I had a complex 2020 Tax return to file. Normally I do my own tax returns. But felt the 2020 return would be well past my skill level. I was certain we would owe a substantial amount to both the IRS and State of Arizona. At any rate, I brought into Sherrill Clark all of my spreadsheets, 1099, W2s and contacts for my personal taxes and businesses. She did a bang up job. She as swift in preparing the returns and had only a few questions. I was impressed at how the process want. At the end, There was a great surprise. We didn't owe anything and in fact were to get a substantial amount back for the IRS and the State of Arizona. Our taxes were filed electronically and we got the money from both the IRS and The state of Arizona in less than 2 weeks. Plus, the fees charged we very affordable. We've had Sherrill at Clark/James Inc. Tax & Accounting prepare our tax returns for several years without incident. This year however, Sherrill made a mistake which ended up costing us almost $500 out of pocket. When I politely inquired about the error, Sherrill stated that we did not include the required records with our submission to her. When I pointed out that all of the required records were present, she then changed her story and said that she had " missed it", which is okay, mistakes happen. What's not okay is blaming the client for your mistake and not offering a fair resolution. I asked if she felt comfortable charging us a fee to incorrectly prepare our tax return, resulting in the near $500 out of pocket expense. She then stated "I'm not going to give you a refund because it's not a lot of money". You're right Sherrill, it's not a lot of money, but it's not about the money, it's about the principal of the matter. You made an error that cost us money out of pocket, It's up to you to provide a fair resolution. Before leaving her office she told me that I should have another CPA do my tax returns in the future. Sherrill, I couldn't agree more. In fact, that's probably great advice for all your clients. Everybody makes mistakes and that's okay. But, what makes that okay is having the humility to admit fault, the integrity to make a corrective action, and the respect for you clients to offer a fair resolution. In my experience and opinion, Sherrill does not possess these necessary traits to be considered a competent professional. I would not recommend Clark/James Inc., as Sherrill suggested... have someone else do it. read more

Probably the WORST customer service that I have ever had from a "customer service" organization in the tri-city area. This is NOT just a one-time event, but has been building over the past several years while I have been blindly doing my taxes through them. THEY are the supposed professionals, but let details that are critical to the accounting practice slip through the cracks. They have ZERO desire to help if you are in need, show no understanding and have made mistakes that have caused errors and extra IRS payments in my return. This is actually my first post that I have EVER done on Yelp and felt so strongly about the past several years that I had to take a moment to let others know about Clark and James. I am so NOT the type of person to complain. I usually just quietly go the other way if I am unhappy with a business, but this is a bit different. Why, did I wait so long to transition to a new accounting firm...I don't know, but I least I know now that this is NOT the place to go and wanted to help others avoid the same mistake that I had made. read more
