If you're a car enthusiast and find yourself in the Alsace region, this museum is well worth a visit. Whether or not it is truly the largest automobile collection in the world, it is undoubtedly one of the most impressive collections of historic automobiles you'll ever see, particularly from the pre-1900 and early 20th-century eras. The exhibits begin with an extensive display of hood ornaments before leading visitors through the evolution of the automobile. Highlights include rare and beautifully preserved vehicles from manufacturers such as Bugatti, Mercedes-Benz, Maserati, Peugeot, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, Renault, and many others. From elegant touring cars and luxury sedans to racing machines and Formula One cars, there is something here for every automotive enthusiast. Plan to spend a half a day exploring the museum, as the collection is enormous and there is far more to see than most visitors expect. Bring a fully charged phone--you'll be taking plenty of photos. According to multiple sources, this is the largest automobile collection in the world. I don't know about that (the Ford in Dearborn, the Volo in Illinois, the Technik in Sinsheim and the National Auto Museum in Reno seem larger - see https://www.yelp.com/collection/0cY-NQxr4PY3Wntj3uA-xw). This is certainly the largest collection of pre-1900's and pre-1920's. Starting with a display of hood ornaments and then continuing with cars throughout the years, this is a massive exhibit. An 1894 Panhard-Levassor, 1898 Peugeot, 1930 Maserati Biplace Sport Type 2000, 1936 Mercedes-Benz Type 500K, 1930 Bugatti Roaster Type 43A, 1934 Citroen 7-A Berline, 1942 Arzens L'Oeuf Biplace, 1986 Trabant, 1913 Violet-Bogey Torpedo Type A. So many more. Ferrari, Aston-Martin, Alfa-Romeo, Renault. Coupes and sedans and racecars (open wheel, closed wheel, F1). It is a half day at least. Plan ahead with snacks and a full battery on your phone. The museum is a short walk from the tram station which in turn is a few stops from the Mulhouse railway station. While in France, my partner wanted to see the car museum in Mulhouse and didn't disappoint as car enthusiast like himself. The train tickets were booked the day before. Being it was almost a 4 hour ride to the Alsace Lorraine region (northeast of France), we went 1st class which was smooth, quiet and prompt. Being in that class, free wifi was offered but didn't work the entire trip. The museum collection was once the pride and joy of two brothers, one of whom was totally obsessed with cars. They were known as the Schlumpf Brothers, Hans and Fritz. They founded a successful wool company in Mulhouse and began buying vintage cars in 1957. There are more than 450 cars in the collection. The vast majority of them date from the first days of car production to the 1970s. More recent additions include a series of grand prix racing cars. The most expensive, a Bugatti Royale, one of only six in the world, just doesn't have a price tag. From end March to beginning of November, you can drive on the track. You can actually pick from a selection of awesome cars. It does cost extra to do this (from 40 euros) . This place was amazing! A great place to visit for the whole family. Absolutely loved it. There are beautiful cars everywhere. The history of the museum and cars are very interesting whether you are a car buff or just a friend dragged along for the ride. It is interesting to everyone. You can take the tour on a trolley or just walk around with a recorded tour which comes with the ticket. Take a test drive in some beautiful cars for an additional fee. We test drove a Ferrari which was tons of fun. read more

An utterly amazing collection. The Schlumpf collection is featured here, and that means a ton of Bugattis snatched up after the company went under. I went there to see the 1-of-1 Bugatti Type 252, but to my chagrin its owner didn't have it loaned to the museum at that time. The staff, when I asked about the 252, was extremely kind and helpful, despite the language barrier, to get me the story on my favorite Bugatti. My favorite thing was seeing row upon row of racing Bugattis in French Racing Blue, it was an amazing sight. There were also important 50's racers from Mercedes Benz and Maserati, and a Discovolante Alfa Romeo. If you are into English cars, they even had a 1934 Standard Swallow, built by the company that would become Jaguar. If you love cars and find yourself in Western Europe, add this museum to your itinerary. It's fabulous, full of amazing cars you perhaps didn't know existed, and wasn't even crowded. read more

We stumbled upon this while driving and saw the sign on the highway. We expected something small, but this place was huge! And arriving early, there was almost no one there. Still, it took hours to see everything because it's really cool, with a great layout, and it's easy to pick your own adventure. So much history and stunning cars. read more

TheMusée Nationale de l'Automobile in the Avenue de Colmar, Mulhouse contains over 450 vintage and veteran cars from many different countries, including one of the largest collections of Bugattis, as well as Rolls-Royces and Panhards. Audio guide is extensive, in several languages. I spend two hours and the museum and did not see everything there was. Not to be missed. The GREATEST CAR MUSEUM in the UNIVERSE! If it's important, it's here. This is the home of Bugatti. The french nationalized the Bugatti factory nearly eighty years ago. They have road cars, rally cars, Group C cars and two of the very few Bugatti Royales in the world. Their race cars are incredible. I stopped counting in the early billions of value. And that was over five years ago. I love this place. The hotel at the train station is very proper and there are lots of good restaurants in town. If you're passing through, stop here. First:I thought I am not particularly interested in cars Second: I hardly can point out the difference between a bughatti and a jaguar, or a fiat and a vw But Third: all this changed with my visit in this amazing car collection! Really everybody, from 5 to 105 years, man or woman, will find his/her dream car (mine definetly is the Citroen DS), and even the car he/she knows from their grandparents (the VW Beetle?), their parents (the Renault R4?) and maybe their own kids (the prototype of the next Bughatti?) a travel through history and design and motion. Must be a billion dollars worth of cars here. But for me the most interesting is the Bugatti veyron exhibit and video. What a machine! Museum cost was only 14 euro and we'll worth it. Took a bazillion photos. Would highly recommend to any car buff. read more

CAR HEAVEN! The perfect auto museum. They have everything. The Bugatti's alone made the trip worthwhile.
