I'm new to CrossFit and initially tried CDX through ClassPass to explore whether it was the right fit for me. I ultimately decided to become an official member for two key reasons: The Community - From the very beginning, I felt welcomed and included, even as a non-member. Several members went out of their way to work out with me, guide me, and show me the ropes over the first few months. The Training - I've always enjoyed a good challenge, and CrossFit was something I'd been wanting to try. While it initially seemed intimidating, I realized that with an open mind, patience, and a willingness to learn, the journey becomes both rewarding and enjoyable. My advice? Take your time, ask questions, focus on proper technique, and most importantly, embrace the journey. Nothing worth achieving comes without determination and dedication. Crossfit Dynamix, I heart you! You can read other reviews and learn about the free foundations classes. I want to share the "vibe" with you. While other boxes feel competitive, Dynamix feels like a family. While other boxes have trainers that think they are God's gift to Crossfit, Dynamix trainers don't take themselves seriously, they are helpful, light-hearted and... they actually ARE God's gift to Crossfit! Dynamix is building a reputation for itself - trainers place high, if not first in all categories, at all the competitions they enter. But the vibe remains warm & welcoming, never pretentious or judgemental. Members of all skill levels can be found here. And the box holds seasonal mixer events, giving us all an opportunity to get to know each other (or not... these are, of course, optional for those of us who just want to get in & get out). This place is so much more than a gym. Last year due to unfortunate circumstances I had to move 3 times, but stayed in the same area because I refused to give up Dynamix. At this box every PR is praised and every member matters no matter your strength or experience. Not to mention our coaching is both unmatched and known worldwide. I came here since I bought a Groupon for a boxing classes. I took the foundation class since its a requirement and it was great. Our coach Nick was awesome, he was very informative and helpful. Almost everyone in the class was in great shape except a few of us. He never made me feel bad for not being in great shape as the others and pushed everyone to their specific limits. I know I got an amazing workout since my body is so sore that I cant really move lol I cant wait to continue coming and getting a great work out. read more

Love this box. I've been picking up all the Groupon deals for CrossFit memberships and out of all that I've been to, this is the one that stands out among the rest. The gym is huge, they have great equipment, it's clean and the coaches are a perfect mix of tough and kind at the same time. Everyone here has been so nice and I find that working out in this type of atmosphere works better for me personally, than going into a gym like Lucille Roberts or Bally's, doing stuff alone, fighting for equipment, etc. Going to my first class I was very intimidated and a bit scared. Everyone looked like such a beast and they all knew exactly what they were doing. Very soon into the first class it was clear that my "newbie" status didn't even matter. Everyone was encouraging, helpful with proper form, and exercises can be modified to your skill. I've noticed a very real difference in my muscle tone since starting CrossFit. I'm stronger, I have more energy, and it's so amazing to see how my skill has grown from day 1 until now. The best part about this gym is that even though the classes are very large, the coaches make sure to spend one on one time with EVERYONE during skill time and during the WOD. Last class I was having trouble with squats b/c of my ankle inflexibility and Justin noticed this. He spent a bit of time after the class speaking with me and showing me stretches I should be doing for both hip and ankle flexibility. I thought it was really nice that he didn't immediately run off to work with the next class coming in. It has been just about a year since a mistake from one of the instructors costed me a really bad friction burn from the rope climbing which ended up infected and leaving a huge scar. (I know you guys may be thinking a scar is not a big deal, but because of a mistake from the instructor, I now have a scar that took months of wound care). You can read exactly what happened in the picture I've attached of the email I wrote to the owners. I contacted the owners about this issue in September 2016. They assured me someone will contact me back as soon as they figure out what the best way to handle the situation is. A few weeks later I called them back only to have them say the same thing. It was weeks to months of them putting this off, maybe because they would assume I would just forget about it or thought it was worthless to deal with? I had great workouts at Dynamix and all the staff members are super accommodating, but I'm really unhappy about the way the owners handled this situation. I know accidents happen and sometimes even if my signing a waiver deems them away from any responsibility, there are still times that it is their fault and they need to handle it appropriately. I tried to forget about the issue and move on, but everytime I think about it, I'm reminded of how angry I was/am at the fact that the owners completely ignored me. Love this place! Great people, the trainers are extremely knowledgeable of the mechanics and proper progression when teaching new movements. The place is well equipped and well kept. The app used to sign up for classes and keep track of results is very user friendly. This crossfit box is going beyond industry standards to create an amazing sense of community, hard work and team spirit. And not to say, that it's just a block away from Singlecut Beersmiths, perfect for a few awesome beers after the workout. Gotta stay hydrated, right?!? I can't say enough good things about this box. If Crossfit is already your thing, or you're looking to try it out, I can't imagine a better place to do it. The trainers here are incredible. The Fundamentals class took a lot of the intimidation out of Crossfit for me, and made it seem like something I could attempt to do! I'd done plenty of strength training before, but I'd never used barbells before coming here (only dumbbells), and moves like Power Cleans were completely foreign to me. The idea of even attempting handstand push-ups is comical, but they still had me upside-down training my way there so I could someday work up to it. Every workout showed me that I'm stronger than I thought I was, and I can push myself harder. There is zero judgement at this box. Nobody really cares how much or how little weight anyone else is lifting; everyone knows that each person is pushing themselves and that creates an awesome team-spirit vibe. All of the trainers here are so encouraging and wonderful- they make sure you have great form, give a lot of personal attention, and make sure you're pushing yourself. Crossfit isn't always "fun," it hurts, but the nice people here will keep you coming back. I've never felt anything less than awesome after a WOD (well, after a few minutes of recovery!). Going to dynamix is the best thing you can do for your life seriously! I was apprehensive about starting crossfit because of a serious lower back injury few years ago but I met Justin the owner and he was so encouraging so I had to give it a try!! When I first went to dynamix early this year in January the energy of the people and the space is unlike any place I've ever been. The people are cheering everyone on & the excitement was palpable. So they offer free foundation classes which is awesome so you learn the important basics so you can step in a class and understand what is going on. They are very meticulous and make sure that everyone has all the movements and positions correct. This put all my worries at ease and I felt like I could actually tackle the workout of the day (WOD). The members of Dynamix are amazing and contribute to how awesome this place is! Everyone is personable and awesome to be around which most places and gyms can't say. This is truly a community and anyone who is new to the area or want to find an awesome community look no further! The COACHES here are all amazing! I love how encouraging they are and they are amazing teachers and with their help I started to get better each and every day I came in. I completed my 40th WOD today! I can't say enough good things about this place, everyone is amazing, so motivating. I'll never step foot in a regular gym ever again! Yes, it's hard.. WOW. Words cannot describe how I feel other than.. I feel like I deserve to eat anything and everything today. I had a disappointing first experience (class was cancelled without notification) but I'm very happy I took another chance on it. I've had a growing interest in boxing and have only taken boxing boutique classes in Manhattan (box and flow and Title Boxing). Both studios have been great BUT dynamix boxing with Nick is on a different level. NOT for the faint of heart. You should at least have some basic fitness background before you attempt this class. First of all, it is a 90 minute class so be prepared for an endurance workout. Second, it is a jammed packed with various activities ranging from cardio, strength training, and core work. We started off with jump roping, did some tabata strength training with the TRX/ball slams/pushups, and went into shadow boxing/punching bag/mitt work. We finished it off with another round of strength training with the kettlebell. By the time we finished I was just happy I made it through the entire 90 minutes. Nick just came back from an injury but he was upbeat, encouraging, and really focused on technique. The intensity rivals my other favorite gym, Trooper Fitness. I'll definitely be back!! PS. If you book a class during a holiday I would call the gym to make sure it is still going on. read more

This isn't a review of the CrossFit aspects of Crossfit Dynamix but rather the boxing and kick boxing classes. But just a quick comment on the Crossfit aspect, I know some of the trainers there and they have trained legit competitors, athletes and people. I've met a ton of people there who have loved the training and have had complete transformations physically. But on to the boxing and kick boxing classes. Having trained with the head trainer Nick not only at CrossFit Dynamix but at other gyms - he's incredible as a coach and as a trainer. With two decades of experience in various martial arts including kick boxing and boxing, Nick is able to take new blood and mold them into competent boxers or kick boxers. He actually takes the time to refine and tweak exercises to help people learn the basics and eventually advanced moves in boxing and kick boxing. If you've already trained for years such as myself? Nick takes the time to help you develop and tighten up your basics as well as enhance techniques and skills that you've already brought to the table. He allows you to mold yourself as a fighter. And the kicker? He's also a highly experienced trainer and CrossFit trainer as well. The kind of conditioning that he puts you through is just nutty. All sorts of core, explosive, plyo, functional strength exercises will absolutely increase the kind of power and speed you'll be using during boxing and kick boxing. Lastly, he's really created a great community with the students allowing them to enjoy watching fights locally. It's a fantastic program and most importantly, fun. read more

Not good if you are beginner. Joined in December because I really wanted to get into CrossFit to supplement my marathon training. I signed up, did the entire month of January and injured myself doing snatches. I can run 35-40 miles per week with no problem, but since I am new to lifting and those movements and my upper body isn't as strong...I fell on my butt on my first try and injured my wrists. Both. I was holding to the bar and didn't let go and the result of the jerk motion was pain for weeks. I did mention to the 7am Tuesday coach about maybe private lessons that day but the pain a few hours later made me skip class. Later I realized that I shouldn't have had to be doing such lifting moves with weights after just a month of twice a week classes. I dealt with the pain for a few weeks but as far as coming back to class:. One week became two, two became a month and just kept running. The pain in my wrists went away and just focused on doing push-ups to get stronger and maybe come back. I wish I had since I was making the monthly payments and loved the idea of supporting a local business as I live half a mile away. But I just lost interest. What eventually made me realize that coming back wasn't a good idea after all was the fact I never got a call from the gym to see if there was a problem with me not showing up. The gym was just happy to collect my dues every month...I was a bit shocked at that since the 7am class is such a tiny group. You would think that the coach would notice your absence right? I stopped the other day to take the auto renew off my account and cut my losses. I understand it's a 6 month contract and I made my payments. Looking forward to not making them anymore. Look, I understand that it's hard to give personalized training to a random person that joins a gym...I get it. It just stings a bit as I was really committed to going Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7am and get stronger. I just wish I had been a bit more reluctant to trying to lift weights that I clearly wasn't ready for. I figured the coach takes a look at me and could see if I could or not. But after me falling in my ass and not even helped back up, everything felt dumb for me. I normally wouldn't write a negative review...And just eat the loss and keep it moving, but if you are new to this type of training maybe my negative experience can be helpful. Do know what you are capable of. Do say no if you are not comfortable or feel safe doing a workout and do not expect the trainers to personalize any training for your needs. You are on your own once you sign that waiver...And they won't care if you show up or not. I really liked the group I trained with that month I attended. Wish it had worked out. read more

Awesome place to come have a great work out and get your ass kicked for an hour!! Very motivating environment that always makes you work out harder and become better every class. The only downside has been the extreme heat over the summer in the gym. It gets so HOT in there its obnoxious. It makes for a harder work out which will benefit you overall but sometimes its too much. Despite the HEAT I still love going to this CF and look forward to doing the WOD there tonight !! read more

Ashley is my trainer! I adore her. She has taken the time to get to know me and works specifically on my goals. She works me hard and pushes me like no one else can. She takes my training very seriously. I can now run miles! When I first started in June, I had the treadmill at 3.5 for 5 mins and I was exhausted. I now run 25 to 30 mins at 4.8. We also do tough circuits like dead lifts, and wall balls and strict press and more. I'm getting stronger and feel better every day! Thanks Ash! Upon moving to Astoria I tried out 3 different Crossfit gyms in the area. They were all good, but Crossfit Dynmanix was GREAT! They really stood out for me. What struck me first was how friendly and enthusiastic the trainers were when I showed up. During the classes the staff seem to really care about everyone and take time to help and assist with personal goals of the members at all levels. Classes are in nice small groups, where you really get to know everyone. Dynamix has recently moved to a new location (the photos here on yelp are of the old location), the new place is HUGE. Lots of space for the classes... plenty of pullup bars, gymnastic rings, and space for all the WODs. Also, its on a quiet street, so workouts with running are nice. If you've never tried crossfit before, this is a great place to start, especially with free trial foundation classes. I recently trained with Ashley. Don't underestimate her; she will kick your butt! She is a very understanding and dedicated trainer. Ashley is very knowledgeable and committed to her craft, it isn't hard to tell. There are things that she taught me that I can do that I never thought I was capable of achieving. Justin and the other trainers at the gym are also great. They were always around to help and offer encouraging words. They always gave me advice and re-enforcement. I love the "one-on-one" aspect of the training. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned vet ready to step to the next level, this is the place for you. My wife also trained with Ashley. I never really had the opportunity of fully being a part of the gym (took the foundations classes) however the professionalism and seriousness of the coaches is what makes them the best crossfit gym I went to in NYC. The atmosphere alone screams hard work, push and prevail. Every single person there are like-minded individuals which is the key to their success. From the coaches to the trainees, they're all there to push each other in, not only their personal goals but also each other's goals as well. I decided to personally train with Joel. He is awesome i would have loved to stay and train more with him since i bought purchased a pack of 12 sessions. I couldn't continue going because I lost my job. I will go back once I get that fixed though. I came at nights and weekends and the atmosphere is very motivating because the people are clapping all around saying yea you can do it!!! The "head honcho" is Justin :) he's very professional too. Crossfit is no joke, the workouts are intense and you will definitely get what you put into it. Dynamix offers 3 free Foundations classes which involves learning how to do all the exercises you will encounter in a Crossfit class. You will need 3 more Foundations classes to learn everything, but the extra 3 classes are $99, unless you sign up for membership, in which case it's waived. Classes are not necessarily one hour, it can be shorter depending on how long it takes for you to complete the WOD (Workout of the Day). One thing I have to commend every trainer (and member) here for is the incredibly supportive, positive, you-can-do-it attitude. I don't know how people can maintain such an attitude all the time everyday, but you'll get that here. It's definitely intimidating to be surrounded mostly by people who are ridiculously fit, but there are also some people who find doing a single squat challenging. At Dynamix, that's 1000% okay and there's no judgement about that kind of thing. Seriously. It's also a kind of place you shouldn't judge one's strength based on their physique, because I sure as hell was in awe when women who didn't necessarily look "fit" could lift tons more weight that I could without a problem. Awesome. The workout space is kind of small, depending on how many people show up for a class, but there's enough room to do the exercises. There's a 2nd floor studio where boxing and yoga take place, and it looks quite nice/newly renovated. There are Paleo challenges in which people participate in the paleo diet for 30 days, combined with exercise. A trainer will measure your percent body fat before and after and show you how much you've lost, how much muscle you gained, etc. They even email you a handy guide to help you along the way. **IMPORTANT** Why am I subtracting a star for such a seemingly great place? I had a billing "situation." I signed up for 3 months and assumed that at the end of the three months I would not continue to be billed, so I stopped going. Unfortunately, I continued to be charged and when I noticed this, they were not able to refund the additional two months' worth of charges of $125 each. I was told that in the contract, there was a section stating you needed to inform Dynamix 30 days in advance if you wished to cancel membership. Do we all read every line of every contract we sign? No, probably not. So I will take the blame for not noticing this one if it was there. Ideally, I would have appreciated if it was pointed out in particular when signing up, because that's a detail I wouldn't forget. Another option would have been an opportunity to go back for classes for the two months worth of charges instead of just biting the bullet. In my mind, it sucks to lose a member over something annoying like membership fees. While I am bitter about losing $250, I can't deny this is a good gym, and as long as you keep your billing situation sorted out straight away, you shouldn't have any problems here. read more

I have been training with Justin for over 3 years now. Every once in a while after a particularly difficult work out he comments, "Wow.. you're a completely different person." It's true. At some gyms, you get a charge on your credit card, and for the most part, you're on your own. Usually, at those kinds of places, you'll stand around after a set, maybe chat it up for a few minutes, drink water and people watch. The staff at those places are pretty hands off because they don't want to be responsible for causing an injury by encouraging you to go hard at your workout. From my experience, I'd go to the gym and wonder why I didn't look like Captain America after six months. Crossfit Dynamix is not that kind of place--Ok, yes, they do charge your credit card, but other than that, it's completely different. First, this place gives you a serious workout every single time--no slouching ever--and I love it. Second, the members/athletes are respectful and supportive, and dare I say, a community. Soon that stranger in your foundations class will be the person spotting you during squats or bench presses. Yes, you have to take three free foundations classes before you begin--so you feel confident before your first actual workout. The coaches are engaging, knowledgeable and professional, and somehow, they remember most people's names. I've been at Crossfit Dynamix for a little over six months, and I think I'm actually starting to look like Captain America--Ok, maybe not--but I feel like Captain America. read more

I started training with Justin (head trainer/owner) about a year before he branched out onto his own and opened this gym up. He is a fantastic trainer and really knows what he's doing. The trainers he has with him here are also all excellent, knowledgeable, and dedicated people, though I can not personally attest to what their training styles are like since I've only ever worked with Justin. If you want to do Crossfit style stuff (and full on Crossfit classes someday soon I imagine) this is the place, if you want to learn strict barbell weight lifting and olympic weight lifting this is the place, if you just want to get your ass kicked for an hour and feel good about it after this is definitely the place. They are friendly, and laid back, and even though there's plenty of hardcore gym activity here there's no attitude or intimidation, just encouragement and usually a lot of laughs. read more

So, my trainer is Justin and let me tell you that he is INCREDIBLE. First of all, after working with Justin, I now have no problem when it comes to being motivated. He is patient, but tough and can pinpoint exactly what I need to do in order to reach my fitness goals. The entire gym is fantastic. The exposed brick and windows in the back and front make for a really cool vibe and I feel like I'm at an exclusive gym in Manhattan because all the trainers are so dedicated and RIPPED. Dynamix is the best gym I have been too. Its not fancy, you're not gonna find a posh locker room with towels waiting for you, there is no smoothie bar but there is TONS of results. If every time a client yelps / grunts from excruciating pain an angel gets wings; DYNAMIX is putting a lot of angels in flight. (smile) Seriously, if you are looking for a challenge and have reached a point where you need something more engaging than conventional strength training, this is definitely the place for you. This is not a globo gym! You WILL NOT be greeted by a "sparkly" 18 year old at the front desk, sold packages you may or may not need because someone needs to make their quota of the month or receive a complimentary tee with gym logo and mint tucked in your locker. What you WILL receive instead is a great communal vibe in a personal setting with knowledgeable, certified, trainers. The work is hard but, has been achievable with the guidance I have received. An added plus is that I don't just feel stronger physically but mentally. And it's often the highlight of a stressful day. Justin sets the tone - the workouts are focused, efficient and no nonsense. If you are looking for real deal kickboxing/boxing training, this is the place! I have trained in martial arts and boxing/kickboxing for over 20 years and am very picky where I choose to go. Gym style cardio kickboxing classes just don't cut it for me because the intensity and level of instruction are just not there. Nick is a highly trained martial artist and fighter and his inclusion of cross fit style conditioning make this place top notch. He knows how to teach technique which is very important, he knows how to change it up to make every class interesting and can cater to all experience levels in class-which is not always the case in other places. I moved to Astoria over the summer and decided to give Crossfit a shot. I popped in to check out Crossfit Dynamix and knew it was the place for me. Justin and Ashley talked me thru the gym and the classes. Told me about Foundations and I was off. I knocked out Foundations in a couple of weeks and tried to get in as much as possible. Recommend the unlimited membership because you can come during no class times and work on technique and the trainers are willing to watch you and make sure you're doing everything properly.
