Just ordered their Fish and Chips to go. I asked the girl on the phone what it comes with (besides, obviously, fish and chips). She said fish, fries, cole slaw and a side. I said Another side? Besides the chips? She said yes. So I ordered green beans. Got my order home and it was $35 for 2 orders of: one piece of fish, 2 tablespoons of coleslaw, and a cup of green beans. No chips. I called them, I was told it doesn't come with chips. WTF? She wouldn't budge, I didn't get any fries. And the piece of fish was literally dripping grease. Will never go back. read more

I love their broasted chicken w/ jacket fries, but their burgers are also amazing! They have about 10 large screen TVs with several sports on TV. I've been coming to the Ice House for as long as I can remember! We have family reunions in Clarinda and this is always the restaurant of choice. They have a huge menu with everything from appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, wraps, pasta, salad, and soups along with a full bar. The staff is amazing and friendly, with the place ran by some good owners. It gives you a small-town feel because it's the type of place you'll run into someone you know. They have plenty of seating for large parties. The food is good and consistent each time we have visited. My favorite is the honey mustard wrap and the jacket fries! read more

We went back to this place, 3 of us this time. Again after some earlier business in town. The same friend as last time and my 'significant' other. Have no idea what that really signifies, but like saying it. We had dinner. She has the steak sandwich, he had a burger and I the Philly. The casual ratings were, his burger was "Good". Couldn't get a more complete description. So will just go with that one. Her steak sandwich was in her words, "Fair, but we had a better steak a few days ago at home." Seems it wasn't very tender nor tasteful. When \i asked if she was saying it really wasn't very good? She said, no, it was "OK". Would you order it again? No, I would try something else. Mine was the Philly, The last time I had one of their burgers. The Philly was much better and would recommend this to someone going there for the first time. The meat was cooked, but not dry and the toppings had come straight off the grill. It was served hot. This was a tasty dinner. Summing it up we had one really good and 2 'average'. I've been here twice. The first, it was pretty dead and I was one of maybe 8 patrons. The food was good and well priced. The service was friendly which made me want to go back. The second time was dreadful. My hamburger was sweet.. I still don't know how that happened. I asked for bacon on my burger and it came out on the side in greasy, burnt, dreadful pieces. It didn't even resemble bacon, nor in taste or appearance. My waitress seemed rushed although to her defense it was pretty busy. Ordered a patty melt sandwich and it was the most disappointing sandwich I've ever had. Such a simple sandwich that you would think couldn't really be messed up but so not the case here. It came out and had big chunks of raw onion falling out of it. Opening it up, I saw more handfuls of big chunks of raw, white onion. Tried to eat a bite and just no. No, no, no. They ruined a diner classic. The fries it came with were decent enough but nobody seemed overly concerned that I didn't like the food. They did take off 50% from the bill so in the end I had an overpriced serving of very average fries. They never offered anything else. Not to re-do the sandwich properly, not to comp the meal...just 50% off. I don't usually write reviews but this one is well deserved. Stay away people. There are better options and better food....even in rural Iowa. read more

I'm not a fan of these types of restaurants, standard American fare, but the kids in my life are so....for what it is, it's nice. Fair prices, large portions, and decent food. The waitstaff is pretty nice and there are television screens everywhere. For small town Iowa it's definitely not shabby. read more

Ordered spicy chicken with medley vegetables ... Breading was a little much but it was okay. My mom ordered potato soup and she said it was delicious. First time eating here and it was ok, but nothing great. Place seemed to be very popular on a Sunday morning. I had a burger and it was good, not out of this world, but good. FF were good and crisp on outside and tender on the inside. They have some fries that are cut from a potato crosswise, like potato chips, but they were not very crisp, just limp. Big and nice and new! The " old " Ice House' was across town , and had a tradition if great food . But the new building ... WOW ! Great for large groups ! They have the dining room & also a " sports bar " section . The Sportsbar area has 10 nice TVs and a full bar. Also there's a seperate " banquet room" for private events . The menu is varied with " fine dining " prices . Certainly " expensive " especialy for the area . The food is good , portions are generous, &you can have a cocktail with your meal , (without turning heads LoL ) The cowboy burger is Huge and savory . The chicken fried steak is a hearty treat . The grilled salmon was well cooked and seasoned . Even the dinner salad that comes with, is generous . I personaly have a reaction to MSG. I am pretty sure they use sesonings that contain MSG. Rocky road with Ice House. In their old location, I feel they became complacent. Then they built the big shiny new place and things were looking 4 stars all they way. But time goes on and things sort of fade. Still a solid meal. Lots of options. If this place were being voted on as just a bar it would be 4.5stars. It's where the locals all go. Ok, so I'm riding my new HD RoadGlide Ultra, through Iowa and I'm hungry, very hungry. The next town is a quaint little hamlet "Clarinda" I Yelp'd for a destination and I liked what I saw at the "ICE HOUSE". Great call, ice cold Guinness, Prime Rib and Sports everywhere ...a virtual s paradise, amidst the Corn. The staff is very attentive and check this out, the owner Mike is my first cousin, whom I've never met...is that possible, well yes "only in Iowa" Needless to say, many beers were consumed and s few Jamison's shots. Jennifer the GM was delightful and made sure everything was perfect. The Prime Rib melted in my mouth and the salad & sides exceeded my expectations. What a great night! I had kind and attentive service while enjoying a daily special comprising of broasted chicken. My sides were Buffalo chips and a dinner salad with ranch dressing. The salad actually surprised me in that it had kale mixed in with the iceberg lettuce... not something you find very often. The Buffalo chips were sinful.
