I have been very disappointed with our experience at the YMCA summer camp. Over the course of the summer, there have been multiple incidents involving my child that have left me questioning whether the staff is properly trained to work with children, especially when behaviors or conflicts arise. Many of the counselors appear to be very young. While I understand everyone has to start somewhere, they often seem unequipped to handle difficult situations appropriately. Instead of using incidents as opportunities to teach and redirect children, it often feels like the first response is suspension or removal from activities rather than understanding what happened and helping the child learn from the situation. One of my biggest concerns is that issues involving one child have sometimes resulted in my other child being pulled into the situation, even when they were not directly involved. Each child should be treated as an individual,not by association. I was also told that staff laughed during a serious situation involving my child. While I did not personally witness this, hearing that from my child was very concerning. If accurate, I would expect situations involving children's behavior or safety to be handled with professionalism and respect. Communication with parents has also been frustrating. Rather than working together to understand the circumstances and develop solutions, it has often felt like discipline is the default response. Children make mistakes, and camp should be a place where they are taught, guided, and supported, not just punished. I understand that working with children is not easy, but parents trust the YMCA to provide a safe, structured, and nurturing environment. I hope the YMCA invests more in training its counselors on child development, behavior management, conflict resolution, de-escalation, and professional communication. My goal in sharing this review is not to criticize individual staff members but to encourage improvements that will benefit all children and families. read more

If I could give it a zero I would. They are very happy to take your money every month, but try and cancel. They have an online portal to cancel. If you use that they come back and tell you it was just a request portal, that you need to jump through various hoops.. JUST to cancel. Complete and total BS. Non responsive to emails and don't care if you are no longer in the area. read more

The people at this YMCA are some of the kindest, most genuine and caring people I've ever met. To say the least, they are some of the best people ive ever had the pleasure of interacting with. Many people around the myrtle beach area LOVE to sit around and complain, they have nothing better to do with their time. I am crippled from Covid. My whole left side is numb and my right leg. I have been in a wheelchair for 5 years and need a pool to exercise in. I was pushed out of the last gym I went to because my leg gave out and their so called lifeguard had to come back to the pool. I was pushed out of that gym because I was complaining about having to get a note from my doctor. When I came back in I was told that my membership was cancelled. Now the YMCA won't reserve the use of the handicap facilities for the handicapped. I was in the regular locker room which has 1 handicapped shower and had another member yelling at me because she needed a shower with grab bars. I was in the regular locker room because the three handicapped accessible showers in the Family locker room were taken by able-bodied members. When I complained about the able-bodied people using the handicapped showers I was told that she (management) had to wait sometimes to get into the showers. The difference is she is able-bodied and had to wait for an able-bodied person to get out of the shower. I am HANDICAPPED and have to wait for an ABLE-BODIED person to get out of the HANDICAPPED shower. The last time when the lady was yelling at me about her needing the grab bars there were 4 showers open without grab bars. So, I don't understand how they can tell me that the YMCA doesn't have to keep the handicapped facilities available for the hadicapped. I was also told that their legal council told them that they didn't have to reserve the handicapped facilities for the handicapped. I don't understand why they will let the able-bodied make the Handicapped wait for the Handicapped showers when there are able-bodied showers available for them. read more

Whenever we visit my parents who live in Myrtle Beach we sign up for the week pass at this YMCA. It's really clean, well maintained and the staff are super friendly!! The pool is excellent and lap swim hours are perfect for my spouse, who is an avid swimmer! He's never had to wait for a lane. Dry sauna is also wonderful-coed in the pool area. A small amount of lifting machines and equipment but enough to get the job done! Might be a short wait on a machine you need to use but people do not linger on their cellphones at machine stations here. Clients/members are very respectful of each other. This Y also has a large parking lot. I also love that the dog park and paved walking trails are right next door!! Not much to view on the walking trail (ie nature/varied birds) but for hiking/biking it's perfect. read more

While I can't speak to the fitness center, I can't say enough about the Rec soccer team we've been playing on for the last three years. My son has been blessed with two incredible coaches- they have provided skills for the field and beyond, building strong leadership, accountability, respect and a genuine love for the game. The coaches go above and beyond to build bonds with each child, between team mates and even families. The organization as a whole is organized; the fields (and bathrooms) are wonderfully maintained. Choosing the YMCA for rec soccer was one of the best decisions I've made to develop my sons athletic experience. read more

Really disappointed that they charge $15 DOLLARS for a day pass even when you are already part of the Nationwide YMCA program. This feels like a money grab by this "family" and "Christian" organization. I arrived at 7PM, with two operating hours remaining are they informed me without empathy, care, or understanding that they don't do prorated times, or a 24 hour guest pass. It's just a poor business model and I would hope that the greedy owners would revise their business plan to better. read more

Let me tell you what I witnessed of three day care workers and how they treated these very young children. One day, I went there around noon to enjoy a nice walk along the trail and eat my lunch on the bench. This YMCA has a dog park next to it and the trail goes along the front of the property, past the dog park, and back to 17HWY The Greenway. Since I don't actually have a membership here, I didn't even realize these women were day car workers, I just thought they had mixed children. First, these two women were walking towards me with, what I thought was, their young children far behind them. There were old enough to walk but still in pull-ups so they are basically babies in my opinion. That was the first thing that I found alarming and why I was paying attention to them. They were staring at me, making conversation amongst themselves, and not even checking to see if their children were still behind them. I was thinking to myself, aren't there constant abductions in this town and here are these two women seemingly not caring at all about their own babies. I'm childless but one of eight and even I was on alert. As I'm about to pass them and they are still staring at me, the little black boy trips, falls forward, and hits his chin on the sidewalk. Neither of these two women made any movements at all to pick him up as he cried. They just started staring at him. They weren't even encouraging him to get back up or telling him he's okay. Nothing but whatever because that's how some people parent, right? I wouldn't but maybe some neglectful mothers would. So I'm walking past them, this kid is crying, and I go, "If you're looking at me, I'd pick him up but he's not my kid and I don't want to just grab yours." They both just stared at me like I had three heads. I even looked back afterwards and they were still staring at me and not giving a fuck about either kid. No questions about whether or not the little white boy pushed the other one, nothing. Even the other little boy wasn't helping him up either. That's what that "parenting style" gets you by the way. I shook my head and kept walking. I come upon another "mother" and her "child" just going to sit down where I wanted to sit. I walk past and say to the them both, "enjoy your picnic!" When this other woman gave me a funny look with her fake reply, "we will!" That was when I realized, these aren't their mothers, these are child care workers. I sat down on the grass not even like 20 yards from them and they were already getting up to leave. So, I guess this one doesn't care about making sure her "kid" eating her food but has her face glued to her cell the whole time? Ridiculous. If I was scouting this YMCA to consider letting my own child attend here, my answer would be NO!!! I have a global membership to the YMCA but they do not honor it here. They charge $60 for a week membership but you cannot sign up for the fitness classes they offer. You need to hope the instructor lets you stay. I went to a step aerobic class, I have been doing step for over 20 years, the instructor had us facing away from her and did not pre-teach the moves. I feel off the step and sprained my ankle. The instructor never came over to see if I was ok. read more

My husband and I have YMCA memberships in Upstate SC and have gone to other branches while traveling without a problem. We live here part-time and were turned away from this branch, because they "don't do nationwide reciprocity". I called and found out Georgetown and Pawleys locations don't either. I'm not paying for a day pass when I'm already a nationwide member! What a racket! Myrtle Beach is a tourist-driven area. These three YMCA's should welcome tourists just like every other business does here. Ironically, their mission statement is "The Y is an all-inclusive organization dedicated to making an impact in our Community." If anything, they're EXCLUSIVE. They shouldn't be able to use the YMCA name and receive government grant money (and enjoy the perks of being a non-profit organization) if they're going to operate as a private, members-only fitness center. Plenty of treadmills, elipitcals, stationary bikes. They use towels and spray bottles for cleaning machines. Traffic inside was moderate to light at the noon hour. Staff: Average to friendly. Unlike the Charleston SC area YMCAs they do not accept Y members as away members. If you are from the Triangle NC or other charge is $5 per day. Overall a decent YMCA with most of what you will need. Advice: Bring a towel or towels; Bring a lock to lock your locker. read more

The youth soccer program is super disappointing! Between the registration fee and the fee to play soccer, we pay a lot of money for our children to play on your teams. Your coaches are even volunteers! But when your child's team wins the entire championship as mine did, they get absolutely NOTHING to show for it! I mean nothing! Usually a championship team will receive a trophy, a cheap medal or at least some kind of award but after all their hard work and winning, they do not receive a single thing to show they were the championship winners! That is so wrong and you really upset a lot of children! Do better YMCA!! read more

This is a nice YMCA. Everything in the weight room looked brand new. All of the equipment was in great shape and was very well organized. My hotel had a worthless weight room so I came over here to the Y. My membership to another Y got me in for free. It was a Wednesday afternoon and it was very slow. I basically had the whole place to my self, which was very nice. The front desk staff were nice and courteous. The locker rooms were clean. Very much enjoyed my workout here. I would certainly recommend. read more

The overall manager tapped my wife on the arm while she was on a moving treadmill because the bottle cap from her bottled water fell under an adjacent treadmill. In several other incidents a personal trainer named Marion or Marriam told us to move from a machine because her time is more valuable than ours. I told her to wait, and she complained. My wife left for another machine. This place is run by an obese overall manager that is unsafe and rude, who should not be allowed to run a fitness center based on his lack of understanding fitness, and his unsafe actions. read more

I was very disappointed that during my visit to Myrtle Beach that I was not allowed to use the YMCA without having to pay a $5 guest fee...even though I am a member of the Y in a different region of SC. I am persuaded to think that this is not a hard and fast rule as I see in the reviews that Jack L. Greenville, SC had a free visit on 6/24/2019 b/c he was a member of another YMCA. I also see that Stephen H. Chattanooga, had to pony up $5 for his 10/19/2019 visit. I don't like to see that b/c it suggests to me that who ever is working the front desk is making decisions about who pays and who doesn't. You may be thinking that its only $5 and in Myrle beach that won't even cover a cup of coffee...and your right....but its the principal that's being addressed here. I have a Y membership in one city and I routinely work out in an adjacent city...even though the two YMCAs are not 'connected'. They allow up to 6 free guest visits per month, and then ask for a fee. So this brings the mission of the Y into the discussion. Are they hoping to make $$ by charging that measly $5 to an existing Y member? Should they not be focused on the mission of the organization...."To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all." Front desk staff are well informed and polite. The facility is beautiful and well maintained. I think this is definitely a place that is more designed for families or older individuals. They offer an amazing amount of group classes which was why I decided to give them a try. Unfortunately the classes were not what I was expecting. The Les Mills classes were not taught in accordance with Les mills classes I have taken at numerous other gyms. Cycle classes were over crowded and unorganized. The bikes in the cycle room were lower quality than spin bikes I am used to. The sauna is very nice and lovely. The heated pool and warm pool area are comfortable. If you are looking for YMCA that is family friendly, please, look elsewhere!!! it used to be a facility that was enjoyable for everyone, adults and children. Recently it became an uncomfortable place with unreasonable rules and restrictions where kids are hardly ever welcome since the place is turning into a senior center. I've always supported YMCA financially, however, will switch our membership to a more youthful and friendly club. The membership fee is on a high end, but the experience worth it. The hours are a little limited too, and some days you are forced out at 4 or 5 pm. The stuff is friendly. And there are lots of options to get a work out done. read more

I have called this YMCA 4 times in the past month for registering for private swimming lessons. The customer service reps have been very nice, but NO ONE in charge of scheduling the swimming lessons have ever called me back. Very disappointing, because I really want to learn how to swim. read more
