Ok let's do this mon, I came to the mainland on vacation to visit family and friends and I also came as always on the hunt for great food and Diamonds in the rough. A friend suggested I try CJ Jamaican kitchen. Why not, this place is located on 4368 north Sutter st. In Stockton CA. I would suggest using Google maps as it's not on a main st. As I entered the address provided I drove into a church? There were signs with Jamaican flags on them to direct you where to go, I seen people from different cultures coming out with excitement and smiles on their faces an expectation of something great. I walked in slowly but can smell the awesomeness from the doorway coming in. As I entered the dining area I was greeted by a very nice lady who smiled and said welcome to CJ's pointed me to menus and pictures. I wasted no time and ordered the killer Mac and cheese which was fantastic! A taste like I never had and it was fabulous. I had the jerk chicken, ; side note: The word jerk reportedly stems from the Spanish charqui, meaning dried strips of meat similar to the modern-day jerky. But this is no jerky, this was delicious succulent flavorful chicken that would make you wanna slap yo mama! I also had the Rasta Pasta LORD HAVE MERCY, even though they gave me a good amount I craved for more but I knew I ordered plenty of other stuff to try and I'll tell you all about it ( you're welcome) BBQ pulled pork was soon tender and delicious because the food is to go the presentation was lacking but more that made up for it in amazing flavors. I travel a fair amount for work and anywhere I go I seek out Jamaican food. Having been born in Kingston my family has roots going back to my grandparents landing there before 1900. There is an old phrase that you can find a Jamaican just about anywhere you go. Well Chef James is the real deal. I had the pleasure of my first lunch and then dinner(I had to bring take-out for my family) just yesterday. Jerk Chicken, Curry Chicken and Rice & Peas - these are the main dishes for a Jamaican like Pas Thai is to Thai food, he got d'them bang on! Don't let the location fool you. This is the real deal. I am giving five stars simply based on hospitality. I am still waiting on food. I called them 45 minutes before closing and where normally a place would rush you cuz they r trying to go home, the chef James not only answered my questions but encouraged me to come down. Did not rush me and in fact I overheard him tell someone in the back room that I'd be coming in within 30 minutes. (Which I had told him). That on its own shows he cares about the actual customers needs and not just on the business as a whole. Major props for that. His son is the cashier/host when you arrive. Very respectful and clean cut. He wore mask the correct way (over nose) which I know teenagers don't always do. I am excited to get my order and will update my review after I get it. Oh and... all food is prepared out of a CHURCH Kitchen!!!!!!! Seriously awesome!!!! Okay.... here is my DEAD HONEST review. Please keep in mind I am EXTREMELY PICKY eater and i am the type of food addict that is still thinking about the leftovers in the frig in the middle of the night if it is REALLY GOOD. I am SLIGHTLY disappointed only cuz it was not what I was expecting (my fault) and because the Mac and cheese looked NOTHING LIKE the other peoples pictures and the portion was a LOT smaller than the other pictures as well. If you want an Alfredo pasta with MORE FLAVOR than you are use to... this is a 5 star all the way, and it has MUSHROOMS (my ALTIM FAVORITE) and zucchini and squash. (Picture attached) Ribs - good flavor but not what I was craving. I was in the mood for like dry rub long ribs that been smoked and fall off the bone. That is MY FAULT cuz I was stupid and didn't realized these are the saucy slow cooked kind. They are very good tho and a good sauce. Teriyaki chicken - VERY VERY TENDER (again, been slow cooked in the sauce). My only complaint here is that they were not on the bone (which I prefer) and there should be a piece of aluminum between the meats so the sauces don't mix. That I did not like cuz I like to taste things for what they are. Peas & Rice - very good but EXTREMELY SMALL portion (I think they were running out of stuff) Curry chicken - AMAZING CURRY FLAVOR and again... no bone, slow cooked in the sauce. Very tender. This SCREAMS PUT ME ON STEAMED WHITE RICE. (Which I will b doing for dinner) Jerk chicken - great flavor (a little spicy) but again, slow cooked in a lot of sauce and no bone. Very tender. Mac & cheese - THERE IS KNOW WAY this is the sAme everyone else has been getting. Did not like this at all. PAsta undercooked, tasted like some old cheese sauce from a can and a lot of black pepper or something on top. This is NOT THE SAME MAC AND CHEESE people been raving about. Potatoe casserole - LICK MY FINGERS YUMMY. Now when I say that, keep in mind I am not the normal person that if it has a lot of cheese it is automatically good. No!!!! This although it LOOKS LIKE IT ONLY IS cheese, is EXTREMELY well seasoned!!!! Not all cooks know what a difference it makes to actually put salt in the water when u cook potatoes. It makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!! So, to sum it up.... it was a 5star review. However, everyone has there own tastes and preferences. I PREFER meat cooked on a bone and ribs NOT COOKED in sauce. The portions of everything was smaller than on other peoples posts (especially the rice) and the Mac and cheese was an epic fail, (they must have run out and was substituting or something) but the customer service and hospitality was heaven and the boys were angels (the workers), and the chef is considerate, friendly and handsome!!! And the Potatoes - I will be VERY SOON getting a big container of it and put it on a plate with a nice ribeye steak and a huge piece of cold watermelon... heaven!!! We had CJ's food catering at our event last night. When is the last time you stayed awake at night wondering when is the next you can have someone's food? That was me. I'd give 10 stars if I could. I ate the Jerk chicken, loaded potato casserole and red beans & rice. Lemme tell you, I started doing "the happy food dance" after the first bite of Jerk Chicken. It was SO TENDER. It was spicy but the perfect kick where you just wanted to keep eating more. It had a great flavor. I was a bit hesitant about the loaded potato casserole only because I never had it before. OMG. The first bite is like you went to potato heaven. Even as I write this, I want to jump in my car and drive 90 minutes to get some. Super flavorful and a very light and airy consistency. The rice was good but not the best item of the night. My people around me had the teriyaki chicken and the first thing they said: "so tender"... then "so good". I can't wait to go back to have more of this excellent food! read more

It's hard to find Jamaican food, so I was happy to find this out-of-the-way spot with limited hours. (Actually in a church building). The food was pretty good, but not great. You get the sense that everything was wet cooked in a crockpot, or in a casserole. Jerk chicken - This is a wet version. It was tender with a nice little bite of heat. I'd get that again gladly. Probably the best thing I ate. It might be nice with some extra onions or veggies...over some rice. Curry chicken - Pretty tasty. Exactly what you'd expect. Highly seasoned, but not hot. You could probably make it at home with golden curry, but CJ did it for you. BBQ Pork Ribs - This is a wet crockpot type version where the meat is quite tender after being cooked with the sauce for a long time. The flavors are a bit ordinary BBQ sauce. If a family member served this to you, you wouldn't be disappointed. I wonder two things - First, what would happened if I finished them under the broiler or on the BBQ to caramelize the sauce and add some texture? Second, what if I added some jerk sauce to jazz up the sauce? Anyway, I could see buying them again, but I'm not rushing back. The Jamaican patty was nice, even if I wish the filling had a bit more oomph. But seasoned meat in a flaky pastry is usually never bad. The sides - The "killer" mac & cheese, and loaded potato casserole are ok. I don't know what makes the mac & cheese "killer" because it tasted just like ordinary mac & cheese to me (maybe slightly cheesier). The potato casserole is similarly loaded with a cheese sauce, potatoes, and not much else. The vegetable medley wasn't good. It was a hot cabbage salad that was rather plain and not good (Chef really needs to come up with a new veg. side). The Jamaican style rice & peas was by far my favorite side, and goes well with the spicy chicken stews. I wish it had a bit more flavor on its own, perhaps some allspice, but that's nitpicking. This is a small operation with the chef onsite to greet you. I get the feeling he cooks it at home and brings it to the Church. I could hear the repeated "ding" of the microwave as my food was being reheated. Everyone was super nice. As long as you set realistic expectations for a part-time operation running out of a church, I think you'll be satisfied. read more

Hands down best restaurant in Stockton. Everytime I go here it never disappoints, and I always enjoy the food. Quality is really good as everything from the meats, rice, mac and cheese/casserole is piping hot, and I like how new items come out too like the pulled pork. My favorite is the jerk chicken, as it's juicy and savory with a good kick. Found out about CJs through Grubhub, and their food was so good we had to go check them out in person. This was the first time I've actually been to their location, so I was a bit surprised to see that CJs is in the Lighthouse of the Valley Church, but it definitely shouldn't be a deterrent for anyone. They had signs and arrows to show you where to go and order in person, making it as easy to order just like any other restaurant. Our order consisted of the Jerk Chicken Quesadilla, The Ya Mon combo (2meat, 2sides) with the Curry Chicken, Ribs, Potato Casserole, and Mac N Cheese; we also got a Ting Soda (grapefruit flavored) and a Ginger Pineapple Soda. All of the food we got was delicious, and the staff were very kind and informative. The Curry Chicken was an instant favorite with it's explosion of flavor; one of the better curries we've ever had. The Ribs were literally falling off the bone and melted in your mouth! They weren't too sweet or smokey, but you will need at least two napkins when eating them! The Jerk Quesadilla was the textbook definition of munchie food! It was spicy, cheesy, and flavorful. The sides were just as good as the main dishes with the Mac N Cheese being rich while the Potato Casserole reminded me of a Baked Potato made into a casserole. Overall, CJs is a local and unique experience that I think many would enjoy. You really can't go wrong with anything you order since it all comes out tasting delicious. Wow... I literally ordered a plate at 11:30am from doordash because it was the first restaurant to pop up and it looked delicious. I'm about 4 bites into my food and I had to stop and write a review of how AMAZING everything is. I haven't raved about new food or new places in a long time and to have something that I've never had and be pleased by it is honestly really exciting. There were a few different options to choose from but I went with what looked more popular which was a plate of spicy jerk chicken, BBQ ribs, mac n cheese, and loaded potato casserole. I threw in a meat patty just because I like appetizers. Everything is so flavorful and the meat is beyond tender. The meat patty is like a puff pastry empanada stuffed with season meat. I ordered the bbq ribs and the BBQ sauce tasted like Kraft BBQ sauce, the Terriyaki Chicken was soaked in Kraft BBQ sauce could not taste no Terriyaki, the Mac & Cheese tasted just like the Mac & Cheese from Kentucky Fried Chicken. The food was bland no Jamaican flavor to any of the food at all. The biggest disappointment was the rice & peas. It had no flavor at all. I truly wish I can find a good authentic Jamaican or Carribean restaurant close to home. Chef James was fantastic. He responded quickly to my request for a quote, help me set up the menu, and kept in touch during the weeks leading up to the event. It was so fantastic to have him come to our VRBO rental and have dinner ready to go. We were able to enjoy dinner, and not worry about finding a driver or shopping and cooking. If you're looking for authentic Jamaican food, this is the place. After taking a bite of the rice and peas, I was immediately brought back to Jamaica. The jerk chicken was scrumptious. The spice was just perfect. Omg. The ribs were also great. The mac & cheese was not bad but I would rather have 2 orders of the rice and skip it next time. I saw one of the staff making the patties from scratch. I'm going to have to get that the next time--prob next week if not tomorrow. Lol. The food is definitely worth recommending to everyone.
