I haven't been in a gym in years. Taking classes just bores me to death, big machines intimidates me and treadmills are useless. Finally, something that ignites a passion and after only a few workouts my stamina has improved and I crave for the next workout. Anthony is amazing. He pushes you and guides you. I love CKO! After reading all the raving reviews, I decided to try it for myself, and I have not been disappointed. You can try the first class for free, so you if you're considering this as an option, give it a shot! I knew nothing about kickboxing, and everyone at the gym (instructors and other people in the classes) have been great about giving me tips for my form, wrapping my hands, and other good to know information. There's always a variety of skill levels and fitness levels in all the classes, so don't feel like you can't go if you're not in shape. Just do it! What can I say, at our intro class, I crawled out of that place, from Leo, Anastanacia to Anthony they inspire and motivate you to do more and more and more. The gym has enough space to run, enough bags, they got weights, they got rowers, leg machines, everything you need to get back into shape. If you want to just hang out and cruise through your work out, feel free to go to another gym; but if you are serious about getting in shape, and showing off a toned body for the summer, this is the place for you. Almost broke my ankle with all the bumps in the mats--CKO needs to focus on the maintenance/upkeep of their gym. I see brooms/mops, but the mats are always gross and dusty. Sanitation CLEARLY is not CKO's strength here, considering that this is a gym where people are constantly sweating. I will say though, Coaches Srijan & Athanasia are AMAZING coaches and their classes are intense. I always make a conscious effort to always attend their classes. read more

CKO is an amazing kickboxing gym! The staff and the trainers are awesome and they really believe in doing right by their customers! I was looking for something specific and they were able to help me make that happen and I really appreciate it! The workouts are sweaty and tough, and I never regret going. The class and gym might seem intimidating, but don't get scared to try, the free trial is a great introduction! The class follows at HIIT format, cardio warm up, bag work/fight combos, more HIIT training and then a cool down. The great thing about this program is that if you're looking to see real results, the trainers never lets your heart rate slow down and your grinding the entire workout, which means you're going look and feel great! read more

Great place to relieve stress and get stronger. I did 3 months of cross fit before joining CKO, and after my first trial class, I knew right away that I had to switch my workout. Love love love!! My friend lost over 100 lbs doing cko for a few years and she inspired me to get back into shape with this workout. It is SO fun and a steal vs personal training. NYSC charges an arm and a leg for PT whereas CKO accomplishes this in group classes for a fraction of the cost. The people who go there are nice, the workouts are fun, challenging and there's great music. I burn over 650 calories in every Anthony class and he's just fun. I make myself go to his classes and am committed to the schedule. Get ready to work hard in Leo and Edgar's classes -they are awesome. Edgar is so encouraging and does a lot of circuit training like cross fit. Every instructor brings a different routine. You work here and you get results. The trainers encourage you and they care. That's the difference. You go at your own pace but pushed to be better. Anthony and Leo appreciate and care for your business and you got to support the locals! I'm a dancer, so I love movement. I hate gyms in general, just a lot of boring machines/free weights that you have to keep doing the sets, reps, blablabla, boring, boring, boring... I'm not professionally into dance, but when I am dancing, it's about 8 to 10 classes in a week. The problem with this in NYC, it gets very expensive to take that much of classes, by the end of the month. Some gyms are pretty cheap, but definitely not as fun as dance. But one day someone told me about CKO. And I decide to go for the trial class... I went for a 6:15am class on a Friday morning with Leo. Everything was so dynamic, new, intense and fun! I was so absurdly sore the next day, that the only thing I could think after was "I need to keep doing this! NOW!" The classes are amazing, the results are even better (what honestly has helped me to keep committed with all the weight lifting thing), and I can take unlimited classes for a super affordable price. Because of this place and its staff, I fell in love with kickboxing! I've been taking 4, 5 classes weekly, just waiting for them to add more classes I can go. read more

I joined CKO last summer, just after it opened in Astoria and it's a great place to work out. The trainers are all friendly and helpful - they genuinely want you to succeed in your fitness goals. The classes are tough and challenging - but you are encouraged to go at your own pace, if necessary. The trainers also foster a feeling of community, organizing an off-site holiday party in December. The gym itself is clean and it's an affordable way to get to get in shape. Overall, it's a great local gym with really great people! read more

This gym is not for weak. Be prepared for blood, sweat & tears!!! Pros: price is better than competing gyms (around $45 a month cheaper than ilovekickboxing Astoria),they use real boxing bags, there are a LOT of boxing bags so you never have to share with a partner, they have classes that work for just about any schedule (open 7 days a week), the trainers are all nice & give constructive criticism, the classes are also very tough ( it's harder than insanity/p90x - only come if you want to get a hardcore workout) so you will see results (I just started a week ago and have already lost 3lbs!) Cons: I wish they had a locker room & showers but everything else is so awesome that I'm still giving them 5 stars read more

This place is fantastic. I'm moving from Astoria in a month and this gym is the #1 thing I'll miss! I joined back in the winter because it was the closest gym to my apartment with positive reviews, and it's been nothing but a great experience. I had never even thrown a punch before trying the class, but found the introductory very helpful and informative. Within a few classes I had discovered that I love kickboxing. The instructors are great, they're all a little different so it's best to just attend an assortment of classes and then figure out which works best for the kind of workout you want. The most surprising thing about my classes was what a great group of people I was working out alongside! I've made a lot of friends here. Definitely check it out, even if you're just curious! The monthly fee seems a bit much at first, but compared to the cost of other gyms where you'll get this quality of a workout, it's 100% worth it. read more

Me and a couple friends found CKO through Groupon. Its the 3rd kickboxing studio we've trialed through Groupon and the the only one we've ended up buying memberships with! I have never enjoyed working out as much as I do with Anthony and Leo. This place is beyond awesome. Its such a personal experience, almost like family. They make it a point to remember your name the first time you walk in the door. Dont feel intimated to join, you can be at a beginner level or an athlete, either way you WILL sweat, be sore, and love/hate everyminute of the classes! And they are never too crowded as the space is huge. The music is awesome, Anthony's dance moves are a riot, and the way they motivate you to keep pushing in class is the reason I love this place... aside from losing weight and toning up of course :) From one day to the next you will never have the same workout. Amongst the few kickboxing gyms in Astoria CKO is my favorite! Their schedule is awesome! There are many times to choose from throughout the day which is great for a person like me with a crazy hectic schedule. I can make it here in the am or late night. Whichever class I make it to I am guranteed a kick ass workout. All the instructors will make sure you make the best out of your workout and will individually guide you through all your moves in order for you to master this sport. If I may brag.... I lost 12 lbs. In 7 weeks by coming here regularly and eating right. Now that summer is around the corner I'm getting my bikini bod ready!!! I can't say enough good things about this gym. From the fitness to the family style atmosphere, I've pretty much abandoned all of my other workouts and now just focus on kickboxing. Here's why: The workouts themselves are amazing. They change every class and all of the instructors have different styles so you're constantly engaging different muscles. Since I started back in November I've dropped seventeen pounds. The first class was really hard but after sticking with it for a while, I now fly through them. Doing four classes a week has become totally manageable where I used to be thrilled to make it through two. My legs and arms have become more toned. I've never in my life had defined abdominal muscles...and I still don't technically but they're peeking through! Seeing those kinds of results only makes me more motivated to keep going. The instructors are fantastic. The owners, Anthony and Leo are a lot of fun and seem truly invested in the progress of their members. It's also cool to see a lot of the same people showing up for class every day making it like a family type environment. Oh! And the music is awesome. In fact the music is key. I've been to spin classes where I can barely make it through because the tunes have been terrible but here, there's plenty of bass to keep you moving through the hour. I think what I love the most though is that I feel like I'm actually getting good at something. When I first joined, all I cared about was looking better but in the last couple of months I've noticed that I'm much faster and I hit the bag a lot harder. It definitely feels good to be stronger. I've been a disciple of the CKO Astoria crew's incredible gym for nearly two years and can I just say it is my favorite place to work out in Astoria. The gym itself is spacious and filled with awesome equipment beyond the 50 or so full size bags. There are rowing machines, tons of free weights and resistance bands, and even foam rollers for effective deep stretching. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Members can come in whenever they want for drop-in class, or even to use the free weights and stretch. I had an injury and when I couldn't do the full kickboxing classes, instructors Scottie, Leo and Anthony all helped me and guided me with different workouts I could do to stay in shape while nurturing my injury. There is a teacher and a class for every workout you could want. Amy does an amazing warm up and cool down, and works the mind as well with creative combos on and off the bag. Her infamous plank challenge was the reason my longest plank ever is a full 5 minutes! Scottie is wonderful as well, with heavy influences of Muay Thai and partner work in his classes. No two classes of his are the same, and it's definitely not for the feint of heart. If you want to be challenged, see real results, and get an incredible workout and practice with pad work, partner sparring, and extreme cardio, come to his classes! You won't regret it. As for Anthony, one of the owners, he is energetic, gregarious and wonderfully enthusiastic. He's the teacher that will encourage and push you to your limits when you want to quit. To him I say thank you! Leo, the other owner, is a serious instructor and I've never left his class without feeling completely pushed to my limits in the best way possible. I would definitely call his class advanced. I love coming to this studio and you will too! Everyone including the instructors and owners are friendly, compassionate, and have created a lovely community. Plus there are morning classes at 6:15am so you can work out before work! Fantastic, affordable gym that will have you sweating. Anthony and Leo are great people and CKO has become a part of my normal routine for the past 8 months. i would recommend purchasing your own boxing gloves, and if you have never done kickboxing before, stick with the classes, as it may be a bit daunting at first (although the instructors make you feel comfortable) the only possible downside would be if you are looking to get into sparring, this gym isnt for you. everyone else, CKO is perfect. read more

CKO Astoria is my second home. You will SWEAT, YOU WILL BE SORE, YOU WILL SEE RESULTS AND YOU WILL HAVE AN AWESOME TIME WHILE WORKING OUT. Every trainer is different..but they all motivate and push you to the limit. I had no prior kickboxing experience, so my first class, I settled for one of the punching bags in the back. By the second class, I was in the front..and I have gained upper and lower body STRENGHT , STAMINA, COORDINATION, AND FLEXIBILITY. The MUSIC selection is a BIG PLUS for me in particular because I come from a musical background, but I guarantee you, you will be pleased with not just great music, but with great workouts and motivated trainers. read more

I've taken classes with Scottie, Edgar and Anthony and they are all great. This is an intense class but definitely doable. The workout is a lot about cardio and strength training (squats, burpees, push-ups, ab exercises, jump rope, etc.) and they also incorporate a good amount of running. So it's not just bag work! Everyone here is super friendly and I've brought a number of friends here (from people who haven't worked out in ages to people who work out a good amount) and they've all agreed it's a challenging but fun workout. The first class is free (though you should either bring or pay for gloves), so you if you live in/near Astoria, you must try it out! :) read more

The only problem I have is that we aren't allowed to give six stars I have tested the waters in multiple workout programs. Weight lifting regimens at the gym, multiple rounds of Insanity/P90X/Asylum, cross training, etc. CKO is far and away the best workout I have ever experienced. The only program that comes close in terms of efficient results is the Insanity series (which is considered to be the hardest workout on the planet). Pros: Unbelievable workout, and I emphasize unbelievable. I went into CKO in good shape after doing years of Insanity, and my first go around was brutal (in a good way). My body was absolutely fried. CKO has a unique system that stands out from other traditional kickboxing gyms, by incorporating resistance exercises in the program. It really is the ultimate full body workout. MOST IMPORTANTLY- It's fun, and there is a certain family element that you feel here because of the trainers. You recognize everybody in the class (if you go at the same time every day), and you get comfortable real quick, That is what gets people addicted. There is nothing worse than busting your you know what day in and day out when the workout is stagnant. It is an hour of different moves and combinations on a heavybag. And to my fellow boxing/Muay Thai aficionados out there- working a heavybag is one of the best workouts you could possibly do. The trainers are incredible. They find a healthy balance between motivating, and understanding your skill level. There is also a competitive nature that exists in terms of keeping up. I love that. The way the workouts are set up makes you want to beat the best person in the class in terms of stamina. Cons: I would like to see 6:15am classes Monday-Friday. Currently they offer early classes Mon, Wed, and Friday- but i would like to go more times throughout the week, and I always workout in the morning. They just added the Monday 6:15am so i'm sure we'll see it Mon-Fri eventually Tip: If you pack a good punch, buy 16-20 oz gloves. Don't use MMA gloves because your hands will take a beating. Even if you use wraps, if you have a heavy punch- they wont protect your knuckles as much as you think. Also, it wouldn't be a bad idea to invest in some Muay Thai shin guards. If you don't have good shin conditioning, your shin may bruise up or get sore halfway through the workout. Overall- Lets put it this way- I commute from lower Manhattan every day to come here (50 mins door to door if i have good luck with train arrivals). I go Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday- and no joke- the other days of the week when i don't go to CKO, I don't feel myself that day. This place gets an A+ in my book read more
