I want to be very transparent that this was my…read morefirst time going to physical therapy and the only reason I know it was that bad is because I now have a basis for comparison. I broke my elbow on Labor Day, had surgery, then my Orthopedist recommended that I start a course of physical therapy to progress my healing. Most physical therapy offices in the neighborhood couldn't get me in for at least a month, so I went on Yelp and started calling around and made an appointment at two different offices this week. The place I just went to today was leaps and bounds better than this place. I know physical therapy is supposed to be hard, but this particular practice made it so much harder than necessary. I actually left in tears and sobbed the entire way home. And I'm not a cryer. I'll attempt to explain what I hope will be constructive feedback below. Administration: - The staff was pretty friendly over the phone and even offered to help me with the insurance process (they are out-of-network for me). - When I arrived, I was asked to wait about 10 minutes while they restarted their iPad to fill out the intake forms. I spent another 10 minutes filling out the forms, only for the iPad to stop working again. They said this had been happening all day. - When I asked if they could send me the intake form via email, they said yes and then did so after I left. My recommendation would be to email all patients the intake form before their appointment. Also, if the office had been having iPad issues all day, it would have been great if they could proactively email the intake form to everyone that was on the schedule for that day. - Finally, this office is not fully vaccinated and some members of the staff were walking around with their masks below their nose. Communication: - I saw Francis Reyes. His communication skills left a lot to be desired. - I explained to him that I had never been to PT before and that I would prefer if he explain everything to me in full detail: what's going on with me from a medical perspective, what's going on during the treatment, and what to expect. He did not, even after asking several times. - We had a few awkward exchanges. The first one was when he asked me "What type of surgery did you have?" I was confused by this question, since he was already aware the I fractured my left humerus. He couldn't elaborate. - He then said to me "the only way for you to heal is through aggressive stretching." I asked him why that was the only way and he replied, "Because it is." Again, no medical rationale was given. I then asked, "Would gradual stretching be possible?" and he responded "Oh! It will be gradual!" Those are two different things. The treatment: - In this facility, the Physical Therapist takes multiple patients at a time. The therapy takes place in back where a series of tables are lined up separated by a curtain - kind of like an emergency room. - For treatment, the first 15 minutes consisted of heat and electro stim where they left me in the room to lay by myself. Then a DEEP DEEP (painful) massage by Francis, then a few seconds of aggressive stretching at the end (ridiculously painful). - A few times I asked Francis to explain to me what was going on. Instead, he gave me dad jokes and asked me about my weekend. I'm usually not one for small talk, especially when I'm in so much pain that I can't speak. I asked him why he was asking me this and he said to get my mind off of it. - My feedback here is that, if a patient tells you how they prefer to communicate, you should listen to them. For some, taking their mind off things might work better for them, but for me, knowing what is going on calms my mind. - I also jokingly asked him a couple of times if this was supposed to be torture and he matter-of-factly said yes. - During the stretching, it only lasted a few seconds, but again, Francis didn't explain this beforehand. I probably would have been less scared if I knew the stretching would only last a few seconds. - At the end, I was sobbing. Francis didn't ask me if I was okay. Instead he said "make an appointment for Friday" and walked away. I asked for a few minutes before I left, which I took sitting in that little room sobbing. He gave me no exercises to do at home. Francis' approach to communication seems to be: as long as he knows everything will be fine, he doesn't feel he needs to communicate this to the patient. He will simply allow the patient to go through the experience and learn for themselves. If you are a Doctor of Physical Therapy, I would expect a certain level of communication, bedside manner, and sympathy. A little coaching, cheerleading, and positive reinforcement would have gone a long way. I got none of this. New addition to the neighborhood and I'm excited for the new location…read more I first started visiting their Bay Ridge location due to a calcaneal fracture and wanted to try out their new location. Both locations are equally great with amazing staff, a clean environment and you will always receive a warm welcome. Lana is amazing and makes you feel at ease even though you're in pain. The Atlantic Ave location is conveniently located with access to multiple train lines and buses. You can't miss the storefront as it has big windows with gold lettering. The decor has beautiful light fixture and the excersice machines are modern. The machines have a fan incorporated in them so you don't feel too hot while working out. The excersice area is spacious so you won't feel cramped while others are using the machines as well. Obviously seeking a Physical Therapist isn't due to any pleasurable reasons and Francis and Feliz (PTs) will make you feel pain you have never felt before. You will shortly realize the pain is worth the pleasure you will feel once you start gaining movements you couldn't do before. I'm on my 2nd month of recovery and noticed the difference after my 3rd visit and yes, you will want to curse your PT on while you're receving your massages or while doing the excersices but, think of it like a workout at the gym, if you don't experience the pain and push the limits then you will never see the gains. Besides, the music playing will have you singing and reminiscing of all the great songs your parents would listen to on the weekends.

I would say 3/4 stars for therapy and 1 or even negative stars for dealing with insurance, billing…read more... I would never go to an Ivy Rehab facility again. I had a series of compounding injuries last year and in different referrals went to Spear, Park Sports, and had in home therapy and there are definitely pros and cons to all of them. At it's best, I definitely got more attention and personalization from the physical therapist at Park Sports than at Spear. But at it's worst, the therapist seemed uninterested in being there, arguments over pulling down the parallel bars needed to safely do the exercises I needed, and sometimes attitude about asking for a rest. I'm really grateful for the good sessions, especially in the beginning. But even if it was sporadic, having those negative sessions and not knowing what energy I would be met with was difficult. I was also asked to redo my progress survey so it would look like I had improved more than I had to corporate. Like Spear (and all PT I've had in NYC) the therapist meets with you for about 15 minutes and then supervises while also treating several other patients. I've now moved and benefit from greater one on one support. In terms of insurance and billing, it felt like no one was communicating or keeping track. The front desk would tell me to ask the therapist who would tell me to ask the front desk. I was pressured to front load my sessions (they even wanted me to come in several days in a row, which I pushed back on). I didn't even know I'd gone over my allotted sessions and was told I would definitely be able to get more through insurance ... Then got a surprise bill for over $700 right before Christmas. I did not get calls back from the front desk, and Ivy rehab has been incredibly difficult and at one point rude to deal with. They say my insurance just hasn't given an answer to the forms they submitted. My insurance says the forms where never submitted and they don't even have records of my last month of sessions being submitted for insurance at all. It's a mess. I was told they would put a pause on the bill while insurance decided, but they sent it to collections without warning me. I don't really know who to believe. By contrast, Spear and insurance/billing was 100% clear and everyone was always on the same page (my therapist there helped me space out the sessions to cover the whole length of anticipated recovery time) and insurance showed everything being submitted on time. As I said, I have mixed feelings of gratitude and frustration. I would say if you want to work with Park Sports be ready to be on top of the insurance and don't let them front load your sessions if you have a complex injury with an unknown projectory.

While most of them were quite good, my experience with Brooklyn Health (mostly Mike and Matt, but also Michele) was exceptional. The initial evaluation was the most thorough I have ever had, and the exercises they gave me were different and far more effective than anything I have had before. They explained what each exercise was intended to do, and then made sure that I was doing each one correctly for maximum benefit. They dealt with my insurance company multiple times. The facility is clean and well-equipped. The office staff was friendly and helpful. I "graduated", feeling very confident that I have improved more than ever, and they gave me a home program, complete with videos, to keep me in good shape.

I came here after a terrible experience at another place and I am so grateful they are now in the neighborhood. The entire process from start-to-finish was seamless and professional. The office staff helped me get an appointment earlier than normal because I was post-op (I had just undergone surgery for a fractured humerus/elbow) and this healing time is crucial. Most other places in the neighborhood wouldn't book me for another month and Inspira got me in the following week. I received all forms via email: intake forms, detailed instructions on how to work with insurance, and an electronic invoice. This was great, because it meant I could be taken immediately when I arrived for my appointment without waiting or sitting in a waiting room filling out annoying forms. I was immediately greeted by Melanie after checking in. She led me to the back where she sees patients in a private room. I was happy to see this, because PT can be nerve-wracking and I wasn't sure how much pain I was about to experience. It was also nice to get her full attention. Right off the bat, she started explaining everything to me from a medical perspective in great detail. She explained how the body works, that the elbow and other joints have capsules surrounding them, how the connective tissue works, etc. She also explained that we will need to work on my neck, shoulder, and elbow, because they would have all been affected as a result of the accident. This additional information about the process really helped me ease my nerves. The treatment was extremely gentle and thorough. The entire time, Melanie communicated to me what was going on and why she was doing certain things. She alternated between gently massaging my arm and stretching over an extended period of time instead of forcing my arm open over a short period of time. The stretches hurt, but her method of therapy made it so that it was bearable. I walked in with a 40 degree angle in my left arm and she got me all the way to 25! Her bedside manner is also as calm and gentle as you can possibly get. She gave me several exercises to do at home and helped me schedule me for appointments for the next few weeks to ensure that I get the treatment I need during this crucial time. I am coming back tomorrow. I highly highly recommend coming here. Dr. Melanie is extremely kind, intelligent, helpful, and skilled at what she does. I had a hard time getting an appointment in the neighborhood at some of the more well-known places, but I am glad I came here. This place is as good as it gets.

And that's an important distinction. The level of fat-phobia and misogyny I've had to navigate in past physical therapy environments is truly oppressive and detrimental to my health. But dancers are trained to see lines in the body. They tell me when my hips are 1 mm off, small impactful adjustments to my positioning that most physical therapist don't see buried beneath the fat. I've been doing physical therapy and private Pilates physical therapy here for the last six months. When I started, I was experiencing suicidal ideation's due to unmanageable chronic pain. Cranial sacral therapy had an instant effect on the way I was experiencing my pain and my ideations greatly lessened. The communication between therapists is so on point, all of my sessions, feel seamless between therapists, they all know exactly where I'm at and what I did in each session. That's a level of being seen I have never experienced in my life. ***** They do not take insurance.***** This is not their fault. It feels like all of the medical care that has actually had a positive impact on my chronic illnesses and disabilities are not covered by insurance. I am going to try a few fancy insurances, to see if they will reimburse some of what I'm spending. If I had one wish for the space is that I wish they could offer sliding scale to people in need.
