I really liked this provider at one time. I really tried not to give a bad review of Clarence Eye Center and Dr Murphy but i could no longer hold off on this. When i first saw Dr Murphy he changed the way I see. I have an eye condition that causes me to see multiples. The solve for that is Scleral Lenses. They are very expensive and I got several pairs from Clarence Eye Center. For the first time in over 10 years, I was able to see clearly and only one of everything! He charges a $250 fitting fee for each eye, at least he did last time I last got lenses from him. This was to include the fitting fee for each eye including all scans to properly fit them as well as free follow ups for each eye to get the fit just right. The last pair I bought, on the last fitting, which should have been included, they billed my insurance for a routine eye exam. When i called to inquire they apologized but said they would not retract their claim from the insurance company. They offered me a "credit" for my next routine exam. I explained that I go to Fichte for routine eye exams and that I only see them for my lenses. They still refused to withdraw the claim. I could have at that point pushed to claim insurance fraud on them but since i just got resolved with my vision for what is usually a year or more i decided to not embarrass them with an insurance fraud claim. I figured that i would just find a new Scleral lense provider in the future even if I had to drive an hour to see them. Now, I am in the process of getting new lenses and my new provider reached out to them to get my records to get a baseline and not have to start from scratch and they have told my new provider that they cannot help them as they never did any scans of my eyes. That is a blatant lie since they needed to do the scans to fit me with the lenses. Moral of the story, Scleral Lenses are life changing, just don't go to Clarence Eye Center for them. Save yourself the headache and seek out a different provider. read more

For the past 18 years I have received care for eyesight which until last year had mainly involved the provision of updated eyeglass prescriptions. (Each of his prior prescriptive eyeglasses had lasted many years.) Each year, Dr. Murphy would perform marvelous scans on my eyes as well as the traditional tests of sight and eye disease. Then, the tests last year disclosed growing cataracts. Every old person's nemesis. Dr. Murphy and I discussed the options and difficulties which gave me a sense of confidence in his recommendations. He did not counsel immediate decision or action which I appreciated. In addition, he printed out a comprehensive summary of my record to alert my physician of the background of this diagnosis. (I kept one copy and gave the other to my personal care physician.) The staff was as always friendly, helpful and professional, the office environment clean, pleasant and cheerful. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Michael Murphy for several years now. I have the utmost respect for his abilities and knowledge in the optometry field. He always seems to be on top of the most recent studies and eye care solutions. I have always had a good experience at Clarence Eye Care. The staff is always very professional and courteous, never had a very long wait, even at times they were extremely busy. There are two instances that make them stand above other optometrists that I have dealt with in my past and why I will continue to stay with them. One was that they took me on a day they were closed in order to look at my injured eye. They were able to determine the eye was lacerated and provided me the right treatment. However the second instance arose when they referred me to another doctor outside of their doors for a second opinion on the injured eye. They showed me that they were more concerned about the health of my eye than retaining me as a patient as I could have easily stayed with the other practice that they referred me to. Of course I returned. All I can say is that I highly recommend Dr. Murphy. He is now our family optometrist and a few other of my friends and neighbors that I have sent his way. I have not seen any other doctors at the practice, but I can assume they are all very capable of taking care of you and your sight. read more

Okay place. I went for a routine eye exam covered by my insurance. I wanted an updated contact prescription so they conducted that exam as well. I was unaware that they were different exams and would charge me for the contact exam. They didn't even notify me that this wasn't covered until the end. Unprofessional. Seems like I was being tricked into services. Employees were nice enough but I can get that at all the other available eye care businesses in buffalo. I visited Clarence Eye Care on the recommendation of a colleague. I already had seen an ophthalmologist and had a script for glasses. I didn't make an appointment prior to visiting and initially I was just going to look. I needed progressive lens or bifocals for my eyes but wanted something fashionable since I lost my last pair. I was immediately greeted when I walked in by an optician. He assisting in helping me finding eyeglasses to fit the shape of my face and were aesthetically appealing as well. I was told it would be a week before they were ready so when I didn't hear back I called and found out they were in but they had a new receptionist who failed to call me. I went back in to pick up the glasses and was treated very well. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because of the lack of follow up. I would definitely recommend and return. read more

I've been to my fair share of optometrists but never had such a great experience as this one. I filled out an appointment form online for an appointment the next day at 4PM and I received a phone call to confirm at noon. Signing up as a new patient was fast and easy--the staff were very professional and customer-oriented. Dr. Murphy is very honest and knowledgeable. He went above and beyond to make sure I understood every facet of the exam and the health of my eyes. I did not even know I had eye care coverage in my health insurance plan, but he made sure to check. Jon was very helpful at the front retail end of the store--he knew exactly what I wanted and gave me many options. They even stayed open for another 30 minutes for me and gave me (3) different two-week sets of contacts to try for free. Dr Murphy has been my mom's Dr for over 10 years and she would often say how well he took care of her and how much she liked him. I went with her yesterday to her appointment and finally had a chance to meet him. I was not disappointed! He explained in detail her multiple eye problems and made her feel much better about her eye deteriorations in general. On the way home she again said how much she liked him and mentioned to me that he personally drove over to her place with some sample medication for her years ago. That sincere show of kindness, shows me what kind of gentleman he is and how professional his office is shows me that he truly cares for his patients. I suffer from Keratoconus and have had a hard time finding the right treatment. Since the first moment I walked into Clarence Eye Care I have been blown away by the service I have received. The whole staff is amazing and Dr. Murphy has gone above and beyond numerous times to find solutions and work with me. The knowledge and expertise, especially of cornea issues, is top notch. I am a 65 year old male with glaucoma who recently switched to Clarence Eye Care, due to insurance reasons, after being a long time patient at ECP (Eye Care Professionals). I can tell you that I very much prefer Clarence Eye Care over ECP and wish I had tried them long ago. The staff are all professional and very personable. He took the time to look up my information and told me to come right in. it would take about 3 minutes to put the lens in a brand new frame. I can't say how great my experience at Clarence Eye Care was. From the moment I checked in as a new patient, to the check-out process, I have nothing but complements to give the staff and Dr. Murphy himself. Dr. Murphy went beyond the "call of duty" and spent so much time helping me. He was genuinely concerned with the health and well-being of my eyes and vision, and took so much time explaining things and finding the perfect customized contact lens for my eyes, considering I'm a difficult patient due to problems with my corneas. The staff really paid attention to details and welcomed me by name. I was also very impressed with Dr. Murphy's office manager. Insurance is confusing to say the least, and she took the initiative to get to the bottom of my coverage and helped me understand my options. There are a lot of other offices closer to me (I'm in the Southtowns), but Clarence Eye Care is well worth the drive time for me. I can't thank Dr. Murphy and his team enough! I took my daughter to see Dr. Murphy for the first time on Friday. He was very thorough and spent a lot of time answering our questions. He is extremely knowledgeable and so friendly that he instantly put her at ease. We were getting contacts and glasses . He went over everything with her. He explained the difference in the contacts and what I thought was really nice was he wasn't pushy on one or another. He said it was her choice on whatever she was comfortable with. She gets very nervous and is a little shy so it was refreshing to see her so comfortable on our first visit. The staff is very friendly and I have to say that when I initially called I was looking for a appointment within the week but there were none available so they said if they got any cancellations that they would call and within a couple days they did call and offer me a cancelled appointment. Of course I was thrilled and took it. The time they spend with you is amazing and you can tell that they just want you to be happy with your new glasses or contacts. I requested thin lenses and they did not give me what I ordered. I need thin lenses and instead, Clarence put large lenses and broke my frame. I bought my frame from another vender. Since the lenses were so large and cracked the frames, I had to purchase another pair of frames. Furthermore, the anti-scratch costs a whopping $130 and the lenses scratched within two months. Moreover, instead of fixing their mistake with the lenses, Clarence wanted me to pay more for the thin lenses. On my next appointment, even though I had a written quote for just paying extra for thinner lenses, they suddenly changed their mind and wanted me to pay full price for the lenses.
