I was expecting some lovely vintage inspired frocks. What I found was a store I would call goth girl heaven. There were lots of corsets, short skirts with crinoline that peaked out the bottom, striped thigh-high socks, plaid pants with attached straps, bells and whistles, and even velvet bell-sleeved atrocities that looked exactly like the way I pictured adult witches wearing when I was 12. Yes, amongst all this was a healthy selection of retro-inspired dresses. They were much more 40's inspired than 50s or 60s, with the main thrust being the nu-pin-up look. I will say that I LOVE the pin-up culture and style of dress, and this would be a great place for modern day Betties to come find their wardrobes. But overall I felt the shop was just way too costumey and not wearable enough for the average gal.

Alas, no, I was not always this cool. If you could only have seen me circa 2000/2001, when I used to go around in my Slipknot hoodie, no doubt listening to a Korn CD on my new-fangled discman. O, halcyon days. My relationship with thrash metal did not last terribly long (I just couldn't relate to all of the angst, for then as I now I was possessed of a sunny dispostion), but for the duration of that particular affectation, you could be sure to find me most Saturdays in Asha in Stephen's Green Shopping Centre. Asha is the only shop in Dublin dedicated exclusively to moper nonsense (and I'm not forgetting about St George's St arcade; that is for when the goths graduate to emo-dom). Asha is full of t-shirts, posters, stickers, badges, bracelets and teenagers going through their 'awkward' phase, essentially everything that you need to be cock-of-the-walk when you're hanging around outside the Central Bank, giving out about how awful your parents are because they won't let you get a Jim Morrison tattoo. Going into Asha was always an insructive experience, because apart from selling goth accessories, they also sell cannabis paraphernalia. And pot, beloved not only of mopers, is also enjoyed by scobes, so Asha is the only place in Dublin where these two disparate cultures are likely to interact on a regular basis. Go to Asha one day, sidle up to one of the stripy-jumper-sovereign ring-kids and tell him "I just heard that hippy over there slagging Bob Marley". Oh, what fun.

Turns out, this building houses a few other shops (such as the vintage shop downstairs and Café Irie, both well worth a visit) and SeSi was only the shop on the first floor that sells new garments. Even though I was ready to go vintage-crazy, I wasn't disappointed. The clothes are SeSi are feminine, pretty and a little different than what you'll find on the high street. I do agree that some of it feels a bit Mass Produced in China but it's still cute, so I have a hard time caring that much. Also, the prices are pretty good, and you could easily manage to create an outfit here that looks like it cost a lot more, if you're into that kind of thing. They have some darling shoes and accessories too, which are also cute, girly and affordable.

However, the shop Sesi on Fownes Street stands out from the rest because it sells original women's clothing and accessories. The tiny boutique has a lot of hidden treasures so give yourself some time to look through all the racks and counter tops. Some of the great merchandise I saw today included some cheap vintage clutches, pretty colourful bowties for your hair and some funky black and orange platforms. It's also a good place to buy jewellery, especially dangling earrings. Some are made out of glass, others string and there's a collection of tacky Hello Kitty ones. If you're in the mood for something different, Sesi is a good place to start.

Inside I found some of the coolest t-shirts I had seen in Dublin. They look like home-made vintage band tees with the likes of the Doors, The Clash and Lou Reed on them. Right up my alley. The fit on some of the t-shirts was a bit weird, but they still were highly original. My inner dragarella pulled me in to inspect the while and gold Grecian number, but all was forgotten when I found the slinky Bond-Girlesque black cocktail dress posing vampily by the dressing rooms. Claire's is not to be confused with an actual jewelry shop. Everything in here is cheaply mass produced in China and shipped all around the world so every little girl can sparkle a bit. Prices are low because quality is low. But don't get me wrong. Just because it is cheap doesn't mean it's bad. You can find some fun and playful accessories even if you are over the age of 12. Their earrings are the best - great selection of cute studs and dangly stuff. They also do ear piercings, also a popular mall-girl activity back in the day. Glad to see it's still going strong, and at Claire's if you get one ear done the other is 20% off or something like that.

Claire sell "jewelry" - generally trinketty things made of plastic and non-precious metal, hair things, and a small selection of hats and scarves and bags. They have random cute things any 7 year old girl would love and I defy anyone not to hear at least a little voice of their inner child in this shop. Most things are pretty inexpensive, although hats and scarves are more expensive than somewhere like penneys. There's lots and lots of glitter here - currently it's on sale! I had to resist buying the spray on glitter because I'm too old and I have enough of it unused at home! Claires is fun and perfect for dressing up.... just don't tell your grown up friends where you got the stuff!
