First time here today. The scone was great and so was the Devonshire cream and the lemon curd (though the closest I've ever been to Devonshire was probably Boston, so what do I know?) The coffee drinks all seem to have Irish-themed names even if they're pretty much a meil or whatever. My wife had one, I had another. Kind of sweet but not excessively so. Nice comfy space downstairs, hard chairs up. I'll update if I get back to try the brewed coffee but it is a bit outside my usual sortie radius. Seems like a nice place with perhaps a bit of an emphasis on the woo woo decor. Since it's next door to a yoga studio, I imagine they know their audience, but it doesn't hurt the coffee. read more

The reasons I love this coffee shop are numerous, but it all can essentially boil down to the fact that this shop is overwhelmingly comfortable & kind. I have never had anything less than a stellar interaction with the staff and even my fellow customers. The ambiance is cozy and cute, but not cloyingly so. It just feels welcoming. But all the ambiance in the world can't save a place with awful coffee-- but of course, this is not the case at Claddagh. Every drink I've tried, from the brewed dark roasts, to americanos, to specialty sweet drinks, all have been excellent. Their espresso is strong & dark, but never bitter. There are seats and tables for couples and larger parties. The more comfortable and cozy couches are found in the lower level. A chalkboard wall features all the popular coffee drinks. The 10-ounce cappuccino, frothy and warm in a cup, got crafted very quickly. It tasted good, retaining its heat. The station for sweeteners and add-ons is placed in a convenient spot, out of the way of the pick-up area. In addition to beverages, sandwiches, both breakfast and lunch, fill the left side of the chalkboard. There are a number of vegetarian options. I will come back to try them. read more

Claddagh is my choice for the last 3(?) years; on West 7th and the wee one on Selby, they seldom disappoint. The feel of home and comfort hit me when walking through the doors of Claddagh Coffee. I have been wanting to try this place out for awhile and it so happened I had a meeting nearby that gave me the opportunity to try it out. I came around 9am and the place was packed. I was concerned I would not get a table and at first there were none so at the counter. Eventually my friend came and we were fortunate enough that at that moment someone was getting up to leave and we swooped on their table. There are two floors and being in a wheelchair I can only be on the one level so that limited our choices. Downstairs as you saw in the pictures has the couches. On the main floor there are table for 2 along the wall and windows and then 2 larger round tables in the middle. It would be a bit tight for me to navigate between tables in my chair but we were lucky enough to get a round table on the edge so I did not block anyone's way. The interior design was dark wood colors and the menu written on the wall were all celtic font. In the morning, the sun shines right into the window and hits the tables so facing the window can hurt the eyes. For coffee, I took a lot of time deciding but I chose the black and tan. It was basically close to a miel (what I commonly order) which is a honey and cinnamon latte. I am bummed I did not try their lavender though because all the syrups here are home made. #regrets. Before my meeting I wanted to get something to eat, so I had the half grilled cheese and tomato soup. It was classic and was a perfect lunch combo for that day icy day. I would definitely come back here to study again someday if someone wanted too. I would be concerned with the crowd, but that has not stopped me from waiting a little bit for the right table before. Well, what can I say? I followed Yelp's reviews 4 miles to this coffee shop for a hot brew. Compliments first: the place is a cute old storefront. The hostess is very sweet. First shock, I like coffee. Not coffee-tinted water. They don't serve dark roast coffee. Their medium roast was hot; that's all. The hostess tried hard to make a darker, flavorful coffee for me by making an Americano from their espresso. Not a success. Maybe 20% of the flavor of a Louisiana Community Coffee... it was hot, though. My review may be based on my own culture spoiling me. Based upon the food I've tasted in this area, their coffee may suit local tastes. If you're a coffee aficionado, you may share my disappointment. One interesting experiential comment; I've never had to wear a down jacket, scarf and hat inside while I drank coffee before. But, alas, I ain't in New Orleans today. read more

For three weeks, I served as a dog-sitter at a house right off of 7th and only two blocks from Claddagh. After this morning, I can honestly say that my biggest regret of temporarily living in Saint Paul was not knowing about this quaint and charming coffee shop. When I walked in to meet my friend James (thanks for the recommendation homie), I was struck by how beautiful it was inside. The Irish colored chalk menu and memorabilia, classy art, as well as the wood floors and tables gave a coffee shop vibe. This coffee shop attracts all kinds of people from locals to professionals. I asked the friendly barista what to get, who immediately relayed my question to the owner. She recommended one of her favorites: a chocolate mocha infused with salted caramel. She also noted that all the syrups are made in-house. After only waiting for a couple minutes, my immediate reaction was that the coffee was not strong enough. However, that salted caramel definitely stopped my mind and lips from complaining. Even though I was only there for an hour, I plan to return to try other things on the menu and get some work done. read more

Like a cheated on spouse, I'm the last to know about this place, and I'm in Summit Hill. I met Jon and John for a special invite of the new CM. We three had quite the conversation in just 1 hour, we found out at 5 they close. We nibbled on a very rich bar. I'm in it for the hot chocolate, and they even have the decency to ask you what temp you like. It came out hot hot and delicious. They offer water, and I made the suggestion to Patrick, the manager to start carrying Crystal Canyon or some kind of filtered RO water that's tasty to match the rest of the awesomeness. I just enjoy a good cup of coffee, not fancy, not double triple bunch of bs with crazy patterns in the soy foam, just a good damn drip. Came in here mid-morning on St. Patrick's Day as part of my personal Irish celebrations. I got a Black & Tan which, for coffee, is a latte with honey and cinnamon. I loved the inside and the location was great. It had a very cozy pub feeling and I love that they serve actual food as well, not just muffins in a case. Before coming and then upon walking in, I had pretty high hopes. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed when it came to both prices and flavour. A 16oz to go was over $5 and I found it to be watery - not even milky, just little to no flavour at all. I at least expected to taste the honey, but maybe the cinnamon was overpowering everything else. I didn't finish it all which is pretty rare for me. I can only assume all the 5-star praise comes from people who had the food or don't like a strong flavoured coffee drink. Also, the outdoor seating was still chained up even though I would have gladly sat outside. Surely Irish Minnesotans are a heartier bunch than to avoid being outside on a 40F sunny day. Super disappointed, but I would still come back to try something else if I'm in the area again. read more

I haven't reviewed this place yet because I am selfish and don't want others knowing about how incredible this place truly is. This is my new favorite coffee shop and meets all of my criteria and unrealistic standards for a place I could comfortably socialize and even work at for long periods of time. Food is delicious, coffee is incredible, ambiance/decor is adorable (I might be biased because of my Irish heritage...but it is really cute), prices are reasonable and most importantly, its CLEAN! I often will go here if I need to change up my work scene and elect to work out of the office and the extremely courteous and pleasant workers are constantly working and cleaning to maintain the cozy, clean and comfy atmosphere. It's also centrally located on West 7th, which is easy to get to no matter where you are coming from in my opinion. Will make this a regular weekly stop! read more

The best coffee shop on West 7th Street. As good as it gets short of roasting their own beans. The Claddagh Brew blend is a stunningly flavorful, high end cup of coffee. Others can attest to their skill at the espresso machine. I can attest to the uncompromising standards of their plain, black coffee. The ambience is perfect, the free meeting room downstairs is a neighborhood asset, the small food selection is on-point, and the art on the walls is usually interesting to contemplate. I have been to Claddagh Coffee twice - once for breakfast and once for lunch. In my experience Claddagh, has several positives and one enormous negative. Let's talk about what they do well first. First off, the food and coffee is good. I really enjoyed the veggie breakfast panini, and the Salami Dubliner Drizzle (salami, Dubliner cheddar and baguette drizzled with a balsamic reduction and served with olives) was right up my alley. My Americano was well made (you would be surprised how often baristas burn the espresso), and I really enjoyed their list of specialty drinks. I chose the Dropkick Murphy, which is iced espresso, coke and half and half. Tasted much better than it sounds. They also carry a lot of locally produced options like scones from Bars Bakery and Joia Soda, and I really like to support shops that support others in the community. Secondly, the place is neat and big. It's very clean with plenty of tables and even more in their basement. I hate coffee shops that don't have the room to support their clientele, but Claddagh has plenty. Finally, I really enjoyed the staff and the clientele. Claddagh Coffee is a neighborhood café complete with regulars from the neighborhood. It was easy to see that the regulars enjoy the staff just as much as they enjoy the coffee. Both times I was in, I saw the owner chatting with customers. Claddagh Coffee has a very welcoming vibe. With all this being said, I did find one negative in my experiences at Claddagh Coffee and it is a big one for me. They are very inefficient and unorganized. Both times I have been in, it has been obvious that they do not have a system for taking care of customer orders- or if they have one, they don't use it. No one seems to know what their role is behind the counter, and that results in confusion. On the morning I stopped in for breakfast, I had a little over a half hour to grab a bite before I had to drive into work. By the time I placed my order, it was evident I would have to get it to go and eat in the car. The staff was overwhelmed by a surge or 8 customers; yes, I said 8 not 18. They had no idea how to handle it or who was doing what. The cashier kept ringing orders even though the first person had not gotten his coffee and the tickets kept stacking up. After placing my order I waited 12 minutes to get my drinks. If I had not asked about my sandwich, I may never had gotten it. It had been lost in the shuffle. The staff jumps from station to station, so no ones knows what has been done and what needs to be done. No organization. The staff was very apologetic, but never the less I was scarfing my panini in the car rather than sitting and enjoying my breakfast. I was hoping that this was not a common occurrence, but it was obvious that the regulars were accustomed to waiting. Another customer and myself, the only ones that did not know the owner, were the only ones put off by the wait. Not wanting one experience to taint my view, I decided to try Claddagh for lunch. This time my order was taken quickly and my food came out quickly as well. Off to a good start, but as I sat there I saw the same things start to happen to other customers. As the staff jumped around, a customer's sandwich was delayed; then they forgot to pour another customer's cup of coffee. A cup of brewed coffee is the most basic task at a cafe, and should be the first thing done. I sincerely hope that Claddagh Coffee figures out some type of system to ensure that customers get what they order in a timely fashion. In the long run, it will not matter how good the food is, how friendly the staff is, or how creative the drinks are if the service is questionable. If I need to get in and out quickly I will be heading to the Dunn Bro's down the street, but if have extra time and a little patience you will see me at Claddagh. read more

Rustic, sand-blasted brick walls, wood floors, tin ceilings, nice chandeliers and track lights, sturdy wood chairs and tables, and an Irish Celtic theme throughout. Downstairs, there's a lounge area with a couple couches and also a large conference-type table. Another reviewer here on Yelp complained, "around a certain time of day, it seems like older teenagers start hanging out at the counter. I am assuming they might be related to the owner somehow but they are pretty noisy and disrespectful and makes it hard to enjoy the place." I noticed this too, on my first visit. I thought they may have all been working but it seemed unbalanced to have that much staff working on the Friday evening I was there. Then I figured out they must have been friends of friends working, and they were just keeping themselves company. But it was a slightly distracting. I am a barista myself and typically look for a few important details when visiting local coffee shops. Firstly, the employees at Claddagh are very personable, informative and even make an effort to remember your name as you walk in the door. The coffee here is just delicious! I usually get the Black and Tan (Iced and Hot), but it seems that most of their drinks really highlight the flavor of the coffee itself. Most importantly, the atmosphere is very unique! The Irish flare sets it apart from the rest! There's even a quiet and relaxing seating area downstairs if your goal is to find a spot to study or meet. Plus their couches are worthy of falling asleep in! I love this location and even drive 20 minutes every Sunday to enjoy Claddagh Coffee! I highly recommend it! read more

I'm on the hunt for the best South Minneapolis/Saint Paul coffee shop to work remotely from. Loved this coffee shop! They have a unique atmosphere, with an Irish theme. The inside reminds you of a dark, Irish pub, tucked back in a brick building with dark wood features and exposed brick walls. They have a great selection of teas, coffee and other espresso drinks that all have a bit of a twist to incorporate the Irish theme. We ordered the iced berry black tea and claddagh coffee drink that was similar to a mocha with Irish creme. We also enjoyed the bacon-cheddar breakfast sliders and a large slice of coffee cake. I will definitely be stopping back in here for a cozy coffee shop setting. read more

Very cool place. The food was great, the coffee and tea DELICIOUS, and the service very good. Atmosphere - if you like Celtic design, this place is perfect for you. The exposed brick and dark wood tones really set the scene like a coffee shop in Dublin. The service was also very good. The people at the cash register were friendly and the waiter who brought our food was probably one of the happiest people I've ever had wait for me. Very nice. Food and Drink - I decided to go with the veggie breakfast panini and their signature, family recipe Chai tea latte and my wife went with the turkey and bacon panini and a cinnamon spice latte. Mmmm MMMMM they were delicious. The breakfast panini had a really nice blend of egg, cheese and pesto. Not too cheesy, not overbearingly pesto-y. The Chai tea was probably one of the best I've had with a little bite from the cinnamon that went a long way to enhance the flavor of the tea. I can't speak as much about the turkey panini since I didn't get to taste it as much, but the bite I did have was really good, and my wife's latte was also very good. Price - the price was a bit more than what I was expecting for a a coffee shop ($8.95 for the panini where I expected maybe $6 or so) but the portions made up for the price. I was so excited when this place came to the neighborhood turning the old adult video store into a beautiful coffee shop, however, I've been pretty disappointed. Cons: 1. The espresso drinks are quite awful (flavored/unique) .... Americano is ok but the mochas are dreadful. I live a block away and have ordered one about 15 times because I keep saying *ok. Maybe today it will be good*. It's always a regrettable waste of 6 bucks. 2. The staff is always so grumpy! 3. Prices are way too high. 4. The refuse to pay a decent wage/compensation to their musicians. They don't even pay them with a free meal. Pros: The customers are great and the ambiance is very nice. Also the DIY drip pots are very fun and you can tell that they are trying to make the place fun and interesting. ....they just see to be off the mark a bit.
