Update #1 - STILL THE BEST! I DID end up needing a new air conditioner by the end of this past summer (that would be 9 whole years I managed to keep mine running - thank you AC for your service), so I called Steve back. I'm a very sweaty person and I needed one in a pinch. As usual, I experienced the best service. He helped me select the best make and model for my needs over the phone and had it delivered to my apartment and 4th floor walk-up ASAP. Amazing shopping experience all around. Update #2 - There is really nothing bad about this place. I gave them a call to see if they do professional area rug cleaning - of course they do! I figured it was easier to get it professionally done than to try to: find a machine, lug it up 3 flights of stairs, do the work myself, all while healing from a broken elbow. Instead, I was charged a very reasonable price and the same lovely man that delivered my air conditioner came to do my carpet cleaning! He remembered me and everything! He did an AMAZING job. I have shopped at Brooke's for 25 years now and never had a regrettable experience, spending thousands on everything from air conditioners to an electric can opener. Brothers Steve and Charlie have only been knowledgeable, honest, reputable, and pleasant. They remain an asset to the neighborhood. I remember wanting a vacuum cleaner and asking which model would last forever. Steve explained that no such model exists but Meile's were known for longevity. Had been meaning to write a review of this place a while back but kept forgetting. I cannot recommend this place enough. I always prefer supporting a small local business over the big boxes, and thanks to the people at Brooke's, that is an easy decision to make. Two years ago I was looking to buy a new vacuum for my apartment, and they steered me to a German brand I'd never heard of before, saying it was the best value for my dollar (and actually less than the model I'd originally intended to purchase). It's hands down the best vacuum I've ever owned, and saved me some $. Absolutely top notch support and advice. Last year, bought a new AC - again - they steered me to the best model for my space, and had it delivered and installed with no hassle within 2 hours of purchase. The install guy was awesome, efficient and expert, and the machine has been perfect. The brothers that run this place are great. They know their stuff and are upfront on what they have and don't have or what they can get fixed or not. Got an A/C from them and it was delivered and installed same day. Price was pretty good. I usually come here to replace the cartridges for my Sodastream, and even though they charge $19 for a replacement (it's only $16 at Bed, Bath and Beyond), I still come to them even though they are more expensive. read more

If you need your serger fixed, pls see Po On sewing repairs and services on Centre in Manhattan. They were able to fix my serger/overlock machine on site instead if charging me $200+ to send it out without being able to tell me if it would even be fixed. The ppl at this place were friendly but there are other spots in the city you can go to if you're in a jam with your sewing machines and sergers. read more

When I moved to brooklyn from the pacific northwest and experienced my first New York summer, Brookes Vacuum (which also selling AC, air filters, sewing machines and such) was the place I called to get an air-conditioning unit. They sold me one on the phone and literally delivered it 30 minutes later, and then 30 minutes after that I had 10,000 BTUs blowing through my apartment. I think that is pretty amazing customer service, and it is what made me go back to them when I was in the market for a vacuum. They have an amazing selection of low to high end cleaners, and they will demonstrate to you in the store all the different facets without trying to sell you something you don't need. I bought my Miele there four years ago, and when it had a lose wire last month, they sent their repair man to come pick it up for free! Again, stellar customer service that you would never get at a big box store. read more

I wrote a review last year for Brooke's carpet cleaning service. Well, my dogs have been particularly hard on my rug for the last 9 months, and I couldn't wait to get it cleaned again, because it was in really bad shape.... the same guy came back and did it AGAIN, and it is amazingly clean all over again. He also did it in under an hour. I can't tell you how great it looks, and I was expecting it to take a lot longer!!! If you'd like your rug to look new (mine is at least 20 years old), call Brookes and schedule a carpet cleaning. It's a serious bargain, considering the results! read more

First off, the customer service here is beyond stellar. These guys know their products inside and out and are truly wonderful people. If you need some weird vacuum bag that you can't find anywhere, these guys have them in the option of singles, three packs, and 6 packs. Their A/C service is stupendous: I had one die a few years ago. I called them up and they sent a guy over to install the new one that has been perfect and running under heavy load for three summers now. Couldn't possibly ask for more. Our ac broke and we were about to go to PC Richards until someone told us about this gem of a store. Steve was helpful and knowledgeable. We wound up buying 2 ACs as our other one wasn't strong enough to cool our living room. They delivered them the same day. Prices were competitive but honestly I don't mind paying a little more at local small businesses. Maybe we would have paid less at PC Richards and as much as I like P.C. Richards I would rather do business with the "little" guy. We didn't have them do the install because we are lucky enough to have a super who was able to do it. We also walked out with a new vornado. We had a inexpensive but good stick vacuum repaired. The repairs were about twenty bucks less than the cost of the vacuum, BUT that is because the machine itself was cheap. I am not displeased Brooke's prices. The twins who run the shop are down to earth, personable, and they do good work. I like their selection of small appliances too. I love this place. read more

I have a Dyson vacuum and Dyson themselves could not figure out what the problem was. The gentlemen at Brooke's are so smart and skilled; they were able to detect the problem in the vacuum's computer and fix it rather than replace it! Very quick turn around - only one business day. And they are very communicative; they called me within two hours with a diagnosis of what the problem was, and picked up every one of my calls with updates. We went through a collection of vacuum cleaners in my office, each promising to be the best and longest lasting. I learned in this store that my office (1500 sq.ft) was too much for the standard machine and that I should choose a "real" vacuum designed for my level of use. It wasn't that much more, but since it has lasted 10 years and is still going strong (two or three new belts later), it proved to be money saving advice in the long run and does a better job. I brought my sewing machine in here a few days ago and the guys were great at fixing the machine, super fast and super responsive. I could not have been happier. Today though when I pulled my sewing machine out to start a project, I noticed a neon sticker stuck to the inside of the machine. In principle I imagine it operates similarly to the stickers oil change places stick in a car's windshield. Difference being that the windshield stickers come off and this one doesn't, at least not easily and not without leaving a dirty sticky residue. I called the guy to tell him I wished they had not done this and he said it functions as a sort of receipt and that only 1 in 10,000 people don't like it. Really?! First that's an amazing number, and second, I imagine most probably just don't say anything. If they are so sure people don't mind, why don't they ask them first? And anyway, considering I was handed a receipt when I picked up the machine and that there was receipt type tag attached by a string to the machine's handle, I do not think pasting another, a third, to the machine is necessary. I told him my problem was that it is hard to get off and that now there is dirty stickum stuff on my relatively new 6 month old machine. He suggested I use a hair dryer or bring it in. To me, that seems like a lot of work on my end for an unnecessary problem they created. Luckily this machine is not antique or something I want to resell. I would have been especially upset if this had happened to the sewing machine that used to belong to my grandmother. So, great place, but ask in advance about any neon extras they may want to adhere to your items. read more

I went to Brooke's to get my sewing machine serviced. I had to leave it htere with a $15 deposit while they looked at it. They called me the same day with a quote and it was ready the next business day. Someone even gave me a detailed demonstration on how to thread it properly. I will definitely go there again. We dropped off our vacuum for service which was in good condition, free of excessive scratches and dings and had a rubber flange on the bottom. When we picked up the vacuum we noticed that the hose and beater had many scratches and dings and contained red fibers in the beater. We do not own any red carpets. We told the guy that this is not our beater or hose. They insisted that it was and proceeded to throw us out! No customer service! We are currently disputing the service charge.
