They are near and dear to my heart because they focus on saving large breed misunderstood breeds that are often judged by their bully looks, muscular body build, markings, color, and sometimes unfortunate botched ear croppings that leave them disfigured outcasts thanks to a human. My most passionate mission is to discredit BSL (breed specific legislation) as antiquated as baning a man from a restaurant based on the color of his skin. Yes I think BSL is = to racial profiling. It judges a dog based on their color and bone structure not their good or bad deeds. Any breed can be a "loving family member" if they are raised as such and any breed can go bad if left to their own to roam the streets. I donate to this organization as often as I can so they can continue to pursue their mission to find a loving home for "misunderstood and abused dogs". I hope that one day I will be in a position to do such a worthy cause.

If I didn't…read morealready have cats, I'd have adopted this one, but the poor baby was malnourished and hungry and so friendly, and my mind was set at ease by the staff who promised to take care of her. They explained the process to me for strays: 1) Fill out a stray form and certify you found the pet and that you aren't the owner 2) They will hold the animal for four days to ensure it doesn't belong to someone else in case it is lost 3) Once the hold time expires, the center will spay the kitten and give her vaccines and put her up for adoption. They also assured me this is a no-kill shelter, and that because she's a kitten (and adorable), she'll be adopted quickly. They also have a bin for pet donations (food, toys, etc), and they have pet rooms for hopeful owners to interact with the cats and dogs for adoption. The staff is very kind and knowledgeable, even going as far as to recommend veterinarian services for my current pets. I absolutely recommend this center to anyone looking to adopt or safely surrender a stray.

By 3P I was at the shelter doing a meet and greet with my dogs, and filling out paperwork. Darlene, Terrie and Michelle are all top-notch!! They make sure you are legit and that you and your current animals are a good fit with the new animal. These ladies and the other staff I didn't get to meet clearly work very hard at this shelter. It was beautifully maintained and the animals are clearly well cared for. They work with other shelters and Texas Humane Society to rescue dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. If you are looking for a pet, I highly recommend checking here and if you want to help a shelter, your donation couldn't go to a better place! The price was $75. I think that's a heck of a deal! They also gave me some food, a few cat toys, and a blanket. At this moment, they are completely overloaded with dogs and cats. I have adopted two dogs and two cats from this shelter, all of whom are healthy and happy three…read moreyears later. PROS: The shelter itself is clean and modern, but very small compared to shelters in Austin and Dallas I have visited. You will not be overwhelmed. The staff is friendly and willing to offer plenty of advice and tips...unless you ask them about veterinary care. Anytime you ask a question about illness or disease symptoms and treatment, they say that they do not have a vet on staff (true) and might be sued if they give out veterinary advice (maybe true?). They have every kind of animal you could imagine, in every age, but they will not guarantee availability, temperament, health. They offer vouchers for spay/neuter for those who can't afford to pay the vet price, and offer pet food to those who are having an emergency. The adoption fee seems steep: $90 for a cat ($45 for fixed cat) or $150 for a dog ($75 for fixed dog), but it pays for the spay/neuter, microchip, rabies shot, booster shot, deflea, deworm. It is a good deal when you break it down. They accept unlimited volunteers, age 18 and up, and give volunteers a little class on how to do everything. Plus, they encourage volunteers to PLAY with the animals rather than CLEAN, which was super cool. Unlimited intake, no questions asked. Bring in your pet and sign a form. That's it. Canines, Cats, and Cabernet. 'Nuff said. CONS: My gripe with this shelter is that they are a kill shelter. However, they say that they are unlimited intake, have only five staff people, and take in five thousand animals each year. I'm going to assume that this is true, and if that's the case, they are doing very well for what they have, because they don't have a time limit on pets. Where I used to live, they kept animals for five days and then they were euthanized. Here, they say it's however long they can, depending on space and health. You can see how long an animal has been there on the paper cards on the cages, and I have seen some for one month, two, three. Hours are sparse. At the time of this writing, hours are Mon-Fri from one to five and Sat from one to four. A bit out of the way. Ten minutes from WalMart. 3016 Milam Drive, by Kohler. I kind of wish they would have some adoptions uptown some time. A guy can dream. No phone calls about the fate of the stray you brought in. They won't tell you if it's been euthanized or adopted.
