I've been to a few spots in Chicago and I could tell the barbers here were much better than anywhere I've been for the same price. In the 9 years I've been here, I also haven't seen a barber leave, which speaks to the dedication of these guys to create an atmosphere that's welcoming and keeps customers coming back to them. There was also convenient street parking and a nice area to sit while you waited for your haircut. Onto the haircut! We had the honor of having Kenny Mac himself cut my fiancés hair. He was super kind and easy to chat with during the haircut. We gave him an inspiration picture and he followed that perfectly, like it was incredibly spot on. He was super thoughtful too, asking questions and going back and forth to make sure he knew exactly what we wanted. And the outcome was impressive. I think he will do exactly what you ask him to, so if you're not happy that could be on the customer lol. He recreated the picture we sent him perfectly. The fade was fresh and sharp, and the vibes were good. It was also a good sign that there was a decent customer flow. I was also waiting around and noticed that a lot of other customers had really nice haircuts too so you can tell they really take their time to produce high quality haircuts for everyone, no matter which team member it is. We feel a lot better knowing that we have someone in the city that can do a good job and we are glad that we took a chance on the right person. He also offers mobile services throughout the city so that is really helpful. I really wish we took a fresh picture of the haircut, because now it is grown out, but I think the other pictures you see online reflect the service you receive. Also the prices were really reasonable. I'd definitely try this place out if you're looking for a high quality barber!

This has happened before so I presumed something happened. Typically they reach out but I can't imagine a system errant sending a text for no reason. After I was called for being late to the original appointment time I was confused and spoke with Cassie from the front desk. She was dismissive and disrespectful when I merely tried explaining facts. When confronted her response was she was only being disrespectful because she felt I was being disrespectful to her. A wild thing to say considering the money I was committed to spending and I neither raised my voice, swore etc. After canceling due to her unprofessional attitude she then tried charging for services that were never rendered from the appointments mentioned above. This all could have been easily fixed by her remaining calm, allowing me to send the text, and we chalk it up to a system error. I could have rescheduled the appointment and they'd still have a client. To then even charge for an appointment missed resulting from their system error is disgusting. Thankfully I sent the proof to my band and we resolved it that way. Clearly Cassie has some maturation required for being in customer service. I've overheard her several times at the salon saying she doesn't care about things. And people should know how little they value a membership. Apparently they make less money on members per the stylist so I'm not sure why bother? Anyway go somewhere else where you'll be valued and respected as a client.

Ive had three haircuts so far from Sam, hands down the best barber in the city. Make sure to call ahead, they are a popular spot for the businessmen in the loop. This place is what I've been searching for far and wide since leaving home. I was always sick of the frilly, quasi obnoxious "product centered" salons that pop up everywhere. You know, the kind where they throw you in a chair, buzz off all of your hair and then cover you in greasy, sticky products all while gossiping about their love life? This place is the real deal. It's a step back in time. Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin could easily walk in the door any minute, that's how old school it is. The barbers who work here have been cutting hair since before you were born, they know their trade well, and trust me, it shows. Sam takes his time and communicates with you to ensure you are perfectly satisfied every time. He and the other barbers there all know how to actually give a haircut using primarily scissors, He even shaves the back of your neck with hot lather and a straight razor - a nice touch that is vanishing from barbershops. There is also a man who shines shoes if you so desire. The friendly banter and sense of family is certainly alive and well at this shop. Bottom line, if you are a man in search of a classic and great haircut, go see Sam, or any of the other barbers there. 26 bucks for this type of experience in the loop is a steal. read more

I have been going to the Civic Opera barbershop for over a year now and couldn't be more pleased. It's one of the last remaining true barbershops where everything from the conversation to the atmosphere to the quality of your cut, is exactly the way you like it. For my haircut, I prefer a "short fade" where the barber texturizes my cut, giving it a more bespoke shape, which can only be achieved with shears and not clippers. Most hair salons I've tried before going here will flat out refuse and instead insist on just using clippers and knocking the whole thing out in 10 minutes rather than doing it the way I like. Not the case with my man, Sam who knows exactly how to do it and is pleased to take some extra time, so it looks perfect. He's a great conversationalist and will even fix you up a nice espresso when you're done to provide an extra element of relaxation and high-quality service. I highly recommend this place if you're looking to develop a long-term barber relationship and are looking for an old-fashioned manly place to relax and walk out feeling rejuvenated. I was introduced to this great barbershop through my former boss, who operated a small company on the 11th floor of the Civic Opera House. He was a man who believed in a professional appearance and highly shined shoes, so weekly he would bring 10-15 pair of his very expensive shoes and boots to the office for me to get shined. From the very first time I came into the shop, I was treated warmly and happily by Sam and his associates. The shine man at the time always did an excellent job on all of those shoes and boots, but the current "Master" of the shoe shine is Darnell. He gives the best shoe shines I have ever seen, and Sam gives me the best haircuts I have ever had. I have been a customer of the shop since 2007, and am always very, very pleased with my haircuts and shoe shines. Sam, Darnell and the rest of the staff always make the barber shop experience a great one. I get constant compliments from men and women (mostly women) on my shoe shines and haircut. This is the The Real Deal - authentic, genuine, barbers and barbershop. For me, I never want to get my hair cut anywhere else. First, if you've never been, call and MAKE AN APPOINTMENT - trust me, it will be better for you and for us regulars.:-) Second, if you're looking for a fru-fru "salon" or breast-y babe in a low cut tight top to show show cleavage, you're in the wrong place. Think skilled Italian men of indeterminate age with extremely gentle and deft hands. Leo has been cutting my hair ever since I first happened upon him. He pays fantastic, inconspicuous attention to my grooming needs - it makes no sense for me to go anywhere else. $22 for haircut -- but I feel and look so good is its impossible for me to not tip $3, $5, $8, $10. Razor shaves, shoe shines; and yes, if you're so secure in your manliness you can do it, even a manicure (be sure to mention when you make your appt). I just got out of my third haircut with Sam and as long as that man is cutting hair, I will be giving him my business. Sam, and everyone that works in his shop, ensures that your experience is exactly what it should be. Throughout my haircuts, Sam always double and triple-checks to make sure that my haircut looks exactly as I need it to look; at this point, I would trust him to cut my hair for any important occasion without any hesitation. The prices for all of the shop's offerings are better than anywhere else in the city and I have never had a problem getting an appointment. The gentlemen working there are friendly and I always look forward to having a great conversation while getting my haircut. From the original barber chairs, to the straight-razor finishing on every haircut, this barbershop is the real deal. This barbershop cuts hair the old-fashioned way and you can easily feel and see the difference in quality. Absolutely the best barbershop to get your haircut in Chicago! I've been going here for a while and it can't be beat! The Civic Opera Barber Shop is located on the 15th floor in the beautiful Civic Opera House building. Sam, Sal, and Leo are old school, knowledgeable, and skilled barbers that definitely know what they're doing. I've never left here unhappy with a cut. They offer very affordable haircuts that includes a basic hot lather neck shave the works. You can also get a manicure or several other different types of trims and Darnell also does a masterful job shining shoes or boots! The shop has hdtvs and there's plenty of reading material; it is a male santuary. It's the type of spot your grandfather would've gone too; simple, genuine, filled with tradition and quality. Amazing Experience. My Son and I had our first straight razor shave with the gentlemen. Great Father and Son bonding experience. We were traveling home after a backpacking trip at Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in New Mexico via Amtrak. While traveling on the train I called to see if they could fit us in since we were I such a tight time schedule. Of course we can, was their response. When we arrived and told them more about our travels they were very engaging and interested to hear more. This was the highlight of our return trip home. My Son and I have found a new tradition. Twenty years for me with Sam, took my son with me when he was six months old, now he is 15 years old, he sits with Leo while I'm with Sam. Sometimes Sal cuts if one is on vacation. The reason? Family men, God loving, Classic setting, Touch of old world. Calm, cool and collected. They are no nonsense guys when it comes to the job, but also pleasant to converse with. No fancy gimmicks, they did get cable and a flat screen some time back, but that is for game shows and local news (giving the belly aches something to talk about), even a soap opera on occasion. The bottom line, I see over 100 years of experience between these guys, and I wouldn't trade my visits for anything. My son insists; no happy come lately clip shops for him! Sam has been a barber for well over 40 years and that means you get the haircut you ask for every single time. The skill, the price, the location are all great reasons to go to the Civic Opera Barber Shop. Sam and the Barber Shop are absolute classics. This is a terrific establishment, and run by such gentlemen. I've been going there for nearly a year now, and I am so glad I did. I used to pay nearly twice the amount for a less quality haircut at a higher end men's salon. Good riddance! Sam is the best and for the best price. I went today to get my first haircut from Sam at the Civic-Opera Barber Salon. Like most of you reading this, I have gotten many haircuts in my life ranging from Supercuts to expensive salons. As a 23 year old, I finally understand what a true men's haircut is. After Sam had cut my hair and made sure that I was pleased, he then shampooed my head and rinsed out all of the cut hair so that I did not spend the rest of my day with the cut hair falling from my head all over me. I would usually ramble on for five minutes describing the length and how I like to wear it and in the end most barbers nod and give you the cut they like. This is a great barber shop and Sam couldn't be better! I'm always a last minute haircut guy and needed one bad today. When I first called at 3:05 to see if I could get a haircut at 3:30, I was told they were booked (which I kind of expected). I was feeling a little disappointed when I recieved a call back 5mins later letting me know they could squeeze me in at 3:30. I rushed over and was in and out in about 15-20 mins. Best haircut in the city! My two guys are Sam and Leo, they are both truly masters at their craft, but you can't go wrong with any of the other barbers. Sam and Leo take a lot of pride in what they do and won't let you leave with a haircut you aren't satisfied with. These guys are experts who can tell how you want your haircut just by looking at your hair. This is a classic barber shop. Great one of a kind atmosphere. After graduating law school and taking a job in a loop I figured I needed to get a real barber. By chance I came here and I may never get a haircut anywhere else in Chicago. I think they are already cutting the hair of half the lawyers working downtown because plain and simple he gets it right (Sam is the one I've been using, don't know about the other guy). My husband has been getting his hair cut at this Barber shop for years, so when we had our first child, a boy, natural we took him to visit Sam (the owner). Six years later and now two boys, there is no where else we will take our boys. Sam gives them a great cut, puts on the cartoons and of course a little candy at the end. I've been working downtown for over 10 years and have never had a consistently good experience getting my haircut. I was referred to Sam at Civic Opera House a couple years ago and I'm convinced I'll never go anywhere else. Very accommodating and professional. There's a lot of experience in that room. This barber shop is a bit out of the way as it's up on the 15th floor of Civic Opera building, but they do have a barber pole in the hallway. It's worth the elevator ride as they give a solid haircut and an old school experience. My haircut took about 25 minutes and Leo, my barber for the day, was completely competent with the clippers, scissors and straight-edge razor. I would recommend calling ahead but they worked me in as a walk-in right away. Also the price for a haircut ($22) is pretty good for the loop. read more

I have been going here for Haircuts from Sam for the past 7 years. it is the best haircut, and best service i have ever received anywhere, not just in Chicago. Once you go here, no matter whom you get, you will never be able to find a better haircut or better service. One side's trying to do a mid-fade, the other gave up entirely and went straight to skin. The back looks like they used a butter knife and some hope. It's patchy, uneven, and worst of all my mom can't even look at my haircut anymore.
