Located across from the famous Magnolia restaurant, it's easy to get to on the free shuttle service, with a stop right outside of the shelter. I walked in and the employee at the front desk let me know where all the dogs were and if I had any questions to ask her. First thing's first - I was shocked by how many dogs were here. There were multiple rooms with dogs, ranging from puppies to seniors. Many of the dogs were just happy to see someone visit the area. In the center of the dog area is an outside space for the dogs, and during the time I was visiting, they were cleaning the floors. After I looked around I asked the employee at the front desk area about the adoption process, as I was curious to learn more about how this humane society differs from the one at home where I volunteer. She told me about the application process, which was very simple, straightforward and is processed quickly. And the fee to adopt a dog was only $50! I was shocked by the low adoption fee. If I lived in Texas I have no doubt I would've ended this visit with adopting a dog. I encourage all the locals to adopt a furbaby from here! There were a lot of dogs, waiting for homes and the adoption process is very easy.

As soon as we met him, we fell in LOVE. While I was filing out an application, his foster mom came and discussed his case with me to make sure we knew how best to care for him. That meant so much to me. The humane society was beautiful, clean, and the animals looked very well cared for. They clearly cared about his welfare! They described his temperament online, they discussed his care with me, sent me home with his medical records, and updated his microchip info in my name before we even left to take him home. We would definitely adopt from here again. :)

Since we adopted pretty easily in 2020, we were excited to work with them a second time. We completed the application, were approved and drove over 2 hours from Austin to meet 2 sweet pups. I had even called ahead of time to explain that since it was such a long drive, we hoped to meet and adopt on the same day and was told that "would be fine." Imagine how disappointed I was after making the drive, meeting one of the sweet dogs, just to be told that neither of our selected dogs was fixed and they would both have to be "foster to adopt". They however further explained that only in county residents could be considered because they were still legally responsible and their vet would have to do the surgery. They flippantly stated that they were "sorry", that this had not been explained, but there was no way around it! They then tried to guilt me into adopting a more medically complex dog. After two weeks one of the dogs is still listed on the website as available. No mention of foster to adopt or that the dog still needs to be neutered. The whole experience felt discriminatory. Happily, we have found another rescue and adopted a sweet sweet dog who is now a part of our family. Would not recommend at all.

They stalled on the phone and asked "well did he get his rabies vaccine today?" and then after that they said "well, since he didn't get heartworm treatment we'll take this application before the board." their board of idiots hasn't reached out AT ALL and i'm just of the mindset that we won't get Gidget at all. i don't want another dog, i've never fallen in love with a dog before except her. y'all are awful. do you even WANT to rehome these dogs???

Macdougal lived until my high school days and in the meantime, my mom had brought home a small dog of some sort and named her Sunshine. We called her Sunny. When I got out on my own, I went through a brief dogless period while I just tried to keep myself fed. I met Mousse - a Chocolate Lab, in 2000 and we were inseparable. She was by all accounts my best friend. I didn't know then but around the same time, the woman who would become my wife was meeting Sasha; a Newfoundland that would be her and her daughter's companion for the rest of Sasha's life. The love we had for those dogs were equalled only by the love we have for our own children - we're that big of dog people. Sasha passed away in October of 2012 and Mousse in September of 2113. By then, my wife and I were together - although not yet married. Neither of us were in a hurry to get another dog, we both felt that we just wanted OUR dogs back. We agreed that our dog would find us. Over Thanksgiving in 2014, we had a conversation with my two sisters, who had both lost their beloved dogs in recent months. Something made my wife (We'd been married in May) start looking. By the end of the following weekend, she thought she found our dog at Handfuls on Purpose. She showed me a picture and we researched the breed. Man, that dog was adorable. Cartoonishly adorable. Like if you'd hired an illustrator to design the most adorable stuffed dog, that dog is what it would look like. We carefully completed the application and waited. We were so nervous. On the way home from a business trip one night while waiting for a response from H.O.P.E., I purchased in-flight wifi just so I could send one last email plea asking them to give us a chance to give that dog a home. They responded that they had sent a message to my wife. They said yes. My next email from 30,000 feet was to my wife. "We got the dog". and then "Landing, I have to go". She had no idea I'd sent an email and didn't know how I would have found out that we got the dog but I forward the email to her and I dutifully closed my laptop. In the next few weeks while we plotted how we'd make the trip from our home in Kansas City to Hearne Texas, Elizabeth and the staff at H.O.P.E. kept us up to date with the dog by sending emails and pictures. You see, they're dog people too. And cat people, and just lifelong companion animal people. They get it. Pets don't need owners, they need families. We drove the 800 miles (and back) in one gruelingly long weekend. We were so excited to meet the dog who'd later be named "Olive". You could tell Olive had a special place in their hearts too. I think I saw a little tear in their eyes as we promised to love and care for her. The facility was nicer than I was expecting and shame on me for expecting less. The office was clean, the pens that we saw were clean and had walls that opened up so the dogs could get fresh air. They sent us home with a care package and her brief medical records. So Olive has had her first Dr.'s visit and she's healthy. I know the staff at H.O.P.E are busy taking care of the future family companions in their care but we'll keep in touch. I think they'd care that we did.

Any place that cares for abandoned animals is a good place. As far as the previous review... IT IS for the animals so put your own feelings aside for one moment and not get so offended. This place has a lot of animals and the thing under her desk is a very scared dog who they watch when people come in... So the fact that you weren't helped to carry the food is because they were making sure that dog was ok! Don't be selfish... You did drop off food so that's a step in the right direct :) Peace out and thanks for taking care of these animals Hope!

Before you…read morebother completing their required pet adoption application, I highly suggest you try giving them a call first. That in itself should be enlightening. There are so many caring pet rescue groups out there.....no need to respond to one that is voicemail only with a "don't call us, we'll call you" attitude. After spending a couple hours on their detailed application, which also requires references, they contacted me a week later and let me know there were over 30 applications for this particular dog and it was adopted out. I think they need to reconsider their process; one suggestion would be to hold on applicants for dogs with more applications than they can handle efficiently.

I started with a phone interview because I lived in Hutto and it was quite a drive. In fact, the day I went to visit it was raining a lot on those twisty roads to the shelter. When I arrived, Ray let me have some private one-on-one time with a pretty shaggy looking little guy. He was friendly and sweet, with a habit of jumping on furniture. I didn't expect to bring him home that day, but I did! Let's just say I called for a grooming appointment as soon as we left and he spent the trip back fighting to be on my lap. Lynn followed up with us a few weeks after he came home with me, and we were settling in together just fine. Paparazzi didn't have any behavioral or health problems to speak of (still doesn't). I still consider adopting him one of the best decisions I've ever made.
