something called a "Comic Book Box," whatever that could be. I'm doomed. I'm ready for my nerd spanking. Be gentle. read more

How cool is it that when I walked out I got this comment from my 10 yr old: "Dad, that's a place I'd like to work, because I would always be learning new stuff and I'd always be thinking. I wouldn't be doing the same thing over and over again." The guys who work here engaged my little one with unending patience, answered every question, offered new information and tidbits, and had him captivated and excited to read and return. I'm not even into comics, but I know this is a great comic book store. How do I know? 1) They have an amazing selection. This is not a big store, but they have comics I have not only never heard of, but could never imagine. 2) Books. That's right, they have genuine books, generally in the back of the store, on fascinating and obscure topics. 3) Toys. Lot of 'em. Mostly of the action figure variety, of course, but again in all shapes and sizes. 4) They leave you alone. The staff seem knowledgeable, and many are very hot in that alt-geek kind of way, but they'll let you browse for as long as you can take it. 5) Clientele. This place can get pretty crowded, but aside from the occasional pushy 84708er, the people who shop here are courteous regarding other people's space. My friends from New York who are into comics make it a point to hit this store when there in town, and always find something they couldn't at home. That says something to me. read more

Chicago comics, is well.. Chicago comics. It doesn't have that cute homey feel that the majority of comic book stores I am used to have. It is very cramped and usually rather busy. I agree with one of the other reviewers who said that the clerks are a bit standoffish. Chicago comics is a great place to buy imports (Gothic Lolita Bibles!) and some other hard to find items but I would stick with your run of the mill corner comic store for most of your comic purchases. Oh! And I almost forgot to mention! Chicago comics is open until 10 on weekends!!! For when you just need your comic fix! read more

My absolute favorite. They seem to have everything (except the elusive Epicurus the Sage. Seriously, will someone lend it to me so I can scan it, please? I'm sure we can barter if you're the exchanging type). They'll always offer to order stuff for you and actually call you when it arrives. The prices are always reasonable. Then when you go to pick it up, you can pile on the new issues of B.P.R.D., a beautifully illustrated German trade paperback, a calendar, an obscene packet of chewing gum, a greeting card that'll freak out your mom, and whatever Sue Coe's done lately. You might find yourself skipping dinner in order to read. Or maybe you spent too much. It's called Chicago Comics for good reason. It's the go-to. read more

I've been shopping at Chicago Comics since it was it's old location on Clark just south of Wellington. Then it was one of the only comic stores nearby that I could get to easily as I went to school down the road and used to hang out at the Century mall when there was an arcade in the basement where you could always play Dragon's Lair at. There has always been a great selection here, with the mandatory subscription service, although I believe there is a minimum amount of titles you have to subscribe to, or at least there was when I had the service back in the early 90's. I only get Walking Dead, DMZ, and The Ultimates these days. Good toy selection, if a bit marked up. Usually pretty good music playing also. Occasionally get a signing here, as with Jhonen Vasquez a little while back. And they always have a big booth at the Wizard World Convention. read more

While the selection is pretty darned good, there are a number of things about this place that turn me off, and I been coming here since almost the year they opened. Occasionally, I will get great customer service. There was a younger Asian dude who worked there many years ago, and he was great at remembering titles they used to carry. But I had the bad luck of encountering downright condescending staff every time I came in. It got worse as the years went on, too. I've heard they've hired a bunch of nice, younger kids recently, so hooray for that, but I've not been helped by them. Their non-comics stock, in particular, is quite expensive. I feel there are other shops in the city (even in that area) which offer better prices on figurines, plushes, etc. Nice selection of hard-to-find books, though. :) The store itself has a pretty good layout. But if I don't enjoy coming here anymore because of the semi-elitist vibe, that really doesn't help me. And recently, a friend of mine was trying to get into comics on a budget. One of the employees got her four trades, and she ended up spending $80. Unfortunately, she hated all the titles, and could not refund them. We found titles that she would end up liking, but I do wish they were more flexible on returns and exchanges. I want to love this place. When I was a kid, I did. If this was 1998, I'd be giving it a 5-star review! These days, I'd probably call it an average comic shop. 3 stars. But now, with other shops in the area (some still in business, some not), I've encountered other stores with equally great layouts, and far superior service. I feel a more active sense of contribution and enthusiasm at other places, not just that I am inconveniencing them. Sorry if that's unfair, folks. But there's many other places I'd rather go. (EDIT: Eh, see I feel bad. I'm borderline. The two star rating is for "meh". Which I would call your shop. But the selection is a better. If only I could do 2.5 stars.) read more

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! Some things are a little tchotchke but that is the style now-a-days. I buy all thing Buffy and Marvel here. They have reasonably priced older comics which are my favorite. The people that work here aren't annoying and they don't try to sell you on comics you don't want. I've been a customer for over 10 years. When I moved to Chicago and saw them in the phone book, I hoped they were not an improv group. They were not and I am happy about that, and I see them once a week. Best selection of comics, figures, weird stuff I didn't know I needed, and good "comic nerd" conversation. Also, they don't have the stuck up practice of you have to buy it to read it a little at the stands. Just awesome. read more

I don't get to a comics shop very often, so when I do it's all about the trades and collected editions, not single issues. As such, I really rely on the staff to let me know what's worth reading. Everyone at Chicago Comics was great. Giving very broad parameters ("I like Brian K. Vaughan and Building Stories) they were able to help me find a range of stories from supers, indies, and self-published. Having now read them all, they were right up my alley. I also noticed the great rapport they had with the regulars and all the fun merch they had not related to comics, like Legend of Korra coasters. Very cool shop! read more

I am not a comics reader, but I love visiting this store. As an avid letter-writer, I'm always delighted at the selection of stationery. They have superhero packs and small (some are $4.99!) packs with designs by Dark Horse artists. I may not know their names, but it sure is fun to send their art to my friends. I also love that there is a giant wall of 'zines (it makes me feel like I'm in Minneapolis in the 1990s) and, of course, the fun figures and assorted stuff (like novelty gum) by the counter. It's a great gift shop, even if you're looking for something for a non-comics reader. My only complaint about Chicago Comics is that their take on consignments is too steep. I suppose it's because of their overhead expenses, but nevertheless it was too much for me to leave my books there. read more

I really love this place! My boyfriend and I were in the city for Fourth of July, and I insisted we stop here only to find that it was closed early for the holiday. I will be making another trip to the city soon so I can shop here. I am a book nerd (not so much comics) and first went here not thinking I'd find much I liked. An hour or so later, I did not want to leave. This place has a great selection and an awesome vibe from the employees. Maybe the books on amazon.com are cheaper but this a local business that really earns their customers! Anyone visiting the city or the north side should stop by and check this place out! read more

What can I say about Chicago Comics? They have an amazing selection of comics, toys, figures and other merchandise. They have a diverse selection of comic back issues, new releases and trades, with the curated collections highlighting creators and comics you should be paying attention to. The staff is polite and knowledgeable. I was visiting from out of town and I will gladly come back here for comics any time. They are also extremely helpful. I accidentally lost my phone in the store and they gladly helped me find it. I also couldn't remember a title and I called the store a few weeks after I left. I called them and they not only remembered, I was also able to request a couple of copies be mailed to me in Austin and it was no problem for them! What a great store, what a great staff. This place is an institution. Other good comics stores have died off over the years, and Chicago Comics, along with Quimby's which is now under same ownership, is by far the best. Most important is the availability of nearly any small press and independent comic you could think of, along with great sections on French and Japanese books, and alternative culture books and magazines. Oh yes, and many, many toys for kids and 50 year-old geeks. The staff are very knowledgable and friendly, many of whom have been there many years. You're likely to get absorbed and spend over an hour before you know it , while the staff provides cool and interesting music. read more

I went in the other day looking fro some presents and stocking suffers and as usual they had a bunch of fun new stuff that almost doubled the amount of money that I wanted to spend. While wandering up and down Clark looking for a place to eat, I happened to wander into Chicago Comics. Wow. This place has something for everyone...ignoring for the moment their excellent selection of actual comic books of all genres and years, they have a selection of tchotckes unrivaled by anywhere else I have seen in Chi-town thus far. Where else could you find a family guy action figure of greased up deaf guy, the batman handbook, and a bacon scented air freshener all in one store?? I've looked...not too many places, that's where. I go here to buy copies of Found (love the Dirty Found ones!), Missbehave, and other random bits and pieces. They've a decent selection of Japanese magazines/comics (although I really wish they'd stock the Fruits magazines and not just the books). You will find your Gothic Lolita Bible here, also, if you're into that sort of thing. No complaints about the staff. I like to look in peace, so I don't want some overeager sales associate hovering over me, anyway. Far too many weird comics that I want to buy just based on the weird-factor. An excellent comic book store that covers all your bases, from mainstream to indie. It's all there, and if not - go ask one of the guys behind the counter and they'll try to order it for ya! If you happen to be a comic artist entrepreneur, you can get your own comics in the store for people to see and hopefully add moolah to your pocket. No promises though, since 1) it's in the far back of the store, and 2) most of us are too cheap to buy and will rather just read it for free. *Cackle* It's never about the money right? Publicity publicity publicity. A nice addition to the store is also their massive selection of collectibles, ranging from your general action figures to your limited resin kits. It's all there, and most of the time, a lot of them are on sale. Or at the very least, they're not trying to rip you off.
