Remember when you were a kid, and you'd watch those toy commercials on TV showing kids playing with…read moresome action figure or vehicle? ...and somehow, those TV kids had managed to turn their backyard into a miniature tropical island, complete with small houses, paved streets, palm trees and rain forest Flora, an actual stream with running water, simulated topography with at least four different kinds of ground cover... and you begged and pleaded for your mom to go out and buy that toy for you, then came home and used it to do jumps off the sofa or coffee table? I think of that every time I come to the fair, and see the garden railroad. It is like one of those toy commercials, hopped up on some kind of genetically modified extraterrestrial steroid. There has to be at least a mile of track, looping and twisting through a scale miniature landscape or tiny buildings, mountains, people, and landforms. And in those tracks run several model trains. During the Fair, the displays are in full operation. During the year, there are regular hours of operation for tours and Q&A with the volunteer staff who keep the garden railroad in good repair. Walk along the western fence line for the best view, and to see the miniature SoCal landmarks from the surrounding area. I'm not into trains the way, say, Huell Howser was I to asking Captain Obvious questions ("Now Carl, is this an actual DESK???" "... Yes, Huell, that's a desk.") But any visitor here can appreciate the countless hours, the painstaking attention to detail, and the sheer number of dateless Friday and Saturday nights that went into making this place. "Can we play with the trains, daddy?" Well, no... In fact, you really can't touch them or even stare at them like you're THINKING about touching them in front of the engineers. But so long as you're on the right side of the 8 foot wrought iron perimeter fence line, you can watch those big-kid senior citizens operate the trains they worked so hard to build, their youthful toy commercial come to life in amazing, terrifying delight.

The Fairplex Garden Railroad is touted as the "oldest and possibly the largest miniature railroad…read moreof its kind in the United States and possibly the world." It first opened at the 1924 LA County Fair and as it grew, it moved from a fair exhibit to a permanent fixture at the Pomona Fairplex. It can be viewed during the annual county fair in September, but is also available year round during special events or on specific days listed on their website (http://fgrr.org/calendar.html). It is located between the Main Grandstand and Fairplex Building #4. If you're here during the fair, I would suggest getting a map to navigate your way around! It is run by volunteers and hobbyists and is free to visit, although they willingly accept donations to maintain it. Even if you are not a huge fan of trains and miniatures, it's still really cool to see and the price is certainly right! From the days of the gold rush and the old west to modern day buildings, everything is miniaturized, even the plants and people. The individuals who create the scenes really pay attention to detail. It almost reminds me of a miniature Disneyland! A great place to take kids and the volunteers there love these miniature trains and towns and will answer your questions and educate you on this mini world! Choo choo!

Overall, we were very happy with this venue and so was my pops. It was totally his style. And I also have some nice little nostalgic memories of this venue from back in the day when my friends and I would get our Aqua Net and our groove on. Some may say it's little pricey for the area, but it's a historical land mark in the city of Pomona, AND you can bring in your own food (instant savings) AND your own liquor (tremendous instant savings). AND they clean up for you at the end of the event--totally awesome when you danced too much in those nonsensible shoes and just want to kick them off and go home to bed. Staff was great too--office personnel very helpful and professional. Security team also in close contact and very professional especially during encounter with one tequila faced guest . . . We absolutely adored our wedding experience at the Garner House. As Southern California natives, we aimed for a quintessential SoCal wedding, and the Garner House exceeded our expectations. The historical charm of the building adds a timeless elegance to the occasion, with meticulously maintained rooms offering a glimpse into the past. The cozy interior spaces provided ideal settings for our guests to gather, while the pristine outdoor courtyard boasted stunning Spanish architecture perfectly suited for our intimate event of around 90 guests. The venue received countless compliments for its beauty, and its convenient location near the DoubleTree and Casa 425 was appreciated by many of our guests. One of the standout advantages of the Garner House is its unbeatable price point. Renting the entire house for an afternoon at less than $2,500, which is also considered a tax-deductible donation, felt like an incredible deal. Additionally, the staff, including Shelly and Sonja, were incredibly responsive and accommodating throughout the planning process, promptly addressing all our questions and inquiries. They also provide a list of preferred vendors who are all incredible! On the day of our event, the Garner House facilitated seamless logistics, allowing access to the venue two hours prior to the start of the event. They even permitted us to drop off items the day before, which was immensely helpful. The four-hour rental period, with a strict cut-off at 8:30 pm in accordance with Claremont city ordinance, was perfect for our ceremony and reception. Moreover, the timing allowed guests to continue the celebration at the bars in downtown Claremont, just a short walk away. The limitation to beer and wine for alcoholic beverages suited our preferences perfectly, eliminating the need for additional expenses on other types of alcohol. Additionally, the option to rent an AV system, including speakers, a switchboard, microphone, and aux cord with an iPhone connector, simplified our music arrangements. We found it easier to hook up our computer to the aux and have a relative manage the playlist rather than hiring a DJ. In summary, our experience at the Garner House was nothing short of magical. From its enchanting ambiance to its affordability and attentive staff, it provided the perfect backdrop for our special day, and we wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking an unforgettable wedding venue. read more

This is a cute clubhouse tuck away in a neighborhood. When driving by you would think it is just…read moreanother house. The exterior has a cabin feel to it with simple dark brown colors and white trimmed paint. The house itself does not look big on the outside but once you step inside it is very spacious. There are a few entrances you can go into: main front door, kitchen, and the couple side doors. The kitchen entrance (located downstairs with steps that leads you to it) is convenient especially if you have plenty of stuff to carry as it goes directly out to the parking lot. The kitchen has everything you need: refrigerator, sinks, tables, and mini kitchen appliances for your cooking needs. From the kitchen it then leads you to the main ballroom this space is huge it also has a stage and to the side of it are the restrooms. The ballroom has its own separate entrance doors that also leads to the parking lot. When seeing the place I saw two main ballrooms upstairs and downstairs they are about the same size and both have stages. There are a few bathrooms: in the ballroom space upstairs, the downstairs ballroom, and next to the kitchen both are kept clean and nicely decorated. Each ballroom can fit around 100 - 120 guests comfortably without having the tables being cramped. As for tables and chairs they are provided by the clubhouse - I am not sure about this I came there for a party I was invited to and helped with the setup. When we arrived there, few of the staff members met us at the parking lot to open the place for us and they stayed there incase we needed extra assistance. When locking up we handed them the keys and they were there most of the time. The parking lot is very small less than 20 cars can park in the actual parking spot and the rest of the cars can park in the streets or in the surrounding neighborhoods. They have a small garden in the front of the clubhouse a nice area to take pictures with as there are tress and green grasses for your background.

So out we go to San Dimas, after the commute and winding through a residential neighborhood you'll find a nice facility with easy access. Regarding decor, I recommend bringing everything you need to create ambiance. You cannot affix anything to the walls so it's a blank canvas. Lighting seemed to be a good option, I wish we had more. They kept the room very bright, it would have been nice if our banquet manager showed us how to dim the lights. Most people were talking and catching up, so it was a small detail, but would have been easier on the eyes to not be brightly lit. You also have to bring in all your own equipment for music and video. They did help us set up our projector and laptop to a screen on the wall to show a slideshow video. Areas of improvement: The bar needed a second bartender to serve as the line was out the door to the bar. So the event planner, banquet manager should have planned for that based on the number of RSVPs. There was coffee and tea self service in the bar. They only had "to go" cups and fake creamer. This was a disappointment. Dessert was served on disposable styrofoam plate which seemed a little janky. What was very nice: The dinner was buffet, real plates and silverware and cloth napkins. Yay. The food selections were cheese platter, fruits for appy, then Tri-Tip (very good), chicken (didn't try) Veggie Lasagna (needed some color, didn't try), mashed potatoes, rice and assorted squash (squash was good). The staff was friendly, AC worked great as it was over 100 degrees outside. So we couldn't use the balcony. Bathroom and event space were clean. Overall a positive experience. Appreciated their hospitality. We were able to set up l(see bridal lounge to change clothes... for an additional fee) breakdown and get everything out in our allotted time.

Bathrooms were plenty and well maintained. Overall, I hope the house gets remodeled so it can keep holding events!

Karen was always super responsive and quick to answer any questions during our 10 months of planning. It's such an affordable venue and I loved that you are able to bring in all of your own vendors. We brought in our own bartender team where we got to supply the alcohol, and we had a food truck there for our meal. They had a handful of staff there the whole night to check on bathrooms, empty trash cans, and just make sure the venue was in good shape. They are also there to move chairs from the ceremony if needed, take down tables and chairs, really was a great experience and I would recommend this venue for so many events - not just weddings. People have been raving about our venue since and I'm so happy we decided to do our wedding there.
