TODAY, in the year 2026, I can tell you that this is NOT the reasonable "THRIFT" store they used to be and they use Christianity as a front for simple GREED and explotation of customers........ The new manager "Ashley", who was fired from the old Youth Challenge Thrift Store in Hilton, that has since moved to Williamsburg, for "money continually coming up short". But, amazingly, TROY, the manager from the main office, hired her after she got fired, and they both have quite a scam going with ridiculously high prices on everything looking up items on their "phones" and putting the first jacked up price someone "wanted" for an item, but didn't sell......from years ago ads.... But, the clincher is "CROOKED TROY" has gotten mean and nasty with customers when they question the ripoff prices displaying a nasty attitude instead of being professional, but he is a "Christian'??...Yeah, right! He fired the former manager "SHAWN", for absolutly NO reason. Shawn was nice and put fair prices on items, but TROY did this just to hire "CROOKED ASHLEY".. I wonder how they can afford their nice cars they drive?......Former employees have told customers that TROY and ASHLEY have a nice racket going on manipulating the "financials", if you know what I mean, and have been doing so for quite awhile, and The Rescue Mission "BOARD", Administrators and CEO do NOT know about this!......Maybe, they should!!.......They both are getting RICH, while the people, who are supposed to be helped, and honest customers, get gouged and taken advantage of. Again, this is NOT the fair, nice thrift store of the past.....It is now just an overpriced, embarassing, disgusting and crooked business, using religion to fleece customers.........Go look at the prices for yourself! That was such a blessing to see so many meals that will help families in their time of need. We even had fun being in the warehouse, making up songs and figuring out how to ration this food if the walking dead decides to happen lol. Being able to give back without hearing others complain is so rewarding. You end up seeing how big your coworkers hearts are when sweating is not a thing to them because making these food bags is more important. We love the Virginia Foodbank employees and I want to personally thank Tracy for guiding us through our volunteer days!

At Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, there are several locations where you can volunteer. Just knowing that these families are being helped is a reward with in itself, and I appreciate organizations like this one. I'm going to make a commitment to volunteer more often like I used to in the past. It's been about a few days of volunteering, and I personally love the Young Terrace location. There's enough space to move around, and the guests (community) are grateful and very respectful. I've assisted with stocking and food distribution, but would love to see what's behind the scenes. Overall, if you want to give back to the community and feel amazing, check out a few locations, one may be real close to you. Sidenote: For those picking up food, there is a limit for each food category (canned goods, chicken, eggs, etc). You can have a bag full of produce. Quality is in good condition and some almost going bad, but you choose at your own discretion.

In those two hours I learned so much about the nonprofit world and the different organizations in our region. I love that you can hop on their website to easily connect with different organizations needing some support. Right now in COVID times it's a lot of meal packing and tutoring. They even have virtual opportunities for anyone wanting to volunteer without the exposure risks. They also have "skilled" volunteer opportunities for people who are looking to provide their professional services or areas of expertise to nonprofits in our communities. Throughout the year they offer different trainings and classes like the Board Bootcamp I attended. It's a great central location for anyone looking to give back and serve the community!

They are getting new items in daily. So try and go whenever. They had a bargain area where just about everything is dumped into bins and you have to sort through it all giving all things covid, I only went in the room and walked around. It made me anxious being in there. In the other room it was nicely organized, and not as rowdy. Prices were very reasonable. The staff was amazing. They were so polite. I was impressed by a male cashier while there. He cut himself with some needles on some fake flowers. Because of that he immediately left the cash register to properly clean himself up (it was not too bad).

I have decided to no longer donate to them, and I donate to Chkd Thrift, the DAV, or other thrifts. Every item is donated and they greedily forgot that the mission used to be affordable goods for all. I hope you all join me until they remember this. They only pay attention when they lose money and donations. Also, instead of donating the Tons Of things to goodwill, I started selling on fb marketplace. I made $900 the first month and make $10-70 a day. AND IM CHEAPER THAN GOODWILL, WHICH IS WHY IM MAKING SO MUCH. And when I tell others about this? Every single person said they are tired of the prices too. It's my goal to tell every person I can to take their goods, and sell them second hand - people appreciate getting Actual good prices on second hand products.
