I love this cat rescue- you can tell that they genuinely care about what they do, and I appreciate that immensely as an animal lover. We adopted two kitties from them around 2 years ago... Boots 2.0 and Harley (previously Isabelle). They are the sweetest cats in this world and I thank this rescue for introducing me to these two integral members of my family.

A huge shout out to Lisa and Alicia of Li'l Roar Cat Rescue!  This little guy has been coming to our porch for 2 or 3 months, so I took him to Lil Roar at Cypress Point to be scanned for a chip/tattoo, and checked to see if he had been neutered (he hadn't).  They did this in the midst of a very busy, stressful move to a larger space just a few doors down from where they are now.  I cannot recommend them enough!  If you're looking to adopt, foster, or just volunteer, they are the place to go!  I learned two new things from them. 1.  Feral cats do not meow.  And... 2.  Transport your pets in the backseat of your vehicle, rather than the cargo section of your SUV.  If you are in a serious accident, the cargo section is seldom checked by emergency personnel. Thank you to Li'l Roar!  You are worth your weight in gold!

At Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, there are several locations where you can volunteer. Just knowing that these families are being helped is a reward with in itself, and I appreciate organizations like this one. I'm going to make a commitment to volunteer more often like I used to in the past. It's been about a few days of volunteering, and I personally love the Young Terrace location. There's enough space to move around, and the guests (community) are grateful and very respectful. I've assisted with stocking and food distribution, but would love to see what's behind the scenes. Overall, if you want to give back to the community and feel amazing, check out a few locations, one may be real close to you. Sidenote: For those picking up food, there is a limit for each food category (canned goods, chicken, eggs, etc). You can have a bag full of produce. Quality is in good condition and some almost going bad, but you choose at your own discretion.

However, I got a group from my daughter's school to volunteer. Once again, everything from beginning to end was organized and social distancing protocols were in place. Highly recommend volunteering at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. It's fun, safe, and helps those less fortunate. Win win!

There's tons of space for remote work, community meetings, or just hanging out, and I noticed several groups using the open, airy cafe for coworking and conversation. The staff was incredibly friendly and made us feel right at home. I ordered the Monticello breakfast sandwich (with sausage, egg, cheddar, arugula, and a delicious aioli on an English muffin) and their Brown Sugar No. 05. A creative blend of brown sugar, rosemary, cinnamon, espresso, milk, and a hint of orange bitters. It was unique, refreshing, and seriously addicting! My friend went for the brown sugar latte and a blueberry bagel with cream cheese, which she loved. I was so interested in their nonprofit work, and after a quick website visit, I learned that Coalescence creates space for all kinds of community groups to gather and learn together, partnering locally and globally to lift up important work. Events, co-working, and shared community workspace are all available, with donors and volunteers supporting the mission so this resource keeps growing. If you're looking for great coffee, delicious food, or just a welcoming place to connect, this is it. Can't wait to come back!

Early November, I was walking into the building and I saw this company's van driving in; the windows were cracked and they were driving slow enough for me to hear the driver, an older African American woman, speaking to her employees in such a demeaning manner. I couldn't catch everything she was saying but essentially telling them they were doing a poor job/not executing tasks correctly. All the employees in the back of the van looked spooked/exhausted and honestly, it hurt my heart because I know a majority of these employees are civilians with disabilities. The woman had a poor attitude; the neck movements and hand gestures she was exhibiting, were incredibly aggressive. I was able to get the van plate number (VWV****) and I plan to communicate this to our base director as I don't believe this is a great representation of the company, and in that, shouldn't be affiliated with the military as we take equal opportunity and discrimination against personnel who have medical challenges very seriously . Such a disheartening thing to see.

The staff and volunteers absolutely do a fantastic job here, and the animals receive attention and love while they wait for their forever home. I followed them on Facebook for a while, watching longingly as adorable photo/bio combinations popped up in my feed, sometimes showing the Husband pups who were particularly sweet-sounding. It's all about breaking the resistance down slowly over time. Drip effect, folks. They've been indoctrinated without even realizing it and suddenly the whole family is in the car on their way to see a sweet Husky girl. Who of course is already adopted when you get there. And of course your son falls in love with a handsome pit bull who OF COURSE you take home instead. This is the cheapest animal I've ever adopted, and he came neutered, microchipped, tagged, vaccinated, and checked for food and toy aggression. Moreover, he's been the best friend for our son for a year now. Maybe they could have warned us that he's a bed hog, though!

I was told I was the third applicant and that I would be contacted if the first 2 applicants were no longer interested. I received an email that the cat was available and asked me if I was still interested. I sent 4 emails and left 1 voice message the same day. 2 days later I sent a fifth email and received a short reply that the cat was given to someone else. Should you apply for a cat or dog, sure, but expect the shelter to play some games with you. I was a longtime foster with NACC and have donated for years. I'll be taking my business elsewhere since they can't be decent enough to respect my time.
