I came here for a paint-stripping heat gun because I read a good review of this place somewhere else and they happened to be a) open and b) answering their phones when I called. It's k.o. a trek to get down to this part of town (I took the bus. It took 45 minutes), but the guys in this shop are super knowledgeable and helpful...they stayed open thirty minutes later than their advertised hours to help the people who had come in as they were closing, made supply recommendations that saved me a lot of money, etc. I didn't tell him much about what I was doing, so when I came in and told him what a nightmare my job had been he was k.o. upset and said I should have told him why I was there because he would have recommended [this and that product] that would have simplified things. Moral of the story: tell the people exactly what you are setting out to do, because they have a ton of knowledge and--for some reason/in this case--photos of what your options will yield. The guy at the counter asked me how I wound up at their shop and I said I read some good reviews and he said that they try to help everybody as much as possible...he seemed extremely proud that internet reviews were giving them new business, so I feel like I owe it to them to spread the word. read more

This place is great. The guys there are extremely friendly and helpful. I went here for a hammer drill to drill some anchor bolts into brick. I needed a certain size masonry drill bit that they did not have in their bit bucket, so they gave me a new one (since I was renting, they split the cost of the new bit with me). My only slightly negative point is the price. It was about $30 for the drill and bit, which would be a fair price if I was using the drill all day, but I only drilled 6 holes, which took me all of 5 minutes. I just moved into a new apartment, which I love, but after spending a couple of days in the place, it became apparent that the hardwood floors were a mess. They had obviously not been refinished properly; the floors were rough and gritty, and the polyurethane had been sloppily applied. As we had another week before our furniture arrived, I made the rash decision to give the floors a screen and coat myself (well, the Super and I did it together). I was lucky enough to happen upon Clarke's and I couldn't be more pleased. I rented a floor buffer from them at a very reasonable price, and they set me up with everything I needed. They even sent me home with extra stuff, saying I could return whatever I didn't use at no charge. The gentlemen who work there are knowledgable, friendly, and helpful. First I love the fact that I can support a local business. Next I love the fact that there was no hassle involved with the entire transaction. You could not have asked for a better place to help you in a DIY project. I needed to break up an old concrete patio in my backyard and this required a jack hammer. I called a few places but none were available...called Clarke based upon its ratings and hit pay dirt! They had several waiting. I picked it up that afternoon and was charged $10 less than quoted price. I was happy. I returned it the next day with no problems. Greeted with a smile and great service. This is the best tool rental in Brooklyn for basci items as they don't have everything but it is the ease of checking out and in that is so great. Other tool rental places want your first born as collateral and overly inflate the cost of the machine if broken, not Clarkes. Hands down the best tool rental in Brooklyn especially their great customer service. There is always someone there to help you to and from your car and they immediately check your rental for damage to release the sale. read more
