Best onion rings ever and reason alone to visit J. Bruners
    Edmund G.

While visiting Iowa, friends took us to J Bruners located in the lovely town of Clarinda. We loved it so much especially the onion rings and had to go back a second time. We chose to sit on the bar side both times and service was super friendly . Food was great! My wife and I shared a cowboy ribeye which didn't disappoint. Will definitely be visiting again next time we're in town.

Before Covid timber's restaurant was the best. They had a great buffet, and their meals, even though expensive were worth it. My family and I and our adult kids all went over July 4 weekend. We had a terrific time except for the Timber's restaurant. The food was terrible.. there were 12 of us, and although the service was five stars, we couldn't believe the quality of the food. Not one of us had a good meal, which I know seems hard to believe. I will give one example... Two eggs, potatoes, and bacon. $22. We asked for the eggs over medium and they came over hard. They apologized and brought us two more eggs, both over hard again. Should be simple to make eggs... And why $22? At dinner a couple of my boys ordered steaks medium rare. They were delivered medium well... both of their steaks were overcooked. It was $35 for a piece of meat that was overcooked and the sides were extra. For what they charge at Timbers, you would think you were getting a great meal, but that's not the case. We couldn't eat our deviled eggs; it tasted like an ingredient had expired? We never return food, but we had to send this back. I'm not sure what happened, but five years ago, the restaurant was great. Now it is honestly terrible and overpriced. Timber's, seriously, you need to look at your menu, hire better cooks, and charge a fair price. The Lied Lodge is so great and your staff is terrific, but your restaurant can be better.

Some stand outs to me were the rolls. Move over Texas Roadhouse, these are the best rolls I've ever had. And that was just the first bites. We had corn about 6 different ways, and as a ceratifed corn head, this was terrific. Each dish was so thoughtfully curated and executed. I can see why this is such an occasion place, but even breakfast the next day was great. The cinnamon rolls are out of this world. The views of the hazelnut fields and all the greenery really feels otherwordly. Truly one of my favorite dining experiences as of late.

Before you read the novel below, I will summarize within the first couple sentences…read more We had heard about this small hole-in-the wall place and read rave reviews prior to reserving our table for a birthday celebration about a week in advance. We reserved for 4pm on a Sunday. 2 stars instead of 1 because 2 out of the 5 steaks ordered were cooked as ordered and were delicious. When we arrived it was to our surprise it was empty..no one else waiting/seated at the restaurant. It appeared to have one employee working, who happened to be the owner it turns out. We were seated and asked for drink orders and brought cans of pop, and told that Dr. pepper would have gone bad before it could get used so they didn't carry it. No big deal. Ordered a full spread of appetizers, didn't receive one item, asked about it and it was made and brought out. No big deal. Drinks were empty almost the entire time despite being the only table in the place and we were hardly checked on. Everyone ordered Rib Eye steaks except kids and one person ordered sirloin. We were told he was out of 10oz, so had to "upgrade" to a 12oz. All steaks were supposed to be medium rare. We were still the only people at the restaurant at this point...40 minutes later. The kids' items came out first, smart move. Then came my 12 oz steak which was burnt on edges, about 1/2" thick, and Well Done. Then, out came the 16oz rib eye and it was 3/4-1" thick, juicy and cooked to medium rare. As ordered. Then came my husbands steak, a 14oz cooked medium well and also about 1/2" thick the lobster tail was probably a 2oz tail and served meat side down on a leaf of lettuce...cold in the center. Then came the other 14oz that was about 3/4" thick, juicy and undercooked. Then came the birthday girl's 16oz and it was about 1/2" thick and well done. At this point, it was no longer a maybe because the 12oz was smaller it was over cooked, but a do they even know how to cook a steak? When I addressed the issue, I was told " Well, I cook on the plus side of what people order because some people say one temperature and mean another." I said "well, medium rare to me means warm red center. " He left and came back stating "I only have one steak left, so...." Just walked away. No apology, no explanation other than what was said. A table of 3 showed up about 5:30 and his attention went to them. We are business owners and know staff/supply shortages are real, we get it. BUT there is absolutely no excuse for the lack of service/explanation especially when charging over $20/$30 from a so called Wagyu bloodline that was over/under cooked 4/5 steaks. All he had to have said was, "hey, we are short staffed I am by myself, bare with me. I'm sorry it wasn't cooked to your liking, can I throw it back on or get you another/something else in its place?" But when you dismiss a complaint, offer no explanation, don't care to strike up a conversation with customers or even thank them for coming in there's a bigger issue. Especially when you shut down your Facebook page's option to leave a review after a message was sent directly to you regarding the service received is ignored. Something tells me maybe this wasn't the first time, maybe it wasn't an "off" night. Either way, reviews can still be left on other platforms and will be. We are not typically hard to please, be friendly, keep glasses filled up, bring us what we order and you receive a very generous tip and review. This was not the case here and people have a right to know what could happen during their visit especially since it seems any negative review is reported or replied to with a snarky come back.

Happy Anniversary to us! Well, yesterday but nonetheless decided we'd try a steakhouse we've read…read moremuch about in here. Honestly, we weren't that... impressed, but we gave it a valiant go on both meals chosen! Kinda bummed there wasn't a drink menu with cocktails, but they had a great selection of wine ranging from $100-$500 a bottle. So, we stuck with water. Bread and creamy butter was dropped off while we waited and who can't resist a warm roll? Got the Trail Boss Prime Rib, with salad bar, and baked potato side was requested as medium. The au ju lacked flavor, and only lasted a few bites before not used at all. The baked potato was delish though! Prime rib was very tender, a lot of cap which was nice, but it was just sorta.. average. I snagged their Teriyaki Tenderloin Kabob on a bed of wild rice, salad bar, and asparagus side (probably the first restaurant I've seen that's offered asparagus as an actual side), requested well done. By all accounts it does look a bit charred, but when the veggies were pulled apart, they were warm and tender and paired well with the teriyaki and rice. That rice was delish! Asparagus didn't blow any air up my skirt unfortunately, because I really wanted it to blow my mind. I felt like we left a lot of food on our plates, but that could've just been how it was. We just felt... underwhelmed and wasn't picking up on all the hype.
